Ok, So I have been delinquent in doing this and I feel kind of bad because generally speaking I like to
    1.) Help folks and
    2.) Feel useful
and this is something I’m usually not a terrible procrastinator about and has definitely helped some folks from here (and folks from other corners of my life) out.

And that is to inform folks and offer guidance on the two career opportunities I know anything about. Teaching and professional firefighting here in NJ.

    For Everyone:

    First and most importantly: Teaching.

My wife works for a charter district operating in Newark, NJ called North Star: http://northstar.uncommonschools.org/ a branch of a wider network called Uncommon Schools.

As employers they offer very competitive to outright superior pay (my wife has been with them seven years and is making more than 20+ year teachers with masters degrees elsewhere), solid health benefits and advancement opportunities. They are also very progressive in hiring and promotional practices for both women and minorities.

The most rigid requirement for a teaching position is a Bachelors Degree in… anything. If you’re a non education major they can alternate route you and help you get your certifications while on the job. Aside from that a hard working attitude, a receptiveness towards feedback and a world outlook geared towards social justice are the three most important personality traits if you would like to explore a career there.

They are hiring right now, to start working right fucking now. They have been taking progressively less TFA hires and had an increased need this year and fell short on recruitment. If you are willing to relocate and are willing to work with me on this you will likely have an interview by next week.

Please PM me or @ me in the thread if you’d like to know more.

For New Jersey residents or those who can relocate like this week- Firefighting.

    https://www.state.nj.us/csc/authorities/faq/safety/firefighters.html#1

The job announcement for civil service was posted back on July 1st and closes this month and I’m a dick head for not saying something sooner.

    Requirements:
    High School Diploma or equivalent
18 years to 35 years of age
    Valid drivers license
Residency established in city of your choosing prior to application submission.

It’s the best job in the world and entry level position pays into the low 6 figures now in many cities. Pension after 25 years of service. @ me in here or PM me for more info.

Part of the reason I've been so busy the last few days is that with the filing group switch, there's just a lot of minor adjustments to be made. To my schedule, etc. My file group is technically 5 people but I basically only get files from two of those attorneys.

I just had to pull a bunch of medical records from my file cabinet and I'll work on filing those sooner than later, because it was getting to the point where they were literally gonna overflow out of my drawer.

It's over, and I've successfully been paid for it, so I feel safe in celebrating this thing:

Last year, work did a survey that covered a bunch of "which one of these things would you like to see added to benefits?" and "would you take Benefit X if it meant we reduced Benefit Y?" stuff. I didn't really expect anything to come from it, and if anything did, I was expecting it to be the reductions without the additions.

Early in July of this year, they announced that they were implementing 4 of the things from that survey; the first of which was Paid Caregiver Leave for the birth or adoption of a child (or caring for a spouse/parent/child with a health condition). The old benefit was "Mothers can take short term disability at 80% of pay, fathers and adopting parents can take unpaid time off, use PTO if you want to be paid."

Which is great, but I had my child last year. Oh well... maybe I'll use it if we have another... except then I see it can be taken within 1 year of the child's birth, not necessarily right after they're born. That's great... but this is sudden, and there's no way I'll be able to get that time off approved now.

But then! My department director sends me and another person on my team that also had a kid an email and says "I know you guys would qualify for this new benefit, let me know when you want to take it and we'll make it work."

Holy poop. Within a few days I went from not expecting anything to being off for 2 weeks to spend with my kid and paid to do it. I was half convinced that when I came back they'd have decided they didn't need me, or that there would be some paperwork flaw that I wouldn't actually get paid, but no... I'm still here, and I did get paid.

So yeah, that was really good. The other benefits they're adding later this year and early next year are Backup Child Care, PTO for part-timers, and expanded Mental Health Resources.

It's just.... nice to have a positive change in benefits once in a while, ya know?

Anyone know how dual citizenship works? Apparently Amex has a building in the UK and it would be kind of cool to work in a different country, I tried to do it at Discover.

The dual citizenship thing comes in because I was born in England while my dad was stationed there because he was in the US Airforce so I'm wondering if that somehow counts?

UK doesn't have birthright citizenship so probably not I'm afraid

You don't need to be a citizen to work in the UK but you do need to have a unique set of skills that will justify them not hiring locally.

I'd assume it would be a lot easier to get a job there from the inside, at least for coach positions and up. I'm gonna ask the trainer about it on Sunday.

I will, I'm hoping it is something that isn't uncommon.

I started thinking about it because they are sending a bunch of coaches to an Amex site in Mexico to train a collections team for the next 4 months and that sounds really cool.

So ive been working graveyard for months now, for reasons.

    Those reasons are gone.

Now ill do 3 days graveyard
    1 day off
    2 days day shift
    1 day off
    Graveyard

Which sounds sucky, until boss pointed out second day shift would end around 1700, and my next shift would start at 2100 2 days later. Which adds up to 52 hours between those shifts

My friend I went to nursing school with has worked a million odd jobs, he was like 42 when we were in school. Anyway he posted this to our group chat in a discussion about jobs.
I quit a job once and walked/hitchhiked 120 miles home. My uncle told me he would pay me 5$ cleaning carpets for him. I worked 12 hour days for 14 days straight. On pay day he gave me a check for 70$ or some shit. Turns out he meant 5 a day. I just started walking home, was like a 3 hour drive. I was 13 I think, never talked to that guy again, guess he had a stroke and died soon after.

Other jobs he's had that have come up in discussion over the years.
Illegal migrant farm hand in Australia
    Police officer in New Zealand
Weed dispensary security for a dispensary owned by two gay porn stars
Concert security, apparently he was with Kurt Kobain at The Mall of America when they got all those medical models for the back side of the In Utero cover.

The guy honestly did earn the suspension and he totally owned up to what he did wrong. It's three shifts he loses, hopefully he'll learn to be more responsible, the manager did tell him that I wasn't informed of why I called to ask him to come in early(obvisouly I did but thanks for that I guess).

But yeah the manager should have just stayed the extra hour until his shift was supposed to start.

We do at least not do any of this type of stuff off the clock, so he will get paid for the time he was here today.

The Walmarts here don't tell you when you are fired. They just wait for you to figure it out when you can't clock in. Why this is done is a mystery to me and my friend who works there, but she says it hasn't always ended well. Once people figure it out they tend to start getting a little worked up.

I've never seen anyone do it, because generally when people mess up they either own it and come out better, or flip out and quit/do something extra bad specifically to get fired because they don't know how unemployment works.

And I've never seen management press on anyone unfairly, because as union workers the moment any disciplinary topic comes up in a conversation with management we can stop the conversation and demand arbitration.

Quoting myself only to say, I didn't have to yell at anyone or be stern or lecture anyone on how to do their job. Which are all complaints that I've received about the night supervisor, that I'll be speaking with management about. Also looks like he had been going to a certain member of management who was recently transferred to another store, outside of work hours, to secure administrative tasks that are are supposed to be worked on by all members of my team and then trying to hide it all from us. He has been using this as justification to tell people that he is the lead after I'm off shift.

I am going to recommend he be remitted to another department and we list his position as open for internal hire.
