should I be holding on to my loot chests till around Christmas or something, or do I have to earn them during a specific period?
There is specific event-only stuff that only drops from those specific event boxes. For example, Nexomania skins only dropped from Nexomania boxes.
Otherwise, anything that isn't event-specific is fair game. So you can hold onto your boxes if there isn't anything you want now and wait for something you do want to show up later. Cloaken Announcer and Janitor Leoric would be good examples of cool non-event stuff in the most recent content patch that you might have wanted to hold onto boxes for.
If you don't have a Stimpack nor intend to purchase one, there's a case to be made for holding your chests until the Winter event starts. You might be able to fish up Stims to help level up heroes during the event for more event chests.
One thing that people do is not hold from opening loot chests, but try to get as many heroes as they can on the verge of leveling. Then, you can earn the special chests faster when the time comes.

Well I am ready for the winter event as my brother will call me a box farmer because I have a lot of characters within one or two games from leveling
Just I have to do 9 more team games for the mount but that first one was a toxic mess

You ever have a game on Towers, where it all comes down to a fight on the boss.
And the enemy is ana/cho'gall + sylvanas + Zarya
And you land a tether on all of them.
And you do 2 knife resets and then oneshot all but cho'gall because your tether is so fucking stronk?
Ran into a 4-stack of Cho'Gall with Ana today, and I must say that is some of the most degenerate shit I've seen. I haven't even seen a Nano'd CG, much less one destroy a team in a couple seconds before. We killed them 3 times within six minutes, so they weren't even playing well. After they hit 10, they pretty much auto-won fights, and there wasn't much we could do to counteract them on Hanamura. It was one of the most frustrating matches I've ever had in this game. It wasn't even remotely fair.
....next time I queue up, I see the bans are playing out the exact same. They also had an Artanis in the first couple picks. So I ban out Cho'Gall. They wind up pausing for 35 seconds on the last couple picks and some random shit shows up. I see it's the same 4-stack on the loading screen and go on to grab MVP with my girl Johanna after destroying them 29-2 with no forts lost. Felt so vindicated.
I legit fucking laughed out loud at this post because I can fucking SEE how it's playing out in my head
them: "okokok ban dis ban dem pick chogall win game yesyesyesysesyse"
Just looks more like a Japanese action figure to me than a transformer.
Yeah I think it's supposed to be like part of the MechaStorm thing. But like, yknow, Super Sentai/Power Ranger-dealy.

Maiev clears a wave extremely quickly. This is because her E hits the wave twice and all her abilities cleave.

I was looking at skins last night, and got irritated because Blizzard just can't have a consistent naming scheme for stuff.
You can make a Mad "Max" (axe, yeah yeah) team... But only like two of the skins actually include Mad Axe in the name. There are like 5 or 6 other skins that would fit, but are called "diesel," or "wastes" or some shit. Same with the star lord/lich stuff. Same with mechs (those are named a bit better).
Like c'mon. If you're going to have a theme that can go across multiple heroes, name them ALL something easily searchable! Also, maybe make sure that each theme has a tank/healer? Arrgh.
This is all moot because none of my friends play Heroes, so I'll never get to Theme Team anyway.
I didn't think Into the Fray counted as a stun on allies (seems obvious since it doesn't interrupt anything a displacement wouldn't). I don't get where that impression came from.
i really do feel like this is The Build now though. need to wait til hotslogs unborks to see individual talent winrates but goddamn does AA hanzo (hAAnzo? ) feel fuckin' strong
it's honestly just kinda nice to have very consistent damage that doesn't rely on landing a fickle skillshot or an even more fickle nigh-random skillshot.

One trick I picked up is thinking of Hanzo as the assassin equivalent to Diablo. Look for people standing next to walls so that you can hit them with a Scatter Arrow ricochet.

