tyrannus, suppose I take physical delivery of an option. should I record the cost of the underlying contract at the strike price, or at the spot price? should the exercise of the option itself realize the (strike - spot) as P&L?

what was the cost of entering into the option? what was the premium you paid? that should be your cost basis on the option. and yeah generally the exercise/expiration creates a realizable event. the underlying stock's cost basis should be, like, strike price * shares + premium + commission.

let's say the premium and all transaction/broker fees are zero - I bought an ideal option at the market, like a spherical cow. There's just the strike.
IFRS9 is pretty straightforward: record at the strike. The exercise doesn't realize anything - all of the P&L is still unrealized on the underlying.
GAAP seems to suggest things like
