Time for something super dark.
In some interview question, the creator of MHA was asked why that one Nomu singled out Midoriya from the crowd to be picked up and ganked.
He responded by saying that you should check out the kids quirks who were hanging out with Bakugo when he and Midoriya were kids.
The Nomu in question had wings.
One of Bakugo's childhood friend's that he hung with at the same time as Midoriya, also had wings.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Uraraka being all about the cold hard cash really turned me around on her.
You missed all the dumb mole stuff that spread around her because of that.
Everybody is the mole, according to fans. Usually because that one time they expressed a personal desire that wasn't about saving puppies. It has kept happing as more characters are introduced/developed.
One problem with the Eraserhead route is that his power can only trigger if someone answers a question he asks. Once he gets popular, villains would know to shut the hell up as soon as they know he's on the scene.
That's not how it works. All they have to do is say anything and he gets power.
Imagine how hard it is to shut the fuck up as a Shonen villain.
Huh? I am pretty sure they said they have to reply to him for his powers to work
Some ambiguous phrasing. I implied that they needed to say something to answe his question. It actually is that they need to say anything at all in response to him.
He got Deku when he was basically just monologuing insults, and Deku responded with what was basically "shut up!"
Yeah, Deku's response was basically "The fuck did you say" and then BRAIN FREEZE
Yeah but that's still replying to them
I don't think his power would work if, for example, a villain was telling his team mate not to say anything and Shinso was just also in the room
What if he steps on the villains foot really hard?
I really don't like the idea that the phrase "One for All, All for One" is broken down into the heroic One for All and the villainous All for One. The original phrase is about the moral obligations the individual has towards society and the moral obligations society has towards the individual. To associate one part of that duty with villainy, especially the part about society's duty to the individual, strikes me as hyper authoritarian and fucked up.
I'm on episode 46, is this addressed at some point? Maybe in a spin-off?
this show mostly rules but the gross stuff is just gross enough that I'd feel weird recommending it to someone without some qualifiers so that sucks
That's how I feel about nearly all anime now...

Nope. It's just clever puns on their quirk abilities.
And as we all know, puns are the height of humor.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Japan in general and shonen in particular loves puns and references to things. Like everything in DBZ is a food reference because why not.
Also wait, the 10 month training montage took less than one episode? This is shaping up to be a good shonen.
I love that 4 episodes in I feel like I'm already at the chuunin exam equivalent of Naruto, which took like months to get to. I appreciate that this show is getting through the origin tale of the hero right quick.

Oh the pacing is absolutely fantastic and it's because it's a seasonal show instead of a perpetual motion shonen show.

It's the messages we give to children that deserve the most scrutiny.
My duder, it's two English phrases in an anime aimed at JHS students. Most of the viewership isn't even going to know what the phrase means in English outside of the context of the show.
If they decide to look it up on their own time though they might learn something interesting!
I mean you could argue that virtually all the villains in the story are people who feel sidelined by society at large (some with waaay better justifications than others) and you could argue that All For One's whole deal is using that dissatisfaction with society to fuel his desires.
Also One For All being good and All For One being bad gels pretty darn well with 1. superheroes in general and 2. Japan's stance on collectivism vs individualism.

the entire purpose of the names one for all and all for one is to make you sound like a friggin ignoramus when you try and refer to one and accidentally say the other

Deku taking his name from the video game series legend of zelda and becoming the greatest hero is the shows way of saying the best thing you can do is to consume mass media without complaint, fucked up if you consider that

Did All for One pick his nickname after he found out about One for All, or did the brother pick his because All for One was already called that? Only one of them is public knowledge.

MHA is good but not good enough for me to buy a crunchyroll/VRV sub
you can get a free 2-week funimation trial to watch it if you want
i wound up paying for it because it got me with ol auto-renewal trick right when simuldub stopped, but I've been watching iron-blooded orphans too, which we don't need to talk about here, so it's okay
i like how Uraraka taking a week's worth of karate lessons is treated as this huge power up for her.
makes you think about the UA curriculum being maybe not so well thought out

Literally every student should get training on hand to hand combat and be trained to restrain people as safely as possible... but to be fair that might be something taught in second, third, or fourth year.

I'll note that there's an idea of a "non-combat Hero" presented in-universe by way of 13. Heroes in the professional sense are anyone trained in emergency response-- that could also entail fire and disaster recovery, maritime emergency, search and rescue, and so on. Not everyone is out there stopping bullets and fighting powered villains. Indeed, in the era of peace imposed by All Might, fighting villains is probably an obscure pursuit.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Speaking of names and the meanings behind them, perhaps the biggest surprise I had with the series was finding out that “Plus Ultra” is an actual saying created half a millennia ago and not, as I had assumed for a long time, just the author putting together some English words that sounded cool.

I love that All Might is an American named Toshinori Yagi.
Also where do you guys read the manga at? I don't read alot of it and I'm trying to cut down on physical books I own. Is there a service like Marvel Unlimited or Comixology that caters to manga?

Nah but Kindle usually offers them for fairly cheap

So it's superficial? I was expecting more.
It's a good shonen anime but expecting a deep analysis of the cultural meanings and subtext of the pun names of two superheroes is
Not really what it is aiming to do

edit: but I don't think that's intentional
All for One is called that because All for One is a selfish villain who steals others powers for his own gain
One for All is called that because All Might, and Midoriya, are willing to put their lives on the line and do anything to protect innocents
Like, that's it
I feel very attacked right now
Thank you

It's the Batman Effect on a global scale.
Oh no I just realized typing this it's actually the Superman Effect and now I am hanging my head in shame.
it's a shallow shonen that happens to have really good characterizations
this ain't Monster or Berserk dude, enjoy the ride
also most shonen are meant for the 15-25 japanese male crowd, not kids

Like 7-8 bucks per volume
You can use the crunchyroll app without a sub, don't even need an account. I watched it this way on firestick from the first ep.
