I still wanna get Smash but I can’t very well justify why
My kids are a bit too young and the competitive scene is intensely offputting to me
Personally I'm getting it because I think they're fun to play and getting a casual match going in my household isn't too difficult. I kind of treat the Smash games more like party games than fighting games, though - items on high, the most banned of stages (except New Pork City, fuck huge stages)...
Come think of it, I'll probably need to grab another set of joycons.
Man, I've been playing Mega Man X since I was 6, so this is weird to me (like, I totally get it, but on a primal level I don't)
I haven't played X in over a decade and I guarantee I remember where every upgrade is
the only games i owned were mega man 2 on the game boy and mega man 8 for sega saturn
i'd rent the games, but never get far
I rented Mega Man 6 from Pharmore literally every week
My dad tried to get cute and rent a baseball game (Ken Griphey's whatever) one time but it was an SNES game
We had an SNES a month later
ahh nice
yeah the snes was the first console my parents could afford so that's where i started
i missed...all nes ones and the local video store had a huge selection so i'd rent pocky and rocky or chrono trigger instead of the mega man x sequels
I have fond memories of saving up my pennies and renting an SNES + FF6 and powering through as far as I could before having to return it all a day later
I tried putting a note in with the case saying "please don't save over file #3 I'm trying to beat the game" but it was to no avail
Renting JRPGs was always a treat but you tended to get very familiar with the first third of the games

I literally bought Earthbound with the scratch and sniff cards from Best Buy for $10
I was so excited when I traded the cartridge into gamestop for $20
I don’t think I’ve ever beaten a Mega Man boss, much less an entire game.

Simple answer.
Don't play competitive.
The new smash game has settings for both a party game and a competitive game. And smash make it easy for you to make the other play OP as shit if you use the handicap system. You can play with your kids pretty easily!
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
There’s also the everpresent fact that I don’t even play the games I own!

I buy each smash and think yeah I'm going to play this with my friends all the time. And then we get together once a year and play it for about 30 minutes (and play puyo puyo tetris for 3 hours) and between those times I don't want to play and 'get good' and so it goes largely unplayed outside of unlocking characters and I fall for it everytime because those 30 minutes a year are still magical.
But this time I'm going to play it for myself and if I get too good well too bad, come play with me more often meat friends.
The Wily levels in Mega Man 2 have some nonsense in them.

I have beaten megaman 3 and 5 (the two I owned as a kid)
I could never beat 2 when I rented it because of that fucking dragon.
I had no idea what the fuck to do when he appeared.

Apparently you can't do that unless you keep running to the right and get past the falling blocks and his bullshit!
And even then he's only weak to quick boomerang.

I bought Earthbound just before Nintendo took a hatchet to all the sites distributing the roms and it doubled in price
it was a used copy without the guide, but I'll take what I can get

If Smash Ultimate has at least one new 'holy shit' character announcement that's aimed at me then I'll be excited. Although I accept that Smash 4 set a very high bar in that regard, and my favourites all returning is good.
X 1-3 are really good
4 is pretty good
5&6 are ok
7 is a trainwreck
8 is mediocre
They all get a little to hard once you get to the Sigma stages imo. I've only ever finished 1-3.
I just played through the first three and I think 1 is the best
2 has some really good ideas and it has the coolest and most functional arm and armor upgrades, but it's really easy and most of the levels are too short
3 has a terrible arm upgrade, a bunch of extraneous upgrades that you have to go back and forth through the game to collect (and then probably never use), and it's when the level design started to substitute interesting traversal with copypasted enemies
also I feel like they overcorrected on the difficulty
basically 2 and 3 each feel like they needed another six months in the oven
For a few seconds there I thought, ‘hmm yes put Final Fantasy 8 on Switch’, but then I remembered it would probably use comic sans for its main font because Square can’t port old games without fucking them up somehow

The 9 remaster/port was good!
So there's hope, kinda, maybe!
Mostly they just seem hell-bent on fucking up their 2d games really.

could anyone whose played Dead Cells yet tell me how difficult it is? I've been playing almost nothing but hard games for the last few months (Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Hollow Knight, Celeste) and don't know if I want to jump into another one so soon

That's fair!
I'm just saying that the game(s) have a lot of settings that let you customize your experience, and the next game especially so.
Mega Man is too hard but I keep wanting to play them, but not enough to improve myself at them, it’s weird

The crash bomb puzzle boss is pretty much the whole reason I say 3 is better than 2

Along which axis?
-12x +34Y to center
I'm not even playing it because I enjoy it anymore. I'm playing because I want to beat it and then tell it to die.
Yeah, I was hoping the same thing. Ah well, something to enjoy on the train home from work tomorrow, I guess!

I will never, ever say bad things about FF8.
Or say FF3 is good, for that matter.
They even let you customize the controls on the console version!
I went back to bed almost immediately afterward though, because I need sleeeeep.

comes out October 12th, is still 60 goddamn dollars