Yo fam it's the goddamn AA HANZO DIBBY POST. You'll be Hanjoing with the best of em after reading this fuckin' shit LET'S GOOOO
At level 1 you take Redemption, cause I guess Hanzo is canonically a Bad Dude and so he needs to redeem his evil ways... By hitting people with arrows? I don't get it either. ANYWAY, Redemption is a quest that basically completes itself. It's super, super easy to complete. Every 2 AAs against the same Hero grants 1 stack of Redemption. Hit 12 and you get 50% attack speed, attaining an ASPD of 1.0! This is pretty massive considering his baseline ASPD is 0.66. You can complete this one SUPER fast. You'll see a little icon under enemy Hero nameplates, that's your indicator that you've hit them once and need to hit them again. It lasts 10 seconds, it's a HUGE window, GET IN THERE MY SON. No really though, just walk up AA them. You've got a range of 6.5 which is fucking massive. Note that individual stacks do nothing, and you lose 3 full stacks when you die. This isn't a huge deal, but it does mean you need to auto 6 times at 0.66 ASPD before you get back to 1.0 again.
At level 4 we always always always grab Explosive Arrows. This gives you waveclear, plain and simple. You can full clear a wave in 4 seconds flat with two Q's. Don't take Ignore All Distractions, it's honestly not very good and has little impact, despite being "meant" for AA build.
aT LEVEL 7 YOU GRAB SHARPENED ARROWHEADS AND CAN START LIGHTING BITCHES UPPPPPP. No really, this talent alone is what makes AA Hanzo fucking shred. This is his best talent by far. You will absolutely obliterate Tanks, you'll dunk on Melee, and you'll still pour fucking gasoline on everyone else. -2 Armor per stack might not seem like much, but it adds up VERY quickly between 1.0 ASPD autos and popping off Qs. Anyone that stays in will get that shit stacked. Just keep right clicking dudes and you'll fuckin' shred with the best of em.
Level 10 is Dragon's Arrow. Period the end. Don't ever take Dragonstrike, it's poopybutts. It's memes. Word of advice: Take Dragon's Arrow off of Quickcast, it will make life so much easier for you. Second word of advice: Don't ever try for those ridiculous long range global casts, you'll never land them. I never land them. Going for a decent mid-range cast is all you need.
Level 13 is.... Whatever you want :-). No really, they're all good. If in doubt, take Mounted Archery though, you honestly can't go wrong with that one and you get value from it every single time. Otherwise though, I do actually quite like Fleet of Foot a good deal because it gives you pseudo-permanent 30% movespeed in fights, which is insane. Not a big fan of Ninja Assassin since I always hold my D for escaping, meaning the CDR generally always goes to waste? But ymmv.
Level 16 we graaaaaab Flawless Technique. My dude let me ask you a question. Lemme just slide this one over your way. Whatchu think about doing 1.3k+ damage every time you press Q? How do you feel about that one. How's that sound to you. Good? Good. Cause that's Flawless Technique. It's pretty much a permanent 30% damage increase to Qs and the first AA that follows. It's more or less like Follow Through in a way but on a much shorter CD. It gives you some motherfuckin' BURST. Q goes from 613 to 796, your AA goes from 417 to 542. And this isn't even counting the damage boost you get from Sharpened Arrowheads. BASICALLY though, landing AAs empowers the next Q (which you'll always be landing AAs) and landing Q empowers the next single AA. Make sure you're good at landing Qs!! You can also try Giant Slayer if you like. I tried it out a few times, it's pretty decent with the recent buff.
Level 20 is PLAY OF THE GAME. This is my favorite fuckin' talent of Hanzo's. It's such a powerful versatile Ult upgrade. It gives you a global teleport on a 70 sec cd. It gives you extra damage after landing your Ult. AND it gives you fucking Unstoppable during the reactivation. KEEP THAT LAST PART IN MIND ALWAYS. You can get out of so many tricky situations just by reactivating for the Unstoppable. Don't be afraid to blow Dragon's Arrow just to teleport back to your team, either.
THAT'S THE BUILD YOU WANT SUM GENERAL TIPS? HELL YEAH YOU DO LET'S GO
- I found that taking Q and W off of Quickcast reaaaaally really helped me a ton. Q because you can tap it once, it autocharges up, and then you can left click to fire it off (this takes some getting used to, but I feel it controls better than with Quickcast on). W because you need to see where the fuck those shitting arrows are gonna go. God I hate W. Such a shit button. ANYWAY.
- The thing with W is, don't wait for that perfect lineup. Generally your goal is to just find an angle that's good enough and fire it off quickly. At first you might spend a lot of time trying to get the line-up cause you're unfamiliar with how the button works and the angles. But as you play him more the time between button press and ability going off will decrease, to the point where it'll be almost instant (unless you're trying to shoot it off some really wacky terrain).
- W's a weird button and I hate it. It's pretty much just for poke. You have to think kinda backwards when using it. Don't aim it at people, aim it away from them at terrain. This is a little counter-intuitive until you start learning it, then it becomes second nature. Don't worry if it misses. It's just some extra poke, it's not important. If you took Giant Slayer at 16, it'll do some % damage too, so keep that in mind.
- In chokepoints or tight corridors literally just aim a wall and let W fucking rip, who cares. You'll hit someone. It'll shred them. Whateverrrrr.
- Hanzo's AA speed is astronomically slow at first. He's got an AA swing timer in the lower left corner, pay attention to that. It'll help. Just make sure to keep getting Redemption stacks as fast as possible. Leverage your gigantic 6.5 range. Don't be afraid to walk up to people.
- Q can be a bit hard to aim. It's hitbox is needle thin, but it has a fairly long cast range to it and you're able to charge it up ahead of time. As always, aim for the feet, not the body.
- Careful about charging up Q. While you can do this, you miss out on a LOT of potential AAs while charging, so only hold the charge if you're not in range. Otherwise try to pop off the Q as fast as possible. Q's also great as a finisher, honestly. Once you get Flawless Technique the idea is to pop it off as fast as you can, on CD.
- If someone's sitting near or in a minion wave or objective monsters, nail the minion/monster instead. The AoE from Explosive Arrows will hit them and that's generally a lot better than trying to somehow navigate the Q to only hit the enemy Hero. You double dip on waveclear/obj clear that way too.
- Always always always hover near walls. D is your lifeline, your exit plan, your get out of jail free card. It's got a 30 second cooldown though, so BE CAREFUL.
- Dragon's Arrow can be somewhat difficult to get a handle on insofar as usage. Like, when am I supposed to fire this off? That kinda thing. Generally, after a tank initiation is always good. If the enemy team is grouped up, that's good. Sometimes it IS your initiation. It's something you'll figure out as you play him. ALWAYS hold it for an interrupt if you need to interrupt an Ult or something though.

