Every bit of performance I've seen from him, it had a completely dead audience.
I think the better question is why people keep inviting him.
It just sort of feeds on itself at this point, people keep seeing him in stuff so they think he's popular, like comedian Kevin Hart
Waiiiit a minute... are you Katt Williams?!
Also, both Kevin Hart and DJ Khaled are hugely popular. Not so much a fan of Khaled, afaik, other people actually sing his songs while he just screams his name. Kevin Hart is a funny guy, though. I like him.
Khaled does post some funny stuff on his instagram account, though. Like when he's annoying his wife.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
First heard of him when he chose the tracks for the NBA 2k game a few years back. Got so sick of hearing him scream his name in that stupid annoying screech.
He did a couple of interviews for the game too. The guy came across as a giant poser.
"Mainstream" is a spectrum. It's sad to chase that mainstream recognition in the same way that it's sad (and self-defeating) to try too hard to be one of the "cool kids" when you were in high school, but it's a very human urge.
Blizzard's long courted the mainstream. Remember the WoW TV commercials as it became a pop culture moment?
There's definite commercial value to doing so for them especially with Overwatch and how hard they're pushing eSports. But there's also the matter that the Blizzard folks are people and often like popular music. He's hardly the first musical act they've booked for an event.
... look no further than the headline musical acts at blizzcon over the years ...
I dunno, Foo Fighters and Ozzy really didn't need to court anyone, did they? That said, it was the first time I was able to see Metallica live so I don't feel dirty about them shilling a little.
One of the best columns in a while. The reason good things get mainstreamized in a way that breaks their goodness is because they are built by passionate people whose motivation is quality, but then co-opted by greedheads whose motivation is greed. It's the same problem we have in politics. I mean, the House of Representatives is basically 435 DJ Khaleds.

After reading about it, by all accounts his show was legitimately bad even if you enjoy some pop now and again.
It also makes this comic feel more like one of those political cartoons where there's no image gag, just a bunch of text making an obvious statement.

I thought this was a comic about the new GTA Online After Hours update, in which players can purchase a club and hire DJs and stuff.
He was the musical guest for the Overwatch finals, it was an odd choice.

that said, I feel like there's a meta-joke to be made here about making fun of DJ Khaled in 2018
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat

The preferred nomenclature is "greedos".
