So my friends have expressed some interest in Elder Scrolls Online, and I know at least a few people play that around here (*cough* Pixie *cough*) so I figure I might as well ask here.
Some MMOs have optional subscriptions but heavily gimp you (slower experience, lower inventory capacity, and other things to make gameplay more tedious) to encourage subscribing. Where does ESO sit on that scale if you just pick up the base/Morrowind package? Does the game have a lot of grind or "collect 10 bear pelts" boredom? If I'm not interested in raids and it's just going to be a couple friends and I grouping throughout, is the story alright? Can we ignore other players in the game world much or will we have to deal with fighting a quest boss and having 10 randos bunnyhopping around at the same time?

ESO is one of the friendlier non-subscription MMOs I've seen, largely because it does require an initial purchase.
The keyest benefit that a sub gets you is the Crafting Bag, which is an infinite-space inventory screen that holds any and all crafting materials you pick up, rather than them taking up space in your normal inventory. Otherwise, subbing gets you a small bonus on XP and gold (IIRC), and free access to all of the expansion areas. Subscribing also gives you some store currency, which can be used to to purchase, e.g., crafting motifs, houses, and other stuff.
The gameplay itself tends away from "Collect 10 bear asses," though those quests do exist. Major dungeons are instanced.
Moreover, the game "recently" released an update that basically, uh, flattens stats across levels. Your level is now more of a measure of your flexibility - the number of different abilities you can know and use at one time - rather than your raw power. Accordingly, you can walk to pretty much any zone in the game and start adventuring there.

Mostly what Elvenshae said covers it.
Subbing gives you some quality of life improvements (the aforementioned infinite bag of holding for crafting ingredients, primarily), a 10% XP and gold-find boost, and free access to all the DLCs (but not expansions). Not subbing is not going to gimp you or limit you in any significant way.
Bear ass quests are few and far between. The story is solid. Sometimes generic, sometimes amazing. Sometimes, tough choices have to be made.
I ignore everyone, always. I'm the most antisocial MMO player ever. This hasn't hurt me at all. I just solo everywhere. There are times that other players will be bunnyhopping all around at the same time. They can't really hurt anything, though, and I find that they eventually go away.
There is a metric shitload of content to wade through even without any DLC access, too.

@Elvenshae covered the basics of subscribing already. I've generally picked up DLC by waiting for the game's funbucks to go on sale and then using said funbucks to buy the DLC piecemeal instead of subscribing though I also initially bought the pack that included the first 4 DLC.
Quests use a lot of instancing so you generally don't deal with other players for those. Writing is strong for an MMO and stands up even compared to many single player RPGs. It's not Witcher level but leagues better than most of the mainline Elder Scrolls writing. Only thing is that the writers are very keyed in to Tamriel being a really shitty place to live even during peacetime to say nothing of during a civil war so, uh, don't get too attached to most NPCs you meet.
World bosses are shared somewhat obviously and there are non-instanced dungeon like areas too but those tend to be unrelated to the main story quests in a zone.
It's worth checking out. I've burned out on it but that's after sinking in a few thousand hours into the game.
I was playing The Surge last night and thought I had the basic flow of the game down. I was grinding in the beginning area, building up my lackluster beginning armorset and throwing tons of the in-game money into upgrading myself so I can have more implants (items that go in your implants slots that give you new abilities or passive/active bonuses). I find a little out of the way area and hiding within is a dude who kinda looks like he's wearing a beefy but streamlined version of normal astronaut gear. He sees me, runs out, and proceeds to take a shit right on my head. I'm panic-jabbing on the heal button while he just annihilates me at lightning speed. I respawn.
So now that I know where he is and what he is capable of, I go back and kite him into an area with a little more maneuvering room for myself. I play a little hard to get, dodging around more and landing a few shots with my weapon. He is unfased and proceeds to absolutely shit on my head again. This time he not only kicks my ass, but he takes my lunch money. I respawn again. Christmas is ruined.
I look the fight up and find out it's an optional pesudo-miniboss that is included with the free DLC that comes with the PC version of the game on Steam, so I avoid him for a while and start working on the rest of the area. Around 30 minutes later I come back with a some beefier armor and a set of dual machine claws, plus a bunch of implants that I have set up to make the fight easier (I look like what would happen if Wolverine fucked the power loader from Aliens). Long story short I rekt the guy.
With my newfound bravado I head to the first boss area. I wish I could tell you guys that I did well, that I at least put up a good fight, but the reality of the situation was that a giant robot kicked me in the face and I died. It was getting pretty late so I decided to call it quits for the night, and I will try again today.
Anyway, The Surge is pretty fun.
How have I never heard of this game? It came out like a year+ ago, it seems?

Interesting, thanks.
I missed that bundle. I have so many games at this point that if I just keep adding to my library I'll never play anything.
Is The Surge worth $50? Keeping in mind: I love Dark Souls. And I love Sci-Fi. And I love getting shit on the head by hard optional bosses.

You could always try and win it on Steamgifts, plenty of giveaways show up immediately after Humble Monthly. You might have better luck than my -4, at least.

Whoa, I should check my messages more often! Two people have gifted the game to me. Thank you @Mugsley! I redeemed yours! I'll give the other person a public thanks too if they are OK with that (waiting to hear back).
Speaking of which, thanks @Karoz for a copy of The Surge as well. I'll make sure to give it a spin once things calm down from being WoW raid launch week.
Ummmmm...The Surge is awesome! I feel like I blinked and 2 hours are gone. The comparisons to Dark Souls is very apt because that's exactly what it is - from the way shortcuts work and general areas/etc. It's like Dark Souls meets Dead Space meets System Shock 2.

I've only played a demo for The Surge, but my favorite part is how you can aim at parts you want to harvest from most humanoid enemies, and the higher cut and whatever their luck-style thing is, the greater chance you get of harvesting that part. It feels good to do that kind of thing, to get what they had and use it as your own.

I forgot how fun the game is when you're terrified and struggling to survive. Thankfully, my time at level 1 has left me clued to where all the construction supplies are.
I have a plan, but can i avoid hordes long enough to survive.
Shadows: Awakening is pretty good, guys. It's a remaster and continuation of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms, which is itself a sequel to Kult: Heretic Kingdoms from like 2004.
It's an ARPG. You play a demon, and devour the souls of others to basically switch characters on the fly. You have to switch back and forth between the physical and spirit worlds throughout in order to progress, too. Like there might be a chasm you can't physically cross, but in the spirit world you can, so you switch to demon form, float over, switch back to one of your possessed human forms... There's things in both worlds that can't be interacted with if you're not in the right form. All in all, it's pretty slick and clever and fun.
Graphics are pretty, gameplay is solid, voice acting is really good.

If you're talking about the
funky spaceman
after you reactivate your power core in the very beginning of the game you can
go back out of ops toward where you first started the game, go down the tube on the right, and make a right at the end, there's a hidden little spot where another spaceman spawns. That one and the one near the giant smelter robot both respawn whenever you use the medbay, and you can farm a set of their gear from them as well. It requires like 35 power just to wear on its own, so it'll be a while before you can use the whole set, but it's pretty sweet looking.
Also you can drop songs in .flac or .wav or .ogg format into [username]/documents/The Surge/songs and they will play in the medbay.