Supposedly a big HotS announcement is coming on Monday.
me: hmmm i wonder how Artanis feels to play in QM now that there's enforced comps???
also me:
get fucking suppression pulse'd kiddos lmao
no but uh, stomp aside, man it feels SO NICE to just always have a healer and a real tank as artanis. it truly, truly lets him do his job now and he shines like crazy under these new enforced comps.
I’ve played a few games where my team has 2 healers and the other team has none. So it isn’t great yet.
Granted, I’m late night PST and that’s often with 2 2-mans on the other team.
I’m also tired of the 7-10 minute QM times and all I play is warriors and support.
There's still some weird oddities going on with the matchmaker, tbh. People have been complaining about comps being wrong (like in your example), but the most common complaint has been exceedingly long wait times that make no sense.
I was duo-queuing with a friend and we hit 600 fucking seconds in queue. 600 fucking seconds! And it's not like we were both Assassins (Healer/Bruiser, actually). And then I cancelled the queue, waited 5 seconds, requeued.... popped way faster. Once was instant, the other times it popped within the actual estimated range.
Some fucky shit is going on, I wouldn't be surprised if enforced QM comps also brought a ton of weird system bugs with it.

Hm.
Yeah. Slightly different, but I was in a five-stack the other day, and it was super long queue times. And then, when it finally popped, it put us against randos that just started playing the game, and their comp was horrible. There's no way that was the best the system could do. It was like after a point it gave up on finding a compatible match, so literally just through everything to the wind and grabbed the first 5 random people it saw. Probably a horrible experience for the other team, through no fault of their own they were entirely outmatched and didn't have a proper QM comp.

THAT'S ALL I GOT GOOD LUCK

also me:
get fucking suppression pulse'd kiddos lmao
no but uh, stomp aside, man it feels SO NICE to just always have a healer and a real tank as artanis. it truly, truly lets him do his job now and he shines like crazy under these new enforced comps.

If they are just starting out, even if they had aproper comp i doubt they would do well vs someone that's been playing for years
I mean, yeah. They were gonna lose either way :P. Just felt like kicking someone while they were down :P
