I am excited about the prospect of Robocop with a story by the writers who actually wrote the original movie
Verhoeven deserves a lot of credit for his style and daring but Robocop is an incredibly tightly constructed movie and owes a huge amount of its success to its script
anyway, here is a story about when I saw Robocop for my birthday last fall
Oh I have been meaning to share this story but haven't been posting a lot the last couple of days.
Sunday night my friends took me out for my birthday. The Alamo Drafthouse was having a special 30th anniversary screening of Robocop. It was pretty neat; they passed out fanny packs full of candy, a cap gun and caps (to shoot at the screen during gunfights), a couple of noise-making firecrackers (to use when there were explosions), and fake dollar bills (to make it rain every time someone says "I'd buy that for a dollar"). So that was cool.
Before the show, there was a live Q&A from the Dallas screening (where the movie was filmed, standing in for Detroit) with Robocop himself, Dr. Peter Weller. And it was...it was something.
Weller walked in, announced that he last talked about the movie at TIFF or something five years ago and didn't really want to talk about it again but had decided to swing around because he has family in the Dallas area and "they paid me a lot of money." The host, some gormless wonder from the Sci-Fi Channel, nervously chuckled. Then Weller starts talking about all the marathon training he did in Dallas while filming the movie. Trying to steer the conversation, the host asked if he spent any time with the other cast members. "Oh yeah," Weller said, "some of them were great runners."
Finally he allowed himself to be nudged onto the subject of the movie. Here is what he said, as close as I can remember it:
"This movie, man, it's a fuckin'....it's a core sample of the American disease. Runaway, unregulated crony capitalism, and nobody loves capitalism more than me, I love buying shit, so do you, but when it's not controlled, the working man, like in this movie, gets methodically stripped of everything that makes him human in the name of...but oh man, I got to put a bit of that humanity back, a bit of that swagger back, in the warehouse scene. You have no idea how much I loved shooting that automatic 9mm Beretta. Jesus! I grew up in Texas, man, guns and fishing and camping and all that shit are in my DNA. But that was the first time I'd fired a gun in like six years. '81. Trip to Italy. My brother - great man, really smart cat, MENSA, four tours in Vietnam, one of the first 50,000 guys in and one of the last 50,000 guys out, by the end he wasn't even using any American gear, just fuckin' Israeli this and German that - my brother, my late brother, I'm sorry to say, he tells me once, 'Peter, you sold out the values of your people for the pretensions of the piazza.' He wasn't being serious, he was just busting my chops, but the thing is, he was fuckin' right, man, I traded in my gun for a cappuccino and never looked back, man."
Silence. The host stared blankly out at the crowd. "Uh...tweet your questions to hashtag robocopmovie!"

Say, is anyone still listening to "Wonderful!", the one Griffin does with his wife Rachel? I fell off it a few episodes after they switched from Rosebuddies. Not that I was a Bachelor fan, but Wonderful was just too unfocused, I found it difficult to listen to.

How are the more recent episodes? Worth a listen?
I still listen!
Wonderful got more focused for sure and they found a rhythm. My biggest issue is I've found that my musical taste doesnt line up with theirs at all so I end up skipping segments where they talk about songs because I just dont get it. Otherwise it's gotten pretty fun!

my interest in the podcast died super suddenly and i don't know why. i blame it on everyone becoming nice supportive fans of it

Mitch you're too big of a hipster to enjoy things that other people like
there is more truth to this than I wish there was, but thinking about it now, it was the semi-charmed one and the fat lip combo that overall came across as stale comedy/criticism. it felt like a fresh and consistently funny podcast had diverted into the a very typical "podcast says what!?!? to old media!" path. I'm sure it's still good and that's not the new norm or anything--judging by people's talk here and by what I've enjoyed of miel and demi's before that feeling set in--but it just very effectively killed my interest for the time being

Its decent but so much of the writing is poor that it bugs me
You should skip to Season 9, episode 20, the second story
For no reason at all.
Also the quality of the stories get much, much better as the podcast continues and they start to add various production flourishes.
"A new take on the epic fantasy genre... Darkly comic, relatable characters... twisted storyline."
"Readers who prefer tension and romance, Maledictions: The Offering, delivers... As serious YA fiction, I’ll give it five stars out of five. As a novel? Four and a half." - Liz Ellor My new novel: Maledictions: The Offering. Now in Paperback!
The only episode I didn't like was the Semi-Charmed Life one
so you’re saying you want something else to get you through it

I really hope Louie is subtly sowing the seeds here for a future MBMBaM cartoon show
At the very least if they make another season he'll do the inevitable Haunted Doll cartoon segment

Edit: This song is the musical equivalent of what happens when you discover filters in photoshop for the first time.
