I was one of the many children who made the terrible mistake of asking for a Genesis instead of a Super Nintendo, so I missed out on that entire console's particular take on the genre (and the only platformer I owned on the Genesis was Sonic 2)

So in some ways my platformer DNA was written with the "you can instantly tell how everything works and interacts by the pixels" design ethos of Mega Man 2 and Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Bros 3, and then only came back to SNES platformers 20+ years later

I think you just scientifically explained why I can never get into Mega Man

Also the Retro DKC games, while a fun thing on their own, feel nothing like the Rare ones (they feel much worse IMO)

    Sister!

I enjoyed Tropical Freeze a lot more when I accepted it was never going to be the DKC I wanted and just took it as its own thing (although the level pacing and boss fights are just NOT my jam full stop)

I don't mean to refer to Mega Man requiring pixel-perfect jumps, which are effectively nonexistent even in the first of those games; I mean how classic Mega Man and other 8-bit platformers visually conveyed the information necessary in order to make those judgments at a glance

DKC is very muddy in comparison; the Returns games much less so

That's not to poop on DKC; its platforming is very much designed around that lack of clarity. But it's still there, and it needs some adjusting-to

DKC games tend to be very... rhythmic in their platforming. Timing is important but generally if you can get the timing right you can build a flow of movement that carries you through even parts of the level you might not be familiar with. Nailing a section of platforming in that game is satisfying to me in a way very few other games have matched.

Anyone interested in Smite or Paladins, Hi-Rez announced today that all their games will be cross-play and cross-progression (all your progression and purchases will be shared) across all platforms, including Smite and Paladins on Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Right now there's some free stuff for both of those on Steam which should carry over once that goes live: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/hirezpubweekend/

This is an interview with the showrunner and executive producer for the Castlevania series; it goes over how he views adaptations and the relationship between a given work and its source material, but it also covers a lot concerning how Shankar views games in general, as well as what makes games effective and memorable (namely that chasing technology is a dead end and effective experiences come from either good narratives or good mechanics)

It's a really interesting piece. Shankar's knowledge of Castlevania runs really deep, and his passion for the medium he's adapting really shines through. He's thought about the setting of Castlevania, and how all the different pieces relate to each other, a lot.

The reason I'm posting this in here is that on Nov 16, Shankar is going to be talking about a new project involving a series from a major Japanese publisher that they've been in negotiations with for a while. We have no idea what that series is, or who the publisher is, but because the internet is the way it is people are absolutely convinced it's going to be Zelda.

    It won't be.

But I'd be OK with it if it was.

It was Devil May Cry and you were all fools for thinking it was Fire Emblem

The actual story is that Shankar has acquired the rights to Devil May Cry
There's nothing in the announcement to clearly indicate it's actually going to get made at Netflix

I hear Netflix is doing a Devil May Cry show and NOT the Metal Gear Solid series you all thought.

Hey guess what, Netflix is doing a DMC show rather than the PaRappa the Rapper show everyone was hoping for.

    etc. etc.

Hey, if anyone is interested in Starfoxlink, the physical starter edition is almost half-off on the Ubisoft store, $39.74, for their early Black Friday sale.
This comes with a physical version of the game, the Arwing, Fox and the other main character pilot figures, 2 weapons, the controller mount, and a poster. Also, all the other ship, weapon, and pilot packs are 30% off. And if you order $40 worth of stuff, you'll also get a free PC copy of Rayman Legends, or order $60 worth of stuff and you'll get free shipping.

I was thinking of maybe getting back in to Smite because of that

    logged on, checked out skins

remembered that limited skins are a thing and are usually the absolute best ones (like the dragonkin Skadi skin) and got immediately turned off again

I hate hate HATE it when companies make stuff like that completely and utterly time-locked exclusive. Like, it's one thing if it just comes up once every year during a holiday or event, but when a company goes "lol sorry you weren't playing during this one week in october a year ago, guess you'll never be able get this really cool thing we put into the game" makes my blood boil, and it's especially infuriating when exclusive and limited skins are like half the goddamned skins in the game.

When I first started Heroes of the Storm was when the treasure goblin mount was up I was too poor in gold {the currency at the time} to get it now nearly 2 or 3 years later it still is a thorn when I see people with it.
I know they kind of fixed this but I find it annoying I have to watch people on Twitch for items I do want but it's giving me boxes from the previous event I did not really care about nor do I really want to watch these people

I tried out Brawlhalla since it's out on Switch now and I needed to play a game like that that DARES to actually include Rayman in it

and it makes me appreciate Smash's UI design so much more, because Brawlhalla is damn near impossible to parse on the Switch screen

All the characters are real tiny, everyone's lifebars and score is for some reason extremely tiny in the top right corner of the screen so you can never ever see it, and they don't do that thing of all the arrows pointing out which player is which character so I routinely can't find myself after I respawn

if I'm gonna be playing a Not Smash Bros game it has to be Rivals of Aether, I'm finding

    but it does have Rayman...

I have a copy of Let's Go Eevee coming from Gamefly, I did not know the games had version exclusives, I don't know WHY I didn't assume that, but I didn't

I just looked at the list

    ...fuck I should've got Pikachu

Pikachu has Oddish, Sandshrew, Growlithe, Grimer, Scythe, and Mankey, plus their evolutions

Eevee has Bellsprout, Vulpix, Meowth, Koffing, Ekans, and Pinsir

Pikachu's lineup is like, objectively better line-by-line
