    There is the Lego thread.

    https://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/230276/the-lego-thread

I'm so going to get one on Aug 1. Well try at least. The nice thing is that Lego tends to put stuff up at midnight EST which is 9 PST.

That box looks huge. Or is it just a camera trick?

DVD size case for an SD card. Well, a microSD card in an SD card adapter, with cover art label.

That's awesome. Well not the huge case, but that it is a case to hold a microSD card.

It was the most economical case they could find, really. Rusty Pixels ( https://www.rustypixels.uk/ ) released three games at the same time; Baggers in Space, Tyvarian and Warhawk, all physical like this. I could only stretch to one of them, and so far they're all physical only (and even then only for pre-orders since the market is obviously so limited), but they should all get digital releases somewhere not too far down the line. They've already done a few others with digital releases, some of them free, like Crowley World Tour (a terrific Tetris clone) and a remake of Scramble. The Next's own software/firmware distro includes a demo of Warhawk too. Everything of theirs that I've played so far has been very polished and with excellent controls; very playable, as the term used to be.

Is there a way for an SD card to be held in a DVD case besides just rattling around inside?

It's not an actual DVD case, just the same size as one. It's intended for SD cards.

I got an 8bitDo controller for my MiSTer to replace the buffalo snes ones I had and the difference in quality / enjoyability is friggin huge. They're great. I'm out here doing hadookens consistently for the first time in my life.

Pac Man's character is difficult to explain even to the Japanese -- he is an innocent character. He hasn't been educated to discern between good and evil. He acts more like a small child than a grown-up person. Think of him as a child learning in the course of his daily activities. If someone tells him guns are evil, he would be the type to rush out and eat guns. But he would most probably eat any gun, even the pistols of policemen who need them.

I got the genesis non-bluetooth one connected with a long usb cable I have on hand for my ps4 controllers (the one that it comes with is pretty short) because the mister wiki cites them as being particularly low latency, but I have a feeling any of their products will do you right:

The 2.4 ghz wireless one is nearly as good, you just plug the dongle into your mister. But bluetooth latency is like, why even bother with a mister in the first place.

All this talk of the spiritual sequel to Suikoden has me itching to play the original games. I have them on my PS3, but my controller died a long time ago meaning I have to leave it plugged in to work. I could just get a really long cable, but I’d also would love a fast forward feature.

Now I’m looking at the rabbit hole from afar and wondering if I shouldn’t just let the urges pass and forget the whole thing.

Really? Yikes. Could just buy it with a guest account and try to link it after? If not I can pick one up if you need.

Edit: That is if they don't limit it to 1 per account.

Edit 2: PM me if you need me to pick one up.

I was able to order the Lego NES just now, no problems.

Oh, if you haven't heard, the set definitely belongs here -- it's a nearly full-size Lego NES, complete with controller and cart. It's paired with an 80s-style TV depicting 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. If you turn the crank on the side, the background will scroll and Mario will jump over obstacles and squash Goombas.

It also has an amazing surprise:
The hollow space in the NES depicts world 1-2, complete with the lifts and the warp zone.

It ALSO comes with a super mushroom expansion for the Mario Lego modular playsets, which also belong here.

I'm now $229 poorer, is what I'm saying.

I just got that little NES ornament. The video game Hallmark Keepsake ornaments have been pretty neat. I have mini arcade machine ornaments of Pac Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Defender and Joust.

I can almost make the NES tower of power, but I’ll never shell out that kind of money for a Lego NES that doesn’t even play anything.

I didn't know about those. I have tons of Hallmark Keepsake ornaments, but didn't know they were doing video game systems. Only seen the characters.

I do have a Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots one, though, and the robots move and punch so that's great.

A few people here were interested in the promised second Kickstarter for the ZX Spectrum Next. Well, wait no more, because it starts today, at 9pm UK time. There will be 100 units at a discounted Early Bird price, so if you definitely want one, it's worth trying to get in early.

Obviously I can't link to it because of forum rules, but it should be nice and easy to find. What I can do is link you to the official website at https://www.specnext.com/ , annd there's an excellent Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/specnext/ (and there are several spin-off groups for assorted things like games, BASIC programming, the NXTel online service, etc, etc).

Wow, I logged in right at 1, got the early bird in my basket... and was cart jacked. I have no idea why, but the extra amount is just making me pause on wanting it. I have time to think about it since it is backed and will be open for 30 days.

Edit: I just realized why I'm a bit hesitant on it. The ZX doesn't have the emotional tug like it should because my main experience with the unit/line is the Timex Sinclair 1000 which was the US model. I know that this is a spiritual successor to it, but the memory of typing on a membrane keyboard is what tugs at my heart. Plus the hours upon hours of typing in all the code, debugging and playing the simple game on the TV is what I have memories of. Too bad my original Sinclair doesn't work because it would be fun to hook up and play with. I did see that they go for around $50-100 on eBay so I could get a replacement (for nearly the same price as my Dad paid for it long ago).

I don't want to diminish the feeling for this unit and thank you Jazz for keeping me in the loop on this relist. I'm going to sit and think about this one since it is just an impulse buy and probably will be a dust collector after I get it. Heck my C64 Mini is still in its box after playing with a few games on it. Who knows, I might end up buying one just to have.

You've got 30 days to think about it, that's perfectly alright!

