My top 5 would probably be:
Spider-Man
God of War
Jackbox Party Pack 5
Monster Hunter World
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
But it's hard for me to think all the way back to January 2018 and what I was playing back then. These choices are just what comes off the top of my head. And there are definitely dozens of games that I've enjoyed since then. Magic: the Gathering Arena, Marvel Strike Force, etc.
I'm about to play Tetris Effect over the weekend, though.
I've got a mill deck that is more or less working. need to play more best of 3 games to see if it actually works against red decks after sideboard because hoo boy when they kill you in 4 turns it is hard to defend yourself

I don't actually mean to disparage Street Fighter IV
I do actually mean to say that graduate education and especially clinical education are forms of social conditioning biased towards reinforcing existing power structures

It's a game I am quite enjoying but I don't think even when I finish it I'll say it quite cracks my top 5. Certainly an honorable mention though. This has been a strong year leading into another seemingly strong year!
Dishonorable mentions to Far Cry 5, Swords of Ditto, Moonlighter, and Dead Cells
These are all good choices
I really wanted to love Swords of Ditto but it was just too slow for me with a little too much bullshit
I wanted the whole game to run about 25% faster, and have less preamble between each iteration
I think the problem was more fundamenral. Ditto was a good idea but there was no fun to be bad. Exploration was pretty trivial and combat was non-challenging aside from bosses. This is a huge problem for Zelda ripoffs. Same thing as Moonlighter.
Also Smash Bros Ultimate comes out next month but I don't know if that'll crack many top 5 lists despite probably being a blast. Smash Bros is weird that way.
I..............want to play Destiny 2. But I need to buy some TVs since we sold ours to pay for the move and ironically have racked up way more credit card debt than we expected and should have just kept all the shit we sold
what's with games where players have like 3 bars you have to churn through?
I blame street fighter thats where I first saw that I believe. It just seems like madness to me
I'm not sure what game is being referred to
SF always has a single health bar AFAIK, but there are some team games (crossovers usually) where there are multiple characters with their own health bars, or a mechanic where you can take a single character with more health (possibly multiple bars)

That might very well be true. I didn't get far enough into it.
Slow movement is often a deal-killer for me. So are stretches of noninteractivity or unchallenging content between interactive/challenging content.
Like, one of my favorite games of all time is Shadow of the Colossus. A common complaint is that the horseback riding bits between colossi were boring. I didn't feel that way, but I 100% sympathize with the complaint because that's how I react to a lot of other games.

I have a really poor understanding of systems biology and like how organs work or anything larger in scale than a single macromolecular complex
I wanna go to med school
But for free and without ever having to treat sick people
Animal Physiology remains one of my favorite classes.
I forget if I learned in Animal Physiology or Embryology that the seam on a scrotum is where your vagina used to open up before fetal testosterone.
And, let's be honest: these are the same problems most Zelda games have. Most activities and decisions are trivial so it feels pointless.
I dunno if "most" zelda games qualify for that. Breath of the Wild had a bit of an issue there but also everyone was so charming you wanted to do their quests anyway, despite the rewards often not being worth it.
Most zelda games have had rewarding side quests and activities that give you stuff like heart pieces and upgrades.

I'm getting killed by stuff all the time in BotW.
Granted that happened a lot less once I got more hearts and special abilities, but I think that's kind of how it's supposed to work.
Not everything has to be Dark Souls, or even Dark Souls Lite.

BotW is the first open world game where I've truly enjoyed just tootling around and exploring.
I do use fast travel and stuff, but generally only if I'm on a DIRECT MISSION. There's a lot of really rewarding wandering I do in that game that I haven't found even in other games that are kind of famous for it, like Skyrim.

I swear I've seen a street fighter with multiple Health bars for a single dude. Maybe that was streetfighter vs capcom?
More recently I've seen multiple hp bars with the dbz game I believe.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

Yeah I don't remember that from any SF game.
(Unless we're counting VS games, like X-Men vs SF, but those are generally held to be loose tie-ins because they're drastically mechanically different.)
IIRC I think I first saw it in X-Men: Children of the Atom (the 90s predecessor to X-Men vs SF), but I might be misremembering.

The pacing of the rewards for exploration is glorious in that game.

Oh boy I'm excited for that.
And I still have Tomb Raider, AC: Odyssey and Fist of the North Star to keep me busy until then.
Spider-Man
God of War
Jackbox Party Pack 5
Monster Hunter World
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate

Most of the time you're filling the same bar multiple times in a single round!

It may not have been a game I wanted to buy but from what I've seen there's no doubt I would put it on a top 5 list for the year.

Good luck doing that without any meter, dumdum!
I can't see the car. The title is obscuring it. 3/10.

Actually I do think it’s kinda a poorly laid out / overly busy poster

New Zelda is hard but the best players can still beat a striped Lynel with a pot lid and a few sticks

The only solution is to exclusively shitpost
I played Skyrim for more than a hundred hours. Probably most other games come in under 100
Except lol which I’ve played for well over a thousand hours
