Between Here and here, that thread spent about 30 minutes bouncing around the G&T frontpage spewing the worst sort of stupid all over your Games and Technology forum.
In that period, we received exactly ONE (1) reported post about it, which leads me to conclude that either you guys are scared to use the "report this post" feature, or you are perfectly fine with that sort of idiocy mixing with your Games and your Technology.
So, which is it?

Honestly though, it's no secret that every forum's worst offenders are its most regular posters. If you see someone being an idiot and you think they're disrupting the thread they're posting in--or the entire forum--report the post. Obviously you should use some common sense, and not just hit the report post button when someone disagrees with you or makes a dumb joke, but if you really think something needs mod attention, you have tools at hand.
There's also a link at the bottom of the thread index that I'm not sure everyone knows about: View Forum Leaders. This serves the same function as the "mods online" group that used to be at the top of the Who's Online in the phpbb forums. If you need to get a mod the hell right now you can still check to see who's actively foruming and contact someone directly.

I know I did. If mods for other subforums aren't held to the same standards as other posters, I find it pointless to help moderators with their job. Mods are too often trolling G&T or H/A. If they're willing to end that bullshit, then I'll do my part to report posts/threads in a timely manner.
It's pretty effective. There's a hidden forum that all mods can view where a new thread is created for each reported post. Any time a mod passes the thread index, he/she can see if there's a new thread entitled "Reported post by _____". Stuff can be referred to the subforum's mod group quickly and handled just as quickly, if it's being reported in a swift manner.
Despite our recurring flaws, which seem to show up in the predictable threads (console discussion, discussion of immensely anticipated games, discussion of tired old arguments), I do think G&T is a much better place to read and post than it was 6-8 months ago. I think it would be a lot better if veteran forumers would think for a bit longer before hitting the Submit Reply button. In a lot of cases.
It's not really "SE behavior" at all. If you pay close attention to happenings in SE, you'll see that what often gets characterized as "SE behavior" is really just the painful antics of a few dozen SE regulars who go apeshit over everything they don't like. They troll new posters they don't like, they shit on new threads they don't approve. They're good people with bad habits, and recently they're earning red cards for it as the SE mods clamp down a bit tighter.
It's the same around here. We've got a lot of good people who make good posts who just can't control themselves when their buttons get pushed. The wrong thread at the wrong time, and the floodgates just burst open and people start acting like chimpanzees.
I think Ramius' intent in starting this thread was to point out that this kind of nonsense only goes on when people let it go on. If you see this kind of thing happening, report the post, get a mod, and don't fan the flames.
A perfect solution? No... but we're all just people trying to run a fun messageboard.
Having a solid definition of what is/isn't reportable would be good. I was tempted to fire off a report but held back as I've always though they're for serious offenses that may fly under the radar or obvious site-whoring/spam.
I disagree with K that 6-8 months ago the forums were much less readable. I think now they've started to seriously degrade. Why is it? Difference in views between mods and posters? Lack of a chat thread to dick around in?

Is it any wonder? You're basically encouraging people to not use this feature unless it's absolutely clear. There's three sentences there, all three encourage a person not to submit the report. If you want more reports being sent, maybe start there.
I don't think many of us are pleased with pheezer FD's response. Doesn't contribute and only stirs people up. Like Voro pointed out, if you're serious about curbing this sort of behavior it has to be consistent from top to bottom.

I saw that and thought about locking it, but it seems to be being accepted as a legitimate game-on thread, so I'm leaving it open.
That's the great thing about reporting posts is that it gives a moderator or admin the chance to make the determination whether or not something needs done. So, easy for you guys to use, more productive than fanning flames of stupidity, and not binding in a "by reporting this post I'm putting a permanent dent on someone's record" sort of way.
We worded things pretty strictly when we first rolled out the report-post feature because we were afraid of it being overly abused. But seeing as it is being used less than we'd like, we can and should probably loosen up the wording that goes with it. Really, it will have to be something everybody learns with experience, which this thread is helpful with because now you all know that a bunch of pet pictures are a reportable offense in a thread about Bungie vs Nintendo.

Any sane person opened the thread, read the OP and thought to himself 'Nuh uh, not today, not any day'. I guess that's why nobody reported it. Anybody that might have wasn't going near it to begin with.
I too would like a more solid guidelines as to what is reportable. Are things like AOL speak (u, ur) things we should be reporting?
Also, treating your subforum like a gang and calling a certain behavior "SE" or "G&T" really does deserve you some mocking.
I have to agree with this.
I've seen a lot of threads that start out bad and just keep getting worse. And sometimes I find myself typing something into the Quick Reply area. And then I'm like "wait, no" and close the window.
I guess the general assumption among people is that the mods will see the thread and deal with it without being told about it, but that's an erroneous assumption, obviously. It's impossible for the mods to find out about everything that's going on unless we as forumers start helping them out more.

Well, the beginning of your post seems to suggest that the character of a forum is defined by it's users. Then you seem to contradict that by saying that there isn't a characteristic behaviour of any particular forum.

You can report moderator posts as you see fit. Be aware that the admins have a lot of forums to worry about and may or may not see the reported post, however. Also, be aware that we are unlikely to respond publicly to a post reporting a moderator. We will probably either agree or disagree with it in the reported-posts forum.
I think I, at least, will be prone to grant moderators more leeway then you might feel we should grant them, if they contribute positively in enough ways to offset their vices. But really, moderator oversight is much more in Cardboard Tube's hands than mine.
As for the last thing, we both know it wouldn't be the first time. 8-)

I'm not bashing SE, just pointing out how different it is. Then I think people think they can do the same in SE in other forums, and then bad shit happens.
edit: not blaming either, it's just a problem we as a forum have. With a dispairty between the environments, it's possible people don't see there needs to be a change. I could be wrong here too, just an idea. I agree with K that SE is pretty cool, when there aren't the retards screwing it up.
