Ignore the fenix ult near the end of game 2, though.
I should just edit that out of twitch.

@forty Nah this is a different one. That one is pretty egregious cause I had a sleep dart on the one person in range...pretty sure the one he's talking about he was just out of range.

Also while I had some really bad games yesterday (6 death Naz in 8 minutes anyone?), it was pretty fun playing against a Hanzo who would ult only when he was about to die (I guess he gets points for taking the stun arrow). Also having Knight stack into space with Zuljin.

Hanzo's ult is a really great mini-map awareness test. A significant proportion of cross-screen arrows that land are actually visible on the mini-map at some point. In many of them it's visible for nearly its entire path because the Hanzo just threw it down a lane.

If you can't dodge the arrow in time even though it was on the mini-map for 2 full seconds then you probably don't check the mini-map enough.

every team last night had at least 2 beefy warriors. Best part. They made this free Malthael week. It was a great night to learn Malth indeed.

Malthael's kit is pretty straight-forward, all things considered. He doesn't require a high degree of mechanical skill to play effectively, but there's still a world of difference between good and great players. He'll win most Bruiser vs Bruiser offlanes, but be aware that certain heroes with high self-sustain will require you to be level 4 (Die Alone) before you start pulling ahead decisively. Until that point, it's mostly raw skill vs skill and counting cooldowns. Malthael will outright win almost every offlane vs ranged heroes, simply by virtue of out-trading them. This assumes Malthael's able to trade against them, however; a good ranged offlane won't ever allow you to apply your Mark to them. Malthael has to get creative in these situations, and there's probably a chapter's worth of tips and tricks that you can use to apply your Mark to targets that are actively avoiding them, but the best advice I can give you is to try and do one of two things:

The first is to DoT up the ranged minions in a wave, then back off. If the enemy lane steps up toward them, Wraith Strike back to the ranged minions and auto-attack the enemy. This works especially well if you've taken Death's Reach at level 1 instead of On a Pale Horse, because nobody expects you to be able to W from that range. On a Pale Horse is generally the pick-up, however. The second option is to look for an opportunity to Mark your target when they step up to gather your Globe. You should be looking to punish Globe gathering on every character, by the way, not just on Malthael, because it's one of the few instances when you know for a certainty exactly where someone's going to go and when.

Remember that your Trait is effectively worth 7% of a Hero's maximum life with every application. Every time you touch someone, they're going to take 7% of their maximum HP over the next few seconds. And that's before you start adding in bonus damage from Soul Rip (which can get nuts after level 4). So it's pretty easy to trade with folks by just applying your Mark as often as possible.

Malthael's rotational speed is one of his primary assets. With On a Pale Horse, he's incredibly fast while mounted. Combine this with an exceptional clear speed, and Malthael's more than capable of out-rotating enemy solo laners, and he can convert the time he saves into a number of benefits, including mercenary captures (Malthael can take any standard camp in the game at level 1) and ganks. A popular tactic of mine is to build up rotational advantage on an enemy player, then simply wait for them in a bush between lanes to catch up. When they pass by, apply your Mark and go crazy. By the time you're level 7, this should result in a kill against basically anybody because you're doing 50% bonus damage (Die Alone) to that player and permanently slowing them (Cold Hand) in addition to repeatedly body-blocking them with Wraith Strikes.

Standard build is On a Pale Horse (1); Die Alone (4); Cold Hand (7); Last Rites (10); Whatever you need at (13) but Soul Siphon is fine if you don't feel comfortable playing around the other options; Soul Collector (16); and No One Can Stop Death (20). There are variations to the build that need to be considered vs certain team comps on certain maps and objectives, but this will get you through just fine until you're comfortable enough to understand and compensate for those situations when you encounter them.

I've noticed a significant drop-off in my own mechanical skill over the past year. I'm sure much of it is due to age (and a bit due to fatigue as well). Like, there are times where I see in my mind's eye what is happening and I know what I should be doing and yet I either mess up or am simply too slow to do it in time. And those moments come more and more often.

I feel like you and I have had this conversation before. I'm definitely not as quick as I have been in the past. I started noticing this back when I was doing Call of Duty content, and I would do a lot of 1v1s against another competitive player friend of mine. I was in my mid-twenties, and this dude was like 17-18. He would, no joke, just fucking light me up in any straight-up fight. Dirty was just greasy fast, and playing against him was a big part of my transition from more of a slayer-type of role on squad, where my job was to go mix it up and Streak up as high as I could, to more of an overwatch-type of role, where my job was to lock down sight-lines and funnel players into routes where my slayer teammates could pick them off. Basically, I had to play smarter because I couldn't play quicker.

