Dang, I gotta try that build. Looks risky (fun) as hell.

I tried it once the Civil War tech advance happened. It is...not great. But, it is very fun!

    A new Battletech Dev Diary:
Hey ‘Mech fans. My name is Dave McCoy and I’m a technical artist here at Harebrained Schemes. I joined the HBS team almost exactly one year ago to help take on a really exciting challenge.

BATTLETECH had previously allowed players to fight in some larger military and industrial bases. But studio leadership wondered about the possibility of also letting players deploy ‘Mechs into the hearts of sprawling futuristic cities. They wanted to create new kinds of battlefields based on horizon-to-horizon urban sprawl. Corporate skyscrapers and huge apartment blocks, industrial and office parks and memorial plazas and military parade grounds, parking lots and wide city streets and intersections filled with thousands of abandoned cars and buses, neon and holographic signs everywhere and high rooftops you could jump-jet to that were covered in cell towers and machinery and exhaust vents billowing steam and smoke and… well, everything else you would expect to find in the dense and varied landscape of a major metropolis.
And then pretty pictures start showing up, so read the rest over there:

The little Champ is fun. The quirks mean SRM6 is great on it. I dropped the flamers for some small lasers because in my only match with it so far I ran into a dual gauss... Thanatos? It had ECM and stealth, I think. It was a big chonkyboi that I could never target, and the lack of heat-generating weapons meant my flamers were useless. Managed to "solo" kill it when I finally lured it near a lance mate in a Jenner that helped me out but not enough to take the kill.

Grinner I cant figure out. But I also got stuck on Polar Highlands twice with it before getting a win in Canyon.

I also noticed my Marauder IIs are running standard armor and structure and XL engines, which explains why they all die instantly. I've got one with Gauss and 6 sPLas that has lots of wiggle room to upgrade, I just ran out of cBills. I need to stop buying and selling mechs- sold the Rifleman because I never got it to work after about 20 skill points of trying.

Grinner: 5 MPL, ECM. Need to have the ECM nodes filled out in skill tree though.

In non-Domination games I escort assaults to the front with ECM and to protect against cheeky lights (Piranhas, Commandos, Fleas) that go for an early kill. Once the fur ball starts I just start hunting other lights and badly damaged mechs that try to disengage.

Yeah Sensor tree is my #1 priority. I feel like I could only fit 4Mlas in it, too, but that might have also been due to insufficient funds.
By fit I mean within the tonnage- I used up the torso slots but I know the right arm has the energy hardpoints.

Hmm, this is pretty close to (if not exactly) the build I use: GRINNER

  • monkeykinsmonkeykins Registered User regular
Also I got it with the goal of figuring out stealth armor.

I am pretty sure I run my Grinner with 5 ML and stealth armor. Because I insist on running stealth armor on everything that can carry it.

I tested out a version with stealth armor, 4 MPL, and a Tag. It was amusing.

Yeah I think the meta is to run MPL, but I just like the heat of the MLs for some odd reason.

    Edit: Stupid autocorrect...

I often find myself having more uptime and sustained damage with medium laser builds than pulses. PL's do more damage, but it always feels like I take a huge heat hit for only a little more damage. With MPL builds often before I know it my mech is critically hot and I have to pull out of a fight.

    So the heavy mech challenge:

Only lost one in my Dragon when people didn't want to take top. Had my own EBJ and HBR and was able to complete it easily in both. Used the Trial Cataphract and while I hate the hard points, it did handle nicely. Took two wins, but I didn't get any kills/KMDDs in the first one.

Probably the easiest one of the weight class challenges this time around.

The Heavy challenge is just the worst. Because people are actually playing heavies, which seem to do well against mediums. I mostly played lights last night- realized my Commando didn't have ECM after two matches. Won a couple with the Grinner, but wasn't very useful. Still need to refit it, but I didn't feel like fiddling with it last night.

Airstrikes: how do they work? Do they drop along the line from you to the smoke at the time of calling it, centered on the smoke?

Forest Colony last night, the enemy team had all funneled into the one little winding canyon area with super high walls. Instead of spreading out around the perimeter and smashing them as the field out one at a time, my team decided to charge into it one at a time, while one guy on comms just kept pleading with them to stop. Meanwhile I took what ended up being a longer flank than I thought in my ACH, but busted up two enemy mechs just as my last teammate died.

