How do you use Vanilla forums' search function?

I want to search for a keyword or keyphrase, filtered by poster and thread title. Right now, any results I get seem entirely unrelated to whatever I typed in the box. Is there a syntax? Does it implement Boolean operators or something? Or am I out of luck?

If you do a search, on the search result page you should see a drop down menu on the search bar that you can use to narrow your results beyond "The word you're searching for showed up somewhere around this post".

I completely missed that dropdown. Thanks!

Note: Posts can take a a few weeks to get indexed, and don't necessarily get (successfully) indexed in chronological order. So you might get hits from yesterday, but nothing from two weeks ago, and some from a month ago may not match because they were edited last week.

As an alternative, I've had good luck using google advanced search (just toss site:forums.penny-arcade.com into your query) when vanilla's search wasn't helping me out. Our forums are google-indexed extremely well.
