Reminder: Halloween Horror is coming to the Switch this week

The Yomawari Collection released today for the switch, containing both games that originally released on PC/Vita. They're survival horror games featuring primarily monsters from Japanese mythology, and you have to use stealth and trickery to survive and bypass the various horrors found at night. Don't let the adorable anime girls die horribly!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiPSsJSVWuM

The localization for Death Mark quietly releases tomorrow, which is Experience's first foray into the horror genre. (they're typically known for their Wizardry clones)

It's done in a mix of visual novel and point-and-click style gameplay. You and a host of characters find yourselves marked for death(hence Death Mark hur hur), and the gameplay is basically picking a partner and searching for clues in various environments to find a way to remove the mark while avoiding the supernatural horrors that seek to kill you dead. Who you pick when you go where and what you find and use will determine how well you deal with the horrors that pursue you. My understanding is that there are multiple ways to deal with them, but the repercussions of how you choose to aren't immediate.

    However, there's like...six DS models?

Which DS is the best DS to get?

EDIT: what kind of port charges these things since it doesn't come with a charger?

    Do you mean 3DS line?

2DS for comfort/cheapness (albeit not so pocketable)

Used old 3DS can be nearly as cheap, but the 3D is basically crap. Go with a New if you really want to use 3D.

New 3DS/XL if you want the top quality unit. They are cheap enough on Amazon (SNES edition) that it makes 2DS XL kind of pointless unless you really want something a little lighter and don't mind using headphones most of the time.

Only the New 3DSes lack chargers. Its a propriety charger but its shared across all 2/3DSes and even the DSis. They should cost around $10.

Thanks, fam. Appreciate you for helping me out when everyone else keeps arguing over smash brothers.

You can also get a USB -> DS(etc) cable which works with generic USB chargers. It doesn't look like it's much cheaper that way, but it saves an outlet if you already have a USB charger somewhere / want to keep things lighter when travelling.

I got those for PAX, so I could charge using my battery pack.

Anyways, forty minutes of Smash Brothers? That's... a lot.

I expect at least two new fighter announcements.

I hope one of them's Elma.

For as long as I can remember, Directs have always been either in the afternoon or at midnight for us Europeans. I don't think we've ever had one early in the morning or in the middle of the night.

I thought Bubsy was kind of an up-in-the-air lost franchise. Random people have been playing with it for years, ignoring copyright or trademark, like the game Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Retrospective.

This is all true. I don't think you can get a new 3DS (non-XL) at all anymore, since they were only available in the refurb shop and they seem to be gone. Which is a pity because it's absolutely my favorite model.

Side note, Nintendo refurbs are top-notch quality. I have several friends who have them and have never seen anything other than like-new quality.

Nintendo wants to be the Steam of consoles I think. You could just release a thing that's just the word "Game" on your screen, possibly flashing different colors, and Nintendo would happily toss it onto the new release pile.

Fortnite is probably the most well-known free game on the platform, so that doesn't surprise me. Hell, I have it downloaded just because it's free and why not, and I haven't even launched it!

Fortnite is just a behemoth. It's probably the most downloaded app on whatever platform it's available. Maybe not PC, I dunno. I did end up transferring my account to my PS4 last night though. The game seems to have some technical hiccups on Switch. Long texture load times and stuff. It's playable, but just a lot more smoother on PS4 for me. Also my Switch is wi fi only since my ethernet dongle just decided to stop working.

But since Sony isn't being huge buttholes about it anymore, I can play on either console and share progress :^:

I downloaded it and played a few games the day I did. Havent touched it since.

That it is free is helping inflate that number. I imagine the amount of folks paying for something is waaaaaay less than that.

Yeah, the number of people who downloaded your free app is basically a bullshit number. Daily/monthly active users would be a better metric. I'm not saying Fortnite isn't successful, as it's clearly making Epic a ton of money.

It's just a pretty solid, and exciting MP shooter experience. It only took me so long to come around on Fortnite, because I was under the impression that being a turbo construction wizard was a lot more vital than it actually is. You certainly gain some advantages, but I'm doing just fine ignoring the building aspect, or only plopping down emergency walls for cover.

I think it's just kinda like Warframe. A really well made f2p game that you don't mind tossing some money at if there's something you want. The battle pass is a pretty good deal at $10, but they could be a bit better with pricing on direct purchase skins. Some of them can cost up to $25 which is a bit crazy.

I have avoided Fortnite because i know if i try it and have any amount of fun it's going to stick it's nebulous tentacles into my wallet and soak up funds that would be better spent on other games as opposed to bright pink carebear costumes.

Having tried Fortnite, I recognize that the battle royal genre is totally a thing, but Fortnite specifically does not really grab me at all. But I am now fearful for the right IP to hook me.

See I have absolutely zero fun thinking of the odds of me vs. 100 people, I hate competitive FPS without a team backing me up. In any 1v1 shootout I have a 20% chance of winning at best. There are always people who have put in 10x as many hours as you and will just stomp you every time. There is no way I could ever win a legit match, and if I did it'd be due to being good at hiding and not revealing my position until I'm in the final 10 and get lucky. That's why I only enjoy the 50v50.

Warframe though? From what I've read it's co-op, isn't it? More like playing a quick Diablo map with some friends. Could be wrong though. But I have a lot more interest in co-op experiences with long term upgrades and such.

It is co-op, and it is my great sadness that the large majority of people playing multiplayer games seem to substantially prefer competitive versus co-op games.

My comparison is that both Warframe and Fortnite are completely playable without spending any money, and they don't really have anything that makes you feel like you need to spend money to have a good time (IMO). Since they're so enjoyable, I feel like people don't have a problem tossing out money for battlepasses or other microtransactions from time to time and that's why they rake in so much of that cashish.

Battle Royale in general is something I would think I would hate, but it's been some of the most exciting MP deathmatches I've played in a long time. I definitely play sneaky, and roam the outskirts of places. I only engage enemies I know I have the drop on, unless I absolutely have to charge into a fight. Winning is great, but I just set a personal goal to make it to the top ten and I'm happy. I frequently pull that off and average between 4 and 6 kills a game which is good enough for me.

That's actually the sign of a really good free to play game experience.

"I don't need any of this stuff and the game is 100% playable without any of it and i am having a shit ton of fun hey what's wrong with throwing down a little cash now and then."

In such free to play game's with cash shops you want to foster people spending money because they're having fun not because you're making it so that the game is unfun unless you throw down the cash."

    It's very much worth $4.

Edit: sorry was thinking of the PC version's current sale, yeah $15 is probably a bit much for the Switch. $12 is still on the high side, but it's a solid "Where's Waldo?" clone.

There have been a few games where I was like "y'know what? I've enjoyed this enough that I could plop down $20 and pretend it was a $20 game in the first place." Fallout Shelter was one.

EDIT: Whoa Hidden Folks is on the Switch? That's cool! I have it on Steam. It seems a little overpriced on Switch, but at least it's on sale now. But it is a cool game, probably good for kids. It's like a Where's Waldo with more interactive stuff and minor puzzles.

I have Hidden Folks for phone, and it's a pretty great game there, though a bigger screen would be nice at times. It's not necessarily just-for-kids, some of the things you have to find take a _lot_ of persistence.
