My main goal with dual wield is that I think it looks cooler and honestly in an RPG looking cool is the main reason to make just about any character building decision as far as I'm concerned.
Step 1 is to pick the coolest looking party and the coolest builds.
Step 2 is then to make that specific set-up as strong as you can.

Octagonia
Arachtagon fight was rough, but I got through it. One thing I've never liked about DQ is that Multiheal comes fairly late, way after bosses with powerful hit-all abilities appear. Most of the party go KO'd, for a while it was just the Hero whittling away while Rab healed. When he went down I learned that the benched members take over if the active party gets wiped, which in this case was just Erik, but he clutched it out and managed to finish off the boss in about three or four attacks.
I don't know how I'm gonna fit Erik back on my team. I liked him when he was on the team. I dropped him to try out Sylvando when I got him. And now I've got Jade in that slot.
Right now I'm running MC as a "tank" with a sword and board. I've got Jade for physical DPS, Veronica for magic and also she has great debuffs, and Serena for healing and buffs and cures. And that's working really well for me.
And holy crap Jade hits like a truck. I literally just added her to my party last night, and she's still using her default equipped spear, but she's doing way more damage than MC (granted, he is using a 1H so there is a damage differential in weapon family) but still. She's crazy strong.
My Jade used to be exclusively Claws (the lower ATK power was offset by the fact that claws hit twice, so where a 100 ATK power spear sounds good, a 75 ATK power claw hitting twice does more damage). I've switched Jade to Spear though because I'm at the point of farming metal slimes to get to level 99, and Lightning Thrust has a pretty good crit rate, coupled with Multi-thrust being 4 hits to Hardclaw's 3. A maxed out claw tree for Jade will give her high natural crit, and most end game claws have a natural +5% crit chance, with some claws also being capable to +3 to have an 8% crit.
Erik is also in my team almost full time because of dual-wielding uber-falcon blades. He's also a natural born crit-ter. End game gear is pretty much exclusively craft only, and the final recipe books take one weapon that can't be sold, and ask you to upgrade it (Gringham Whip into Mega, into Giga). However, this means crafting mats are at a premium, and in most cases, it's just easier to have Erik steal them as the common drop from farmable enemies.

So far my team is two sets of specialists: MC at all times because he's the hero, and then Erik (boomeranger), Serena, and Veronica for traveling (because they all have could group attacks) and Sylvando, Jade, and Rab for bosses because they have more convenient area healing and single-target damage.

