We got hordes of trick-or-treaters. I had to leave about 45 minutes in to run to CVS and buy more candy! Was great. And we met a bunch of the neighbors, so that was a nice bonus.

Some kids tried to pull a con on me at the door; I don't know if it was a suggestion from their father on the street or what

Three of them rolled up to the door, and the smallest (a boy of maybe 9 or 10) said "hey we've been at this for an hour and we're real thirsty! Can we maybe get a glass of water?"

So I say sure! So long as you can drink it real fast at the door (it's cold out and I didn't want to leave the door open long), and the boy yells back at his dad excitedly to say they're getting a drink

Our kitchen is around a partition, so I go over there and very quickly grab two cups, because leaving strange kids to stand in your front hall seems like a bad call

I round the corner and the ringleader has his hand outstretched, a few inches away from the candy bowl, before smoothly pretending it was just a joke and his arm didn't go far enough to get the candy, see??? And he reached his arm back to his side and back out again for effect

Then four more of his buddies show up and go "you got water?? Can I also get some water???"

And I say "nice try, guys," give them all candy, and shoo them away

    You gotta respect the grift

Took my brother's kids Trick-or-Treating for an hour after watching Doobh's Halloween Twitch stream. Just got back home, and I'm watching them at my house for another couple hours because their dad's out of town and their mom has work. They wanted to watch Star Trek, because I got the 11 year old and the 8 year old hooked on it the last few times I babysat. I guess they're done with TNG and DS9 at home, and have moved onto Voyager? I'm cool with Voyager. Or at least I hate it less than most. So long as I make sure to remind the niece that if she ever meets a guy like Tom Paris in real life, she shouldn't drink any liquids he has an opportunity to interact with, and point out that Robert Beltran is a very nice man in real life but Chakotay's culture is inauthentic bullshit, everything's cool.

So five minutes ago I start up Voyager season 2, episode 8. Which begins with this conversation:

(Captain Janeway is moving quickly through a corridor when Neelix joins her.)

Neelix (exuberant to a fault): "Ah captain! The computer told me I'd find you on deck 11, section 4b, starboard side, and here you are!"

Captain Janeway (clearly tense and barely keeping it together): "What can I do for you Neelix?"

Neelix: "I assumed you'd want to talk to me."

    Captain Janeway: "About?"

    Neelix: "About the Botha!"

So. The Botha are some aliens she has to negotiate with or something. But now I have a partially dissolved and very sharp feeling shard of sour apple jolly rancher lodged in my nasal passage because I snort-laughed so hard.

    Aah, tonight was mixed.

Moriveth doesn’t get back until 7 pm. I arrived home at 6 pm with the kids and there were hoards of kids already trick or treating. So I panicked, not wanting the kids to miss out, and the kids get dressed.

We set off at 6.40 or so and I left two GIANT buckets of candy and also cars and glow sticks (for TEAL kids) on our porch. Rookie error, I know. By the time Mori got home both buckets were fully emptied.

    It was also raining!

  • TallahasseerielTallahasseeriel Registered User regular
Next year leave out buckets, but have them on a little table. And unbeknownst to the trick or treaters, mori is hiding beneath the table, and can reach up wearing a monster glove through the buckets.

Put the deep fear into them children.

    Update on this

    It fuckin ruled!

I don't want to type it all up on my phone right now, but we just finished the game, and we collaboratively created a whole fiction for the house and the omens and shit

It actually ended up being a coherent story! That was my best case scenario!

The highlight of my night was laughing along with my Uber passengers as we watched a small, leashed dog tried to attack a guy dressed as Godzilla. That dog was not having that costume at all.

So, costume and chili contests at my workplace were fun. I like my costume, though the robe was a bit more monk and not enough wizard for some people.

So I was thinking, maybe next year I could use the robe again, and lean into that. I had the idea of wearing the robe and carrying a holy book, but underneath the robe, I'm a vampire or werewolf or other such monster, disguised as a holy man. Could be a neat look.

Managed to wrangle a good trick-or-treat for the kids. Started with after-school pick-up at 6 p.m. and getting costumes on. Walked past the shops near our apartment and got some candy (first year trick-or-treating at shops- didn't know this was actually a thing. But I guess it's what you do before it gets dark). Went to the local kids parade just as it was starting to move, so we didn't have to stand around. Only issue was the 4 year-old kept trying to wander off while I was keeping the 2 year-old on track.. had to threaten to take her candy if she went too far away. My husband was still coming home from work, and I had to keep both of them from getting lost in the massive group of people. Met up with some friends in the parade. That was the biggest score- our apartment complex is smaller and doesn't give out a lot of candy- said friends live in a bigger/ more affluent building with great candy. Two year-old doesn't quite comprehend "only take one candy from the bowl", and thinks three is the best number. I gave up correcting him- if you're shoving a bowl of candy in a toddler's face, expect some misbehavior. I got too tired by the end of the night to correct him. My husband tried when he got there, but also gave up eventually.
Now we have a massive amount of candy. Have to figure out how to sneak some away from the kids to eat it myself.

If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing

Our kids made it (both sides of) three blocks before they had enough stuff that their arms were tired, though that's possibly because someone was giving out normal-sized cans of pop which really adds to the weight.

(there were the usual numbers of probably-too-big-for-this-stuff kids with pillowcases, but the one who was toting a _wheely bin_ behind himself seemed to be taking things a bit too far. Unless it was part of the costume, I guess)

    Costumes this year:

N was a mad scientist, or possibly just a scientist who's very bad at doing science (it always surprises me how fast shirts burn once they get going, but we're getting better at making just a scorch mark with practise):
