I've bought so many Switch games, and I want to buy so many more Switch games, but I can't seem to stop playing Enter the Gungeon. I think I need help.
Got a Switch for the ole birthday and am exploring game options. Probably mostly as handheld.
When I used my DS for the commutes more frequently I trended towards long strategy or turn based rpg games that I'd invariably burn out on before completing them.
SMT4, various Fire Emblems, Persona Q. I pretty certain I'm going to buy Disgaea 5 complete, so I'm keeping true to form on the Switch.
I may buy Banner Saga Trilogy instead though. I've been meaning to replay 1&2 prior to playing through 3 and just don't see the game time opening up while at home, so the commute may be a good place for it.
@akajaybay From what I've heard, Into the Breach will really satisfy your need for turn-based strategy. It's playable in shorter bursts or longer sessions and would probably be perfect for a commute.
I enjoyed Mario + Rabbids a lot (and I'm someone who loathes the rabbids, so... they aren't an impediment to the enjoyment here). It's Mario XCOM, with RPG elements and a lot of careful turn-planning, so maybe you'd dig that. I also gave up on it about 3/4 through because I'd had my fill, so maybe it'd allow you to continue the tradition of burning out.
You can give the Valkyria Chronicles 4 demo a try for free - it didn't click with me the way I hoped it would, but it might grab you, and progress there will carry over to the main game.
Octopath Traveler is the big-huge many-hour turn-based RPG that's dominating Switch headlines right now. It's gorgeous and the combat system is terrific and deep and fun and engaging. I would definitely look into that. I think there's a demo that carries progress into the retail game, but I'm not sure if you can still access that demo. In any event, watch a YouTube video and you'll know within five seconds if it's for you. (Also, I'm sorry if I sound patronizing. You clearly know your RPGs. Just trying to be thorough.)
I played Banner Saga 1 on PC and really enjoyed the storytelling, the art style, and the combat, but I haven't picked up the sequels. Not sure that I will. I sorta felt like I "got it" by the end and didn't necessarily need more of that. It has a very specific aesthetic and mood that I soaked up during my playthrough but was okay with getting away from at the end, because it's bleak and the art (though beautiful) has a... sharpness to it.
I'm doubtful. It feels like a bunch of rumormongers reporting on each other's rumors. I'll believe there's gonna be a Direct once Nintendo announces there's gonna be a Direct and not before.
Oh boo I thought if you owned it either way you would get the discount
Boo indeed! For some reason I'm under the impression the Japanese release of VC4 on Switch actually includes VC1.
Then again, I did get VC1 in a Humble Bundle at some point, and it's been sitting in my steam library unplayed for years. So I guess I could always do that...
But I don't wanna.
It was actually 500 yen off VC1 if you bought both games.

It took a little bit, but it’s getting the hooks in deep. FTL’s Oregon Trail event hooks being absent is a bummer, but the gameplay, setting, and music are more than making up for it.
My current run of Into The Breach isn't going well. I booted the game up, started up a map on the third island, saw the enemies move into an impossible configuration on the first turn, and had to put the game down.

Impossible as in you're going to get hurt or impossible as in insta-lose? Taking a point or two off grid damage early isn't a big deal.

Gonna take damage. I have multiple enemies readying attacks, and there's a Psionic unit giving them all death-explosions they managed to wander into a freeze mine, making killing it a two-step process. Yeah, I should try and get rid of that mentality of every turn needing to be perfect.
I started last night and can't finish the first island. Maybe I should try easy for a bit.
I recommend it. I played my first couple games on standard, but it didn’t click until I’d managed a complete run on easy. Probably step back up to standard again now that I’ve got a better handle on things, but maybe not, because this is really fun.

Perfect is ideal, bit your general plan for damage should be no damage>take mech damage>take grid damage>lose an objective until the grid gets low.
Protecting the train is basically impossible. First turn usually multiple baddies web the train in such a way that it is impossible to clear the web and the tracks. I avoid those missions wherever i can now.
What are the rules on the train taking damage when it runs over a Vek?
It stops and you lose one objective star.
Protecting the train is quite doable except with certain teams, though an explosive psion will make it annoying. Pushing enemies removes their webs, so buildings or trains getting webbed is no big deal.
The big thing to remember is you don't have to kill the Vek.
+1

Also worth noting that if you have a weapon which allows you to freeze things, you can freeze the train at no penalty.
So Dead Cells is pretty nifty. Though I have no idea how to tell which weapons are better than which. I see some new stuff, but they have less DPS than the beginning bow by a considerable margin. What should I look out for?

I'm using the Zenith Guard, so I've got the mech that shoots a diminishing-power laser across the map, a bot that can ram into a target anywhere in a straight line, causing damage to itself in the process, and the defensive mech that can fly and fire a shot that pulls enemies towards it.
The laser mech has a pilot whose passive ability gives her mech a first-turn movement buff, so that one can go pretty much anywhere on this first turn. Its secondary gadget is a one-use heal pack for other mechs. The laser has been upgraded to make it do no damage to other allied mechs.
The defense mech is, as you can see, equipped with a smoke generator instead of the default barrier projector; it creates smoke clouds in a cross pattern around itself, preventing attacks from targets in the smoke. I wish I had the barrier projector, as I could just pop it onto the threatened cities and let the barrier take the expected hit this turn instead. This mech's pilot can move, shoot, and then move again.
The ramming mech has extra health (5 HP instaed of the default 3), and a secondary weapon that allows it to jump in a straight line, pushing away adjacent targets when it lands.
The problem is that rock-maker Vek in the northeastern part of the map. It's the only one directly threatening a building, but for the life of me I can't see a way to prevent the damage. One option would've been to use a laser to destroy the rocks, then have the defense mech either pull it northeast or drop a smoke cloud on it. But the defense mech is too far away to reach that one with its gadgets. I could get around below it, bu the best I could do is pull it in front of a different building. I could kill it with a combination of a laser and shoving one of its rocks into it, but that would trigger a death explosion due to that ice-encased Psionic. That purple Beetle is an elite one that has 5 health.
...wait a second. I think I found a solution while typing out the situation. Hear me out: I move the charge mech below the elite beetle and ram it, pushing it into the ice-encased boulder. That does 3 damage to the beetle and 1 to the mech, and breaks the boulder out of the ice. Then I move the laser mech below the charge mech, and fire a laser into the charge mech (0), the beetle (2), the rocks, and the boulder vek. That'll kill the beetle and break the boulders. The beetle will explode, dealing damage to the lesser beetle and breaking the psionic out of the ice. And then, there will be a clear path for the defense mech to fly to the space where the ice-encased boulder used to be, and drop the smoke cloud, cancelling the action of the boulder Vek. I think that will actually work. Yeah, the charge mech will take 2 damage, but I'll kill an elite and prevent any damage to the buildings, and get one step closer to killing that horrible psionic Vek.
Complaining on the internet always works.
edit: Yep! That worked! And the battle went on to be a flawless victory; no building damage and all the pilots survived.
Normally not a superfan of leaks, but since Nintendo did this I think it's fair game: Yoshi 2019's title may have been leaked (Mind the YouTube thumbnail):
