I love that the 10 year Bombcast has like a complete start-to-end tale of Jeff's dirtbag house as a throughline.

I would rather live in the woods than Jeffs dirtbag house what a wide awake nightmare

It's still very odd that a probably-approaching-30 Jeff Gerstmann lived with three college women that they met via...they were the waitresses at a pizza buffet him and Ryan would go to?

That's like three layers of "situations I don't know how one navigates"

Living with two sophomore sorority sisters was the straw that broke my back on moving out of my church housing, which was cheap, on campus, and huge. I was a 2L when I moved out.

Remember, one of my exhousemates wanted to literally murder me and was certifiably insane.

    The sorority sisters were worse.

It all came about essentially on an impulse too right? Like he overheard them saying "I guess we have to go look for new roommates again" during a pizza binge and then against his instinct he blurted out "I'm looking for some space" and it just all happened.
And then every time a college girl left they moved in a dirtbag instead.

I am a bit confused on timelines, but I think Jeff also had subrenters after he bought his current place? Which also turned into a nightmare? But then eventually he was never home anymore so it was more or less free money as long as you keep a door locked in your house?

Yeah I remember him talking about a renter/roomate destroying a bathroom.

Also vague memories of a story about an old mattress outside the house.

Yeah that's what I'm saying, now that a giant corporation has created an awards show to enshrine "industry standards" podcasts have fully crossed the threshold into being part of the commercial media conglomerate. Like they basically were already but this enshrined it in a way I utterly hate

I mean, even the term 'podcast' was an act of commercial branding by Apple, so yeah there wasn't really a time where they weren't part of the greater media machine, but it does feel especially gross in this case, since they are definitely attempting to define the types of podcasts that are 'good', which will undoubtedly inform the opinions of a large number of people who haven't really been exposed to the medium yet.

it still kinda blows my mind how big podcasts have gotten in the last few years, because I usually think of this decade as being the one where streaming video took off in a huge way, but then I think about it for a second and streamed audio's gotten just as huge

like, podcasts are a decade-plus old streaming format in the same way video streaming is, but it seems like they've grown together

I guess I just did a lot more streamed audio in the mid/late-00s because it was easier with the tech I had available to me at the time? so I've been used to podcasts for longer

Podcasts are a very good thing to do while you're doing another thing.

My absolute favourite bit of the Jeff's house saga is

Ryan : "Didn't you guys break a bunch of doors?"
    Jeff: "... .... I don't know what you're talking about."

Jeff stealing doors from other abandoned houses to replace the doors he already broke is an incredible mental picture.

Behind the Bastards has been a very good modern history podcast but it balances out the harrowing nature of Humanity's Worst People In All Of History with jokes! A lot of jokes!!!

(It's been one of my usual work podcasts lately, which I'm trying to balance out with catching up on the Adventure Zone to be less depressing, and also several Canadaland podcasts which....I might start paying Patreon money for, they've got some good journalists on their payroll doing long-form investigations that I can't find at any similar news outlets here)

i actually started listening to behind the bastards a bit ago too! I believe after you posted about it. it's good! Robert Evans has a pretty appropriate handle on its tone and humor, even if I feel like the vast majority of his guests are...... well, they often sound like they're doing a dollop impression, which is just slightly less interminable for me than the actual thing. But I really like Robert.

their episodes during unite the right 2.0 were pretty good too; makes it feel more present-tense than just "more jokes about contemporary politics from random comedians"