I'm amazed how well it's doing so far, funded in under 6 minutes, hit 200% of its goal in under 40 minutes. Several people had the same problem, the site noticeably slowed as it went live. The demand is clearly high. And the team are absolutely blown away on Facebook. (Side note: when your comment gets liked by someone with an actual BAFTA award, it feels kinda cool! )

If you want typing in code, debugging and playing those simple things, it can do that. In fact that's something it specialises in, and any old code for original Timex or Sinclair machines should run just fine on it. Obviously it'll be more money than an original but it is a more powerful and more flexible machine, albeit one that still is accessible enough to program down to the bare metal on.

Anyway, peruse the Facebook groups, see if it catches your imagination with what people are already doing with them. Mine is currently sitting on a shelf, I admit, but that is primarily due to how real life has played out for me this last little while. But I will get it out again at some point, I'll never get rid of it. It's a fascinating machine in its own right, and that it sort of doubles as just something to play my old Speccy faves on is just part of its charm.

I've gone through some of the sites and it really is making me feel like there is this whole world that I was never part of. Which makes sense given that this unit was more in the UK/Europe part of the world than here. The things people talk about with lots of love is what I would say about if Apple remade the Apple ][ line here. Imagine if Apple made an Apple ][e+ or whatever mini here that could run all of the old Apple programs. Not only does do play all the older games and programs, but allows you to play newer ones and make your own. That is super cool and the community behind the little machine is truly astounding!

I did also read the reasoning behind the price increase. Parts costs went up, it honestly also looks like this is a 1GB memory rather than 512MB of memory, they had to pay taxes, and other costs going up. They are running this more of a labor of love than to make a ton of money off of it which is super admirable given where they came from. I will definitely think about it and I do have a lot of things to think about regarding purchasing. At this moment in time I am actually leaning towards living through the community and you for the joy and not picking one up. Heck I still have dreams of downloading a bunch of the old Apple ][ software and loading it up on my Pi Apple emulator to relive my childhood... which I have not done yet.... I have so many ideas and never going through with them. =P

Also yeah, I understand why your Next is sitting waiting to be used. You'll have lots of time to play with it and I hope you enjoy your time. I know the community is huge for this and you'll never run out of new things to try out on it!

Correction: It's 1MB of memory rather than the initial 512KB  Although it's already hit a stretch which will get all of them 2MB :+1: (Which means I really need to get the extra 1MB chips for mine sooner or later!)

Mine has been used a bit, I've played a bunch of stuff on it both old and new, but yeah, I just haven't used it in a while. But it's not going anywhere :)

Hahahahahahaha! I can't believe I wrote 1GB instead of 1MB! That's cool they hit the stretch goal for 2MB. I also love how they let you install your own RPiZero if you want to "save" money there. Think I do wish they sold just the board again as an option. That would so fit my tinker urge and lower the price.

Oh right, another 13 games were announced for the Astro City Mini:

    Bonanza Bros
    Columns
    Cotton
    Crack Down
    ESWAT
    Gain Ground
    Ichidant-R
    Puyo Puyo
    Shadow Dancer
    Shinobi
    Wonder Boy
    Wonder Boy in Monster Land
    Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair

Doesn't quite impress me as much as the games revealed with the initial announcement:

    Alien Syndrome
    Alien Storm
    Golden Axe
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
    Columns II
    Dark Edge
    Puzzle & Action: Tant-R
    Virtua Fighter
    Fantasy Zone
    Altered Beast

I mean, we have to get some super scalers in there, right? Space Harrier? Afterburner? Outrun?

That list has Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair in it. I played the hell out of the Genesis version of the game in March for a competition on retroachievements and just reading the name makes me twitch. It culminated in beating the whole game without dying.

I do not recommend attempting this.

The ZX Spectrum Next issue 2 Kickstarter is now over, and it's safe to say it's been a resounding success; with an original goal of £250,000 (surpassed in about 5 minutes), it eventually closed at over £1.8 million with every stretch goal handily reached. Over 5200 more units will eventually join the 3100 or so that currently exist!

Cool! I ended up not buying one after thinking more about it. As much as it is cool, it just wasn't my childhood memories and more of everybody else's who actually had the newer Spectrum in Europe. I'm glad that they had such a success though since I was rooting for them. They did a great job before and this new unit as well.

Thank you so much for letting me know about it and keeping me in mind when it went live. I'm sorry I didn't buy one in the end though, but seriously I can't thank you enough for remembering me.

I had drafted this post and somehow failed to actually post it... its a great video that shows off all of the games (in MAME?) that will be in this unit. The arcade originals can be very different from the home ports you might be used to so its a great way to see what to expect.

Anyway if you just want to know the remaining Astro City Mini titles, in addition to the rest of the list posted above:

    Scramble Spirits
    Ninja Princess
    Arabian Fight
    Sonic Boom
    Stack Columns
    Flicky
    Quartet 2
    Puyo Puyo Tsu
    Thunder Force AC
    Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars
    Rad Mobile
    Space Harrier
    Seishun Scandal / My Hero

An interesting observation by SLX is that none of the games on the full list use all 6 buttons on the unit. Will there be another version forthcoming with new games? Is there some unannounced way to add them digitally? Are they just there for hackers to take advantage of? Mysteries abound.
