And, let's be honest: these are the same problems most Zelda games have. Most activities and decisions are trivial so it feels pointless.
I dunno if "most" zelda games qualify for that. Breath of the Wild had a bit of an issue there but also everyone was so charming you wanted to do their quests anyway, despite the rewards often not being worth it.
Most zelda games have had rewarding side quests and activities that give you stuff like heart pieces and upgrades.
I think you misunderstood my complaint: the reward is not the issue. The issue is the activities themselves. If the combat is trivial, if the story is linear, if the exploration is simplistic, then it's just hours of walking between decent puzzles. Sometimes the puzzles aren't very challenging either. If the game has no interesting decisions to make then it feels pointless to play.
I..............want to play Destiny 2. But I need to buy some TVs since we sold ours to pay for the move and ironically have racked up way more credit card debt than we expected and should have just kept all the shit we sold
Someone buy me two TVs please
Bold move going for two straight off the bat. Not even starting low.

People always go like "how can gamers spend *blank* amount of time playing vidja games" as they sit night after night in front of the tv watching big bang theory like shark
I watch about 40 min of tv a week

BotW is the first open world game where I've truly enjoyed just tootling around and exploring.
I do use fast travel and stuff, but generally only if I'm on a DIRECT MISSION. There's a lot of really rewarding wandering I do in that game that I haven't found even in other games that are kind of famous for it, like Skyrim.
The pacing of the rewards for exploration is glorious in that game.
See my biggest issue with the game was that the rewards were awful so it never felt good to actually explore.
I have a really poor understanding of systems biology and like how organs work or anything larger in scale than a single macromolecular complex
I wanna go to med school
But for free and without ever having to treat sick people
If you just want to learn that, I think you could get a degree in anatomy/physiology, which would cover all that without treating sick people. It wouldn't be free, of course. But you work for corporatelandia, so maybe you could work something out there.
Let’s be clear, I don’t want it enough to do it. But also part of the appeal would be specifically doing med school and seeing if I could win at either grades or grades:effort ratio
Literally the only reason I ever wanted to go to med school was:
I wanted to work in reforming the dysfunctional bullshit in the healthcare industry
and
I don't think you can have any power in the healthcare industry without being either a CEO or having an MD
Then I realized that I don't have the emotional constitution for med school, because of that dysfunctional bullshit. It's like what the psychologist Bruce Levine has been saying: clinical education functions as a way to weed out people who have antiauthoritarian tendencies, so the people who succeed at getting clinical degrees are not internal threats to the system itself.
Yes, it's always been clear to me that I am way too anti-authoritarian to do med school
Too much bullshit for the sake of bullshit and rigid hierarchies
I'd be the person who mouths off to the surgeon and refuses to work more than N hours and then does not get a residency
Plus I don't want to touch sick people

I think the game reaches that point eventually, but that's not what I experienced until relatively late when I had everything good already.
Also, I think the game is very well designed in the way that there are some really unique and interesting features tucked away in places that you have to really explore in order to find.

cred just audit my animal physiology course next semester okay
Hmm that may not be feasible with my current work schedule which should expect me on-site in DC during business hours most days
ALTHOUGH I am still not 100% definitely staffed and need to meet with the client next week

It's not even the client I was gunning for but it's a cool one and not DoD or (worse) DHS so that's solid.

Maybe I'm bad at video games because I've always felt the zelda games to be a decent challenge. Wind Waker was too easy but it was a joy to look at (and that sailing was...yeah. I hear the Wii U version fixed a lot of that)
I don't think a game needs interesting decisions to make though, it can be interesting to explore or just to experience these adventures even if they're on a linear path.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

Breath of the Wild overcomes this largely by making Link just a joy to control. His movement, his combat moves, his climbing, everything just feels right.
There was an anecdote about how they showed the game to Hiyao Miyazaki and he spent some charmingly long amount of time just climbing trees... when I read that, I internally nodded. It made sense to me.
Obviously there needs to be something to do with your avatar and BotW gives a decent amount of challenges to overcome too, but I don't think it would have clicked the same way with me if it weren't for Link's basic mechanics

botw was at least a breath of fresh air versus skyward sword
gosh was that game fucking terrible
not only was it terrible I have yet to get the controls functioning well enough where the sword moves like parrying and the spin-your-sword-puzzles weren't frustrating on a massive level
There are definitely other ways for games to be fun but I have never gotten that from Zelda games. BotW might be different. But they're very gamey games generally.
It's certainly the case that some games are much more fun when you're bad at them than when you're good at them, too. I think this happens a lot with board games, too, where they're fun when you're figuring them out bit then the optimized play isn't as exciting as the figuring.

All other open world games feel dumb as I try to Skyrim up cliffs
Honestly the climbing mechanic might be the single best decision the BotW team made.
You can get anywhere if you have enough stamina (unless it's raining).

Hello butts
How have your days been so far?
If you are on the East Coast and work a traditional schedule, your work week is very nearly done!
I know this because I am sipping coffee across the street from my partner's office, who has been trapped into one of those aforementioned "traditional work schedules"
I have a google form for people to submit tech requests to me
Somehow, people keep like, making copies of the form and sending that to me. Or inviting me to fill out my own form. Instead of, you know, answering the questions and submitting the help request.

FC5 was mostly fun to play, but the story was not only bad, the way it told the story actively impinged on your ability to enjoy the gameplay.
It was basically the epitome of the ProZD egg video, except replace eggs with story.

It also pushed up the emergent chaos to the point where the world felt too busy and ultimately boring.
To me, everything is just right, with very very few exceptions.
Browsing the G&T thread, people were really excited for it months before release, thinking it was going to be something the end product waffled on.

Poor lass
My body is ready.
the very first time I was forcibly captured I was so angry
the rest of the game gave me an ulcer
I just replayed through Borderlands 2 and half the cutscenes in that game are
"why am I standing here listening to your nonsense instead of shooting you dead right now?"
