Oh wow this corporate retreat/training/etc facility is really excessive. I thought HHMI’s Janelia campus where I was a student was plush but this is really something else (and at least at janelia they...actually do valuable work). Oof this is kinda repugnant. These people have too much money.
Do your part in siphoning the money away from them.
Ugh this is actually just really gross
I mean it’s interesting as a tourist and obviously fun to earn money but I don’t want to become someone who thinks this is normal or appropriate “Everything is complimentary here except alcohol and shoe shines” —front desk staff Gah
Well, i’ll go get some free lunch and go appreciate the interior design I suppose, since weather’s bad and I can’t go outside
Really does remind me a bit of HHMI campus, maybe because of the long and narrow layout and use of light-colored wood
Oh man I just gotta keep it together on three hours of sleep and on top of that be super friendly and ~network~
Definitely refrain from expressing The above view out loud or in facial expression
Steal everything that isn't nailed down and then get mad when they arrest you because they said everything was complimentary.
I scared an old person in the break room today, they mentioned reading a story about the huge push towards automation and how nobody would have jobs and why would they do that, because then nobody would be able to buy the things they're selling, it doesn't make any sense, and I went way in on how bad capitalism is and have you heard the good word of eating the rich my friend
You should have been like, "yes, I too think we should advocate for a 20hr work week, I'm glad you brought it up."
I taught him what universal basic income was!
Preach it
I also reassured him that, as someone close to retirement, he would probably be dead before the most disastrous effects of our failure to prepare for this entirely avoidable collapse came to pass
Take an eames chair if you see one, and then gift it to me if you're my secret santa.
That’s not quite the aesthetic they have going on. Chairs that aren’t roller chairs in company colors have a sort of...hm rectangular/horizontal parallel lines aesthetic to them. Almost pseudo Asian inspired? I don’t know how to describe furniture.

since I can't actually talk about it, this is the thing you should click on and download but don't use the uninstaller to delete it because bugs and stuff might delete your computer or something

All the chairs are yoga balls.
No, that’s not it. It’s basically like the next level of niceness up from the furniture in the front rooms of luxury apartments in dc. Trying to look fancy yet a bit eclectic.
And yeah this thing where like HHMI basically one wall is just windows looking out onto an artificial lake. Very pretty. But then there are signs saying that looking at nature has been shown to boost productivity.
Wow the free food is really good though
No gym clothes allowed in the eating area; please change; there are post-workout snacks available in the gym! Eesh...
It's the best stuff they have on the site but I don't think it's really horror in the classic Halloween way; just in a more politically terrifying way
In current climates it really, really reads easily as a rather blunt metaphor for how fascism is winning
They nuked it in WW2 and they thought it was all over, but it just lay dormant waiting for someone to pick up a book and think about the idea again
In a more "los desaparecidos" kind of way it's also terrifying in the fascist sense because it is literal disappearances; people will vanish and you can't even begin to think about them - there is no press, no knowledge; the idea of these decentralized resistance cells being methodically crushed one by one; it's this inexorable cult that openly spreads disinformation and destruction and the ugly unity of mass de-individuality as their selling points
honestly I'm not a fan of reading stuff as metaphors, as good a take as this is

I think we've got to get more flashy gems and precious metals into the corporate aesthetic before dragons start taking over. The fancy-day-spa aesthetic isn't something they go for, nor is the minimalist but weirdly into marble and chrome one.

Yeah, the porn was so popular that they made a video game based on it
They have to keep releasing new characters to refresh the porn pairings
