Just picked up Night in the Woods at 40% off, I've heard a lot about this game and looking forward to playing through it with my wife. There's not a lot of actual difficult platforming or anything is there? Thinking of leaving the controller in her hands, but if she starts getting frustrated we may not make it through.

    There's hardly any
The only real instance of platforming is to get to some optional conversations, and even then it's pretty simple with no consequences of failure

Finished Wandersong, what a wonderful, emotional journey.

    Ending spoilers
Part of me hoped that The Hero would redeem herself, but alas. I respect the developer for going in that direction - that bit of bitterness makes the sweetness of everything else more enjoyable. The Mountain Bird segment is definitely on of my favourite gaming moments in recent history. And the heart-to-hearts between The Bard and Miriam about why they act the way they do definitely struck a cord.

There's also a cool secret in the credits

    Hint:
Check out around The Bard's house before going to sleep at the end. What you'll see will be relevant for Chapter 1 in the same spot.

    Answer:
Recruit the bird and head to the left, stand still in the middle of the secret area and a constellation will appear. Take a screenshot, then use this key

and sing the password to the cat in Chapter 1 in the same spot.

In conclusion, I give this game 10 dances out of 10.

Hey, about that. Would you mind spoiling me on what actually happens if you do that last thing? I got there, tried my damnedest to follow the instructions, and never got it to work. At this point I don't feel like sitting through the credits for a third time just to take another stab at it and I couldn't find it on YouTube either.

Huh, you shouldn't need to redo the credits, just
get the code, then use scene select to go back to the start of Chapter 1, talk to the cat on the left and sing the code.

I'll PM it to you if you want to know.

Honestly the hardest bit of platforming in NitW is the little part right at the beginning where they teach the triple jump to you.

I do think Castlevania 2 is notable at least for the fact that it tried such a weird thing. Did it succeed? Not at all. But it's neat that they tried.

I think it would be interesting to see how many early nintendo games did this. In my mind, it's a pretty consistent trend. Like, zelda 2, castlevnaia 2, mario 2, they're all really different and not just iterations. Obviously mario 2 is a technicality case since it wasn't meant to be mario, but still.

    hey Castlevania thread

the Netflix Castlevania has made me realize I have never played a Castlevania!

    this is fucked up!

what do I do? I have an NES Classic and SNES Classic (as well as the access that that implies), PS4 and Switch

symphony of the night is the touchstone, but since the rondo of blood release is out, I'd say to try that one out. SoTN is a direct sequel to rondo, and people for a long time couldn't even really play it. it's not necessary by any means to understand symphony, but it gives context to the famous opening scene.

Mario 2 is just Super Mario Bros, but with a few additional twists, a natural evolution of the first. Doki Doki Panic isn't the sequel to Super Mario Bros.

Final Fantasy 2 fits the bill though.

oh my god, the detail of how ken's moves are different are just as hilariously minute as the original smash direct. "As you can see, his haduken looks different as well (looks exactly the same except has a ghost image of his hands in the fireball)

I’m not gonna go into full details because it’s huge tangled web, but there’s a seemingly credible leak out there for the rest of the Smash Ultimate roster
Geno (Mario RPG), Isaac (Golden Sun), Banjo & Kazooie, Mach Rider, and Chorus Kids (Rhythm Heaven), with Ken (Street Fighter) and Shadow (Sonic) echo fighters

It involves leaks from a Namco employee who has been confirmed is actually a person and not some made-up shit, but it remains to be seen where this goes

I’m skeptical because this is literally all fan wish fulfilment characters, but...they DID already do Ridley and King K Rool...

i hope you've learned your fucking lesson