If you've got an unawares enemy flank, do you typically go for center or side torso? I usually go for side, since they are quicker to pop and sometimes you get lucky with an XL engine, but I'm wondering now if just going for the center would be better?

Before the Light Engines came into play I would always go for a ST on IS mechs. But now I tend to go CT generally unless it is a mech that I know boats all or most of its firepower in the ST. Like the Marauders are an always go for their right side torso. If I have lasers, and know that the enemy mech boats arm weapons I chew those off first as well.

ST is still generally a safe bet on many mechs because losing the side torso on a mech with LFE/cXL cripples their heat dissipation. If they’re riding the red line they’re either going to shut down or cook themselves to death.

Still comes down to knowing the mech though. There are a few heavies and assaults that can get away with a standard engine.

I'm not looking forward to dragging that worthless Warhawk out of the garage to try and get a kill with it.

Even more important these days. Sure, even if they're running an LFE, sometimes removing a side torso will completely neuter their combat potential (by either removing all or most of their weapon systems).

Yeah, I've heard about that build. But the free champion Warhawk takes a a random assortment of lasers and a guass rifle instead. I remember hating the mech and that loadout the last time one of these events was going down.

Oh man...just had one of the best Dragon matches I've ever had using this B33f build.

Landed on a skirmish on Classic Forest Colony. A Mist Lynx and I take a couple shots at an ECM Shadow Cat watching our team deployment...but then we cautiously duck into the tunnel. Get out to the other side, and there's a Vindicator watching the other side of the tunnel. He calls for reinforcements, and gets a Hellbringer, the Shadow Cat, and something else to come back and poke their heads into the tunnel...

    One at a time.

Mist Lynx runs out to scatter their ranks, and I poke out to lob ERPPC+AC20 shots into their backsides. Unfortunately, the Mist Lynx ran back towards me to get back to the tunnel...but hugged a little too close to my ERPPC arm and I earned a TK. Still, little Mist Lynx did a rock solid job letting me soften everybody up or, in the case of the Shadow Cat, completely disarm them. Apparently, the enemy team redirecting a full lance (of heavies and mediums) to deal with a Dragon and Mist Lynx lets the other two lances get chewed up by the rest of my team. Personal end result:
    jl8tu200e0pu.jpg

I still feel pretty shitty about that TK...but, it didn't die in vain!

The last time I think I figured that mech out. You just huddle with a group and touch the other team. Hopefully you'll manage to be the last alive and kill a damaged mech.

Or you could be a troll and hide way back, letting your team die and wait for the damaged enemy mechs to come into range and kill away.

It feels like that thing could be a pretty mean ATM carrier. Hanging back is too risky in that barn though. Lights are gonna have you for lunch.

I'm trying to remember the exact loadout that I used last time there was a Warhawk challenge, and this is close. I might've replaced one of the heatsinks for another ton of ammo...but, without logging in and checking, this is my best guess.

EDIT - Well...5 matches later, and the ballistic damage day is done. I have a feeling tomorrow's energy damage day won't be nearly as quick.

Oh yeah, so I had a feeling that something was a little off.

I've adapted my King Crab build over to an Annihilator (the -2A variant, to be specific). Since the day I got it and loaded it up, it just felt squishier than the King Crab. At first, I chalked it up to the Anni being unskilled vs. my King Crab's 88 skill points (including a mostly-full up Survival tree). But tonight, I actually got it in my head to run a quick comparison of the quirks. Apparently my King Crab comes with a built-in 17 additional points of armor in the CT (+8 vs. +25), 13 additional armor in each torso (+4 vs. +17), and 8 more armor in the arms.

Maybe I should rethink what role my Annihilator is going to fill since it's obviously not going to be front-line tanking things compared to my King Crab. Maybe I should try out quad-light gauss and eff people up from second-line. Although, removing 100t of kickass from the front-line is less than ideal...

    Ugh...back to the drawing board.

    What build for the ANH?

Generally the advantage it has over the KGC is hard points and hit boxes. You can roll some damage in the ANH and even take hits on the arms, you also have the nice high hard points which gives you some ability to cover where the KGC has to go full frontal to get the arm mounts into the game

It took me 5 matches to get >120 damage in a match. Things did not go well. Finally gave up when I hit 600 damage and 3 kills, all at the end of a conquest match as the last mech standing, because I was chasing resource caps for the whole match.
