I know I said this just recently but 15 is the only FF I've ever been able to connect with
Perhaps because the initial setup of "you and your friends are on a road trip" is one I can immediately grok, maybe because I really liked the way they blended magic into this weird alt modern world, who knows? But then once the late game hits and we return to all that crystal deity nonsense I just checked right out. I finished the game but that last stretch was so miserable for me that it soured my opinion of the whole game.
FF as a series so often has stakes that are, not too big necessarily, but they feel so weird and predicated on a mythology I find to be largely boring that I find it impossible to care who turns out to be a copy of a memory of a dead dragon
the lore and mythology of XIII are extremely dumb, and not in a good way, but the core point, that is, "these strangers all got thrown together and now they're on a clock to finish a task they don't even know" was cool and generally worked pretty well
shame about all the other parts of the game though
I've tried multiple times to get into the FF games and they've just never stuck with me, so I should probably stop trying, buuuuut I'm probably gonna buy at least one of those fucking FF rereleases on Switch.
If it helps, I only like 6, 9, and 12, but those three are some of my favorite games of all time
So just because you don't like a few doesn't mean you won't like any of them
You should really give 3 and 15 a try...
I literally tried 15 because of this, I really did
(that game's bad)
Maybe only multiples of 6 and 9 work for you, then.
I think you'll really like FF XVIII.
gonna be honest?
dont think square will be around that long
I don't see why not. XV and VII remake are their only major boondoggles recently. Everything else seems to be doing decent to great sales?
I think the only reason they're not bankrupt as hell is their stable of gatcha games that skinner box people into throwing away millions of dollars a month, so they can keep shoveling money into the black hole of their badly, badly managed AAA prestige projects. Which is apparently good enough to get by, unless Japan suddenly puts gambling restrictions on that genre, but that doesn't seem likely.
All their western studio acquisitions (producing Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman) have supposedly not been blockbustering hard enough for them, even when they're critically and commercially successful. They wanted those studios to make not merely big hits, but ultra-hits. FF14 was initially a boondoggle but they saved it at some large expense, which has hopefully paid for itself now that it's been a highly successful subscription-based game for many years. FF15 may have been the only major boondoggle, but it and Kingdom Hearts were also the only thing they were putting AAA money into in-house and it took them 8-10 years to make both projects. As for the FF7 remake, I doubt they've even started development on it. It sounds like they basically threw out everything the 3rd party studio they hired had made so Nomura could Assume Direct Control of the project once he was done with KH3, since FF7 is his baby I guess. All the little retro-style games like Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler and etc. are both relatively low-budget and relatively low-sales so I don't think they factor in much, but it is good that they are still producing smaller games that aren't mobile gatcha garbage.
Also on a personal note, I thought FF13 and its series of garbage sequels were fucking terrible, FF12 had some big problems in development that made the story come out all stupid, and I just don't like FF10 even if I am forced to admit by the comparison to FF13 and FF15 that it was actually still well-made. So from my point of view, excepting FF14 for being an MMORPG, they haven't made a Final Fantasy game I liked without reservation since 2000. So Square-Enix is obviously DOOOOOMED because they're not catering to me.
Is IV the best of the ATB Final Fantasies? I'd have to think about that one.
I definitely think it's the most coherent, on a thematic level, but part of that is how I tend to think of Kain as being the most central character even though he's not in huge swathes of it
Four has kind of the least going on so whether it's the best kind of depends on what you're looking for from those games.
You have basically no choices in that game--your party is decided for you, your skills and abilities are decided for you and there's barely even any optional content. It's an incredibly guided experience compared to pretty much everything that came after and personally that knocks it down several pegs for me, but I know some people get fed up with all the bullshit in the later games so that might actually be a perk for some.
My experience with Tactics original was playing it after Tactics Advance and not realizing that spells can take several turns to cast or that they can inflict friendly fire before I successfully nuked my own army.
I totally get that people love it but I HATE Tactics' story and the language is a big part of it
The language doesn't help, but it's just a bunch of boring old dudes talking to each other about fuckin' lineages. Final Fantasy Tactics is a game for people who think Numbers is the best book in the old testament
I would be pretty happy with another ogre battle tactics-esque final fantasy tactics game that didn't lean on ye olde Shakespeareaneth affectationeth but it doesn't really bother me either

I saw some youtube person describe IV as "fanfiction written about the job class system introduced in FF III"
which is an interesting way to look at it
I still think that game is pretty charming, and imo it's probably the FF game that works the best with its setting

It just felt extremely forced to me
like the writers were like THIS IS HOW FANCY PEOPLE TALK
I dunno, I think I'm in the minority of disliking it

did you play the PS1 version or the War of the Lions remake? The original localized script was a lot less heavy on the affectation but also it was a lot less heavy on the proofreading and translation accuracy, I thought it lead to some charming lines though like Delita telling you to "blame yourself or god."

Esther's pretty cool. It's got intrigue, dramatic irony, and a female hero!

The one that sticks out in my mind is Proverbs, because it was instrumental in helping break my reverence for the Bible as a source of wisdom as a young Pentecostal. When I was doing the token "read the entire Bible in a year" project that every teenage hardcore Christian gets roped into at some point, I was super excited to see the famed wisdom of the guy who asked God for that very virtue.
You know what?
Solomon really, really loves to bang on about how much adultery will fuck you up.
Like, he comes back to the subject four or five times and sneaks a couple oblique references to it in other places.
Solomon, son of David, the king who got super fucked up by his adultery, would like you to know that adultery will really fuck you up.
Some great wisdom.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

13 is far and away the best of the atb games, mostly cause you don't have to engage with the atb part but also I liked the story and most of the characters

I've played a little bit. They seem alright but I'm not sure how into them I'd get.
I tried playing the PSP version of Tactics and the fake elizabethan english made me cringe so much.

DQ XI was wonderful
doesn't it even have a class called Calculator
They just keep it to using words that see little use or old speech patterns instead of -th on everything. It also isn't every damned line.