My plan is:
MC: DW Phys Damage
Erik: Boomerangsfor AoE traps for some single target
Serena: Heals/Buff wandage
Jade: Spears for damage and give her all the tanky seeds to be a parry tank in slot 1
And never swapping weapons/members because I don't like swapping in games.
I've gotten into the habit of having an A-team who I always make sure has the best equipment possible, and a B-team who has reasonably good equipment but not necessarily the best.
For regular encounters, I always use my A-team. For boss fights and tougher encounters that take you by surprise, like the mimic variants, I always start the fight with my B-team and swap in A-team members as people either run out of MP or die.
Right now my team is sword/shield MC, spear Jade, staff Rab and staff Veronica. I like having the option to do double offensive magic with Rab switching to heals as needed, but I haven't had much difficulty in boss fights through the winter castle. Then again I'm a longtime DQ vet and I have a hard time not grinding a bit.
I think I might be missing out on some good pep combos but pep is too sporadic to be truly reliable.
I just got the Magic Key, and this team has made the last 4 bosses a big joke:
Jade: All points in Allure, spam Sexy Beam for 150-200 per hit
MC: Spam Cutting Edge from Greatswords
Sylvando: Oomph the Hero / Hustle Dance (heals for over 100 in charm gear)
Rab: Sap the boss (this is really important!) + backup healer
Seriously though, the charm skills for Jade (Sexy Beam) and Sylvando (Hustle Dance) are REALLY GOOD.
I've found that the trick with pep powers is to wait until a character is about to lose pepped up status at the start of their next turn (the blue glow around their character portrait will begin blinking in and out), then use that character to unleash the biggest pep power you've got.
This allows you to get the most value out of the pepped up status while still getting to use those big three-man finishers. You have to actually pay attention though. If you fail to notice that a character is about to lose pep, you'll miss your chance.
5-star crafting recipes are no joke, especially for weapons, which feels harder to make than armor. Really need to get the MC as many levels as possible not just for new flourishes but for all that extra focus to spam good flourishes with.
As you would expect from his background as a world famous jester, Sylvando continues to be the breakout star of party talk.
"All of us are friends, of course, but you and Erik have a special bond. You're like brothers. After our quest is over, I need to get myself thrown into the Heliodoran dungeons. It's apparently a great place to start a lifelong relationship!"
Almost won rank c in the monster arena in DQ8. Kinda glad Jessica doesn't change when she's wearing the bunny suit you win from rank f, she just wears her normal clothes.
So, here's a weird trick I just discovered today. The skill board does not necessarily require that the skills you possess link to the center. You can only unlock a skill adjacent to a position on the board you already own (and you always own the center), but if you use Rectification to reset a particular branch in such a way that certain unlocked skills are "stranded", you get to keep the "stranded" skills. Most of the skill boards don't let you do anything interesting with this, but, for instance, if you buy your way up to Strength +25 in Swordmastery for the Hero and then Rectify away Greatswords, you get to keep the Strength +25 and work your way into a different skill tree. (Or just buy your way back down to Cutting Edge and Helichopter without having spent points on Greatsword Guard.) You can also do this with Jade's board by buying your way into the middle of one of the four quadrants through the adjacent one. It doesn't seem that useful in the long run since eventually you can buy all those stat boosts anyway, but it's a neat trick. (Sounds like the kind of thing a speedrunner will use to great effect at some point.)

I'd heard a lot of horror stories about the tentacular, but also some good advice. I brought the cannon along, and used Persecutter to eliminate the tentacles at the beginning of the fight. Erik's Sleeper Hit/Persecutter combo carried me most of the way to victory after that.
Kupi: "Mermaid Queen, I can't be arsed to hunt it down myself. Tell me where the final orb is."

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
Evasion seems pretty low as it is. Some of their set piece gear gives them up to like, 10% dodge chance normally, with some accessories boosting that, and the stances will further bump that up, but I almost always ignore those skills.
They might be useful if you have some of the draconian quests active, but if you're just running the normal game, it's always better to just kill everything before they get you.
I'm approaching the final dungeon in act 2. Just taking the time to tie up loose ends and complete all of the quests available.
Really have been enjoying the game. Eventually I'll have to collect all of the items and reforge stuff for the achievements.
You only need to reforge 10 items for an achievement. Unless you're going to fill out the entire accolade book? There is an accolade for making everything (including non-recipe gear) +3.
By the way: Useful tip for getting those 4* and up recipes to +3? Sizzly Puff at the start. It never dawned on me that I could raise the forge temperature above the initial 1000°C. Doing so means you're likely to actually crit on some of those high skill items, on top of flourishes just being better when the heat is higher. For 5* recipes, I usually heat it to 2200° then start hammering. Hasn't failed me yet.

Man I just got to the point of the world opening up a bit in the first chapter. This game is so damn good. And I got Dual wield on my MC now which is awesome.
What's less awesome is I am no longer sure who to use for my party. I didn't expect to like Veronica so much which throw a wrench in all of my plans. I was going to use Erik as a boomerang guy. But with Veronica in the running she just does AoE damage straight up better. Like she has less of a cost to do more damage more reliably. Just straight up better in every aspect than boomeranging even with Twomerang.
So do I replace Erik's spot in my line-up for Veronica?
Or Maybe keep both of them and just end up not using Jade as planned?
I've started using Veronica for clearing trash and XP grinding, and swapping Erik into her spot for bosses.
Erik is the boss killer.
His Cobra Strike to envenom + his boulder traps ensure that the boss is taking a huge chunk of damage even if the party is incapacitated or somehow unable to act, which seems to happen a lot on bosses. The "passive" damage that Erik provides has saved my ass on numerous occasions.

