Hey, where'd the 90s Captain Marvel site go? Fortunately peeked at it on my phone days ago, but I wanted to see it on a big screen.

It's been replaced with a boring modern marketing page, likely after the network admins threatened to set themselves on fire by sitting too close to the poor overworked server.

It's back, just checked on mobile and desktop.

    edited February 2019
I finally picked up the Infinity War artbook.
    K9ctUyx.jpg

It's really great, some amazingly powerful art in it. It sadly gives Scarlet Witch, Vision, and the Guardians the short end of the stick, but there's great concepts and lots of variations on looks for Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Spidey, etc.

What surprises is me is that it massively fleshes out the Black Order, all four of them have a ton of focus, way more than the film gave them. They're not even named aside from 'The Maw'.

So Battle Angel Alita had all the superhero trailers on before it. Captain Marvel looks fine. The trailer didn't suck me in, but the only Marvel trailers that have really got me going are the non-AoU Avengers ones, so I'm not super worried.

Dark Phoenix on the other hand... no. Just no. That looked so bad that I wouldn't even be interested in seeing the porn parody just because of the negative associations.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

I was meh on CM at first, but realizing that it's going all in on a Kree/Skrull war definitely has my interest, and it looks like it's full space opera too.

I'm obligated to see Dark Phoenix because the X-Men are my favorite property, and I liked some part of most of the films, so I may as well see it through.

It's a sign of Marvel's reputation at the moment. As long as the trailer isn't an obvious hot mess of stupid I'm going to figure that at the very least whatever they put out will be a fun movie.

I liked First Class and DoFP, but Apocalypse was just awful and Sophie Turner hasn't impressed me at all, so having the movie revolve around her is not gonna get my butt in a seat.

I didn't think Apocalypse was awful, but it sure turned south fast. The first third was interesting with Apocalypse gathering his crew.

If only they hadn't picked the least physically imposing actor imaginable to play him.

Oscar Isaac is the least physically imposing actor imaginable? Even if that were true that doesn't matter in this day and age. If Peter Jackson can shoot six movies with normal height actors made to look roughly half their size surely X-Men could pull it off. Given all the makeup and CGI it doesn't seem like a role that NEEDS a hulking person if he has the acting range otherwise.

They sure didn't try. He's a good actor, but half the cast towered over him. Apocalypse should be a monster. Like, Dwayne Johnson or someone should have played him(appearance wise).

My point is that the problem probably isn't Oscar Isaac who is a phenomenal actor and can be pretty imposing regardless of stature (see Ex Machina). This is like saying Natalie Portman was the problem with Padme or Michael B. Jordan with Fantastic Four. Especially in a movie where the character could just be 90% CGI/Makeup, Oscar Isaac was not the problem with the character.

Finally watched Civil War. That is a good movie.

Now to blow through Strange/Homecoming/BP before shit gets real again.

I’d like to get caught up to go see CM in the theater. And maybe it’ll be something that would appeal to my girls. Right now, I think all the ads on Disney are kinda bouncing off them.

Apocalypse was fine; he’s suitably grandiose and menacing. Almost every other actor in the film was pretty bad though

Yeah season 3 of Jessica Jones finished production and is still gonna air but still that sucks. I mean, I guess there's no way to keep making the shows when Disney is getting all "NOPE WE'RE DOING OUR OWN SUBSCRIBER CHANNEL NOW." That's supposed to launch next year I think.

Marvel TV dude statement says that Netflix ended the deal, and strongly hints that they will continue to tell these stories in the future. I highly doubt it is all Netflix here though.

I forget where I read this, but it sounds like this may have just been a dispute over money, in the face of more and more of Netflix's original content becoming successful.

Basically, these MCU shows, while successful, didn't make Netflix as much money as their original content. Netflix wanted to shorten seasons to like 8 episodes, which would reduce the financial burden on themselves. However, less episodes means less overall views, which would reduce the money Disney would get from the project, so they wanted things to stay at 13.

Neither side wanted to foot the bill, as it were, so they're just finishing up what they started.

I'd read an article that pointed out how the incentives for both sides had changed since the deal was inked. In the beginning Netflix was attempting to bootstrap their way into content creation, get folks to watch first run streaming series like real shows and wanted access to Marvel's movie catalog. Marvel wanted to get into serialized content, didn't have the backing of the Mouse at the the start and wasn't the uber dominate movie market thing it was now.

Right now Netflix would rather spend the cash on cheaper shows where it owns the IP and Marvel isn't going to wrap up their movie content on any service that isn't Disney+. There is other stuff about viewership numbers but the fundamentals of the deal have shifted too much for either side to really care about continuing it. I would have liked to see a bit more effort to smooth the transition from Marvel's side but they probably don't have much to offer Netflix with the whole Disney+ thing coming along. Well, aside from stacks of money but that's a tough pitch to the C levels when the money is going into the entrenched competitor of their new start up division.

I like how the conversation's never about what would make the show better. Because making it 8, or hell, even 6 episodes would improve pretty much all the shows sans Daredevil.

I think this applies to almost all shows and I'm glad it's being embraced. I would kill for a recut version of Battlestar Galactica's later seasons to get rid of the garbage. That was back in the "every show is 24 episodes a season!" era

I will never understand why they cast Christopher Eccleston and then drowned him in makeup AND made him speak space-elvish for the runtime of the film.

The X-Men movies love doing copouts instead of doing anything interesting or difficult. Show the classic giant sentinels? Nah, indistinct battle sounds in the dark and then a head falls into view. Colossus and Juggernaut in the same film? Throw Wolverine in there for a non-fight. Bring up Phoenix? Just a mental disorder that basically turns Jean Grey into a non-character.