This is a big part of my strategy in HotS, too. I mean, yes, I've got something like 6,000 matches played and over 4 years of experience in Heroes of the Storm, so I'm capable of playing at a pretty high level of mechanical skill when I need to, but that tends not to be my primary focus. I mostly beat people by counting cooldowns, and with proper positioning, and by leveraging the map resources more aggressively than my opponents. It's stuff that I consider "the basics", to be honest. A lot of my success in HotS boils down to just having a pretty good understanding, from experience, what players are likely to do, and when, and then exploiting any weaknesses I find. Basically, just playing smarter because I know I can't play quicker.

I have been doing the “Play smarter, not harder” thing since Brawl came out because you have to do it when your body breaks down (good ol’ Crohn’s)

It is a privilege that the healthy have to invest so heavily into a game and get such mechanical skill returns : P

And I find a lot of younger dudes that are so skilled at these games are so good because they started learning them at a younger age. If you played your first FPS when you were five years old you have a much better basis from which to grow on.

There's truth to that, and certainly the FPS games that I grew up on (Tribes II, Quake) were more twitch/skill-based than almost anything out there today. But even having that background myself, even with over a decade of experience in competitive/tournament gaming as an adult across a number of genres (FPS, fighting, MOBAs, etc), I still have to admit that at the end of the day I'm a 34-year old, married, father of 4, and that my reaction speed just isn't anywhere close to what it was when I was younger.

btw after testing in a match this evening, I can confirm that Malthael shits all over Imperius in lane. If possible, try to get Imperius to fight you inside of your wave so that his aura hits all of the minions instead of you. Like that's an easy way to mitigate a bunch of his damage, but it really isn't a big deal. Like we clashed in the opening wave up top in Braxis and by the time his wave was killed, he was retreating with 50% health and my full minion wave at his back. Falstad immediately flew top in response.

I legitimately have always thought that a Guardian would have been an awesome tie-in. Any of the three Destiny classes could have been converted into fun and interesting HotS characters: a multi-role Titan, for example, that can choose between Striker, Defender/Sentinel and Sunbreaker with talent choices the way that Varian can choose to be Arms, Fury, or Protection, would be actually pretty legit.

I had a game last night with a guy who drafted Varian on Volskya. OK, I asked what build and he said, "TB to pressure KT". Uh, sure man, but wouldn't CS blow-up just be better? But whatever, it's Bronze/Silver players, TB will probably be fine.

Game goes on and we're doing ok. Reach 10 around the same time as the 2nd objective comes up. Neither team getting much of an edge. They popped our mid with the first obj, we took their top with the second. So, still even.

Then something strange happens. For the rest of the match, with no reasoning at all that I could tell, the Varian was always on the other side of the map from the team. At first, he was soloing some camps, so I didn't think about it too much. It was like, "Fine go play, but be back in time for the objective." But he never did.

After grabbing a camp, he just hung around in a bush. I figured he had to go AFK for a real-world problem. OK, frustrating, but OK. Then he hearths back and hangs out there. Grr...fine. He lose the next objective and bot Fort. As a team, we keep rotating and taking smart fights, even getting a pick or two. Still keeping the game close. There's a big team fight, we get wiped and everyone is pissed.

Varian? Well he decided to go to the C objective and rotate around on the conveyor belts. He spent the rest of the match doing this. Going to weird places and hanging out. We kept it surprisingly close, but lost in the end.

    FUCK THAT GUY!

Imperius seems to be shaking up as a tanky Kerrigan with less consistent CC but more damage. So ideally he's still in the 4-man.

I think he could work as an actual tank in pro games (much like Blaze, Tyrael, et. al.) but now that the pro scene doesn't exist he will likely be relegated to a weird hybrid offtank/bruiser who wants to be in the 4-man (like Thrall).

A good Imperius can absolutely solo destroy heroes who don't respect him, though. Unlike Kerrigan, who almost always still needs help.

For those that don't know, the wife is a software engineer. She's been looking for a fun, side-project and has settled on a draft assist tool for HotS. While there are some on websites, this would be a companion app that opens only when HotS is open, not unlike deck trackers in Hearthstone or Magic the Gathering: Arena.

The game would give you draft choices based on the meta, the map, your comp, the enemy comp, and your comfort levels with certain characters. It could be expanded to include the rest of your team if they have they upload their replays to hotslogs.

Sounds like it would be pretty cool. If any of you are interested in giving it a shot, let me know.

I think there are a few tools out there that do something similar. One of them is a mobile app? She may have some fun doing "competitive research". :P

That's sounds really neat. If I drafted, then I would be interested in trying it. But I'd probably be a bad candidate since my HotS play time consists of me turning my brain of and relaxing in bot matches.

Remember to put a really big pop up window reminding the player the clear the filter field before typing something new during draft.