My Erik is straight boomerangs so no dagger skills would be used with him. Working over to the Dual Wield there for him right now but still not gonna use daggers! I stick to single weapon types, just a personal thing.
Hit the halfway point the other day! HOO BOY IS THAT PRETTY COOL OR WHAT. LIKE. WOW. WHAT? WOW.

Also fuck he hits pretty damn hard. I don't see the point of building into anything but Greatswords for the moment so he's basically just MC 2, which is fine. Maybe later on once I get the full party back there might be incentive to build him differently? But Greatswords, bruh.
Also also, I like that they gave you access to a Light-damage Greatsword pretty much right away, that shit fucking wRECKED HOUSE when I went to Heliodor castle.
My plan at the mom' is to give him two Wristorative +3s (but fuck me those are hard to rework!!!) and just have him spam the self-damage-big-damage attack.
anyway, i think pulling an FF6 ruined world scenario is FUCKING COOL AS SHIT THO. DAMN.
I'm 44 hours in. Won't click your spoiler even though I want to. I think I'm probably another 2-3 hours of gameplay from that point, depending on how long it takes for this episode to play out, for lack of a better term.

Man. Sometimes this game goes dark. At work the other day my friends were railing on me saying I should be playing Spider-Man instead of playing this cartoony game for kids. Ahh, how little they know about Dragon Quest. This game might be bright and happy looking, but some of the themes and stories they explore are definitely not for kids.
The ending of Michelle's story was heartbreaking and surprisingly grim.

He's the game's best tank by far (911HP at level 99, about 80HP more than any other character at 99) so you can definitely build him to be GOD OF DEFENSE if you wanted to. It's also worth noting that Axes in this game are 1H, so he can absolutely rock an axe and shield and moves like Parallax hit fucking hard. Most of the late game axes also have built in chances to reduce enemy defense or attack, making them a good piece of utility.

Oh yea, btw Mimics in this game?
DO NOT FUCK AROUND.
Jesus fuck.
My first mimic involved at least 5 character deaths and barely finished it with 2 people alive.
The next mimic was a game over.
And at a little under 40 hours in now I can say that putting your money in the bank is still important. Was certainly not just an early game thing. I have saved tons of money by keeping it in there.
I still don't use the bank. I just shut the game down and reload the last save. I've never lost progress doing this either, since the game is super generous with auto saves and statues in all major dungeons.
Mimics are definitely super mean. Their crit rate is insane. They one-shot dudes all the time. I fought a giant mimic and had to cycle to my 2nd string players and even still barely won with that.

That seems so weird!
I'm still in the first act and I've run into to so many places where the last auto save was 15 to 20+ minutes away. Heck the last dungeon I was in around the Octagonia area has no statues at all in it. And that's where I ran into my first mimic. If you die in there it's re-do the whole dungeon or just give up a few hundred gold if using the bank. Not even sure why not just use the bank just in case for that scenario.
Not to mention if you are trying to grind out a level or two. Then there is never going to be an auto save around and I have definitely died while grinding at least once so far.
I've done all my grinding thus far in open-world zones, not dungeons.
With the exception of a dungeon that you haven't gotten to yet. The last dungeon I cleared, which was yesterday afternoon, it had really easy packs of monsters that were nearly benign and would call for help, and I was bringing in like 1300-1600 XP per battle, so I farmed the crap out of those packs.

You can manipulate/force an auto-save by zoning. I mean, that's actually how it works, it's not on a timer, it only auto-saves when the game zones. Going up/down floors, entering/exiting, anything that produces a load screen.
Some dungeons have more than others.
I've decided to use the bank just because I don't want to have to worry about losing exp or items or w/e. I already have over 100k squirreled away, I regularly dump anything I get in there, so if I do die it's not a huge loss at all. And then I can just reload from a save point instead of auto-save.
ALSO BECAUSE RELOADING FROM SAVE LETS YOU ACTUALLY SKIP CUTSCENES. Like holy shit that alone is worth it.
i've been lazy about using the bank but mostly because money has been really low utility so far; gathering and crafting have kept my team more or less ahead of any vendor curve
