There are also a few bands that kind of disappointed. But some of that is probably because they are coming off really fucking good albums. Like Behemoth's I loved you at your darkest was just not as interesting to listen to as Satanist, and Tribulation's Children of the Night was just so damn good and surprising that their latest kind of bounced off me.
But this year also gave us excellent albums by Beyond Creation, The Ocean, Ihsahn, Revocation, Ken Mode, Skeletonwitch, Wayfarer, Rivers of Nihil, Rolo Tomassi, Harakiri for the Sky, Slugdge....man it just goes on and on.
Stranger Fruit is definitely on my top albums of 2018 list.

Pfft. I can just go kill a guy and save myself $3500 USD.
And don't forget the headlight fluid.

Fuck hold up shouldn't finalize my top picks yet then
Edit: Just finished with Gravedigger's Chant and instapurchased Stranger Fruit. I have high hopes.
I wish I could track down the first Lucifer CD at a decent price, the cheapest I've seen is direct from Rise Above and that's like $20 easy. I guess that's not too bad.
This is metal soaked in an oak barrel for 50 years, only served in a small southern town bar with creaky floorboards and license plates on the wall, full of few patrons, all of whom have long given up on life and are simply treading water until the cold hug of the grave.
I fucking love it.

It was the same night as the Caleb Scofield tribute show at the Wiltern, so I think a lot of people hit that up instead.
(But I don't really like Zeal & Ardor beyond the idea itself.)
I saw mention of the Uada album, which won't be on my list, but I'll be damned if this song doesn't punish. I have had this riff stuck in my head from time to time throughout the year:

I missed both! According to my calendar, that was a week after Frost & Fire IV and a week before I saw Paradise Lost and Solstafir. Oh well.

Few things get my creative juices flowing quite like the sound of American desperation.
Here's the full artwork.
Oh. Oh my.
He's gone full Takei!
It's much more raw than their past sessions.
(I'm rolling with this one).

the theme of the video being hairy finnish men doing hairy finnish man things
always enjoyed their very particular approach to harmony

SO GOOD
That would kind of eliminate the entire thing, tho.
The songs Z&A do are based on old American blues, soul, and spirituals, which did indeed repeat themselves.
I can understand it, it's definitely not a for-everyone kinda thing. For me it almost becomes meditative. It's definitely not the kind of music that draws attention to song craft but rather it kind of burrows in the back of your mind and does it's thing.
I had to save the best for last!
Taking December off, except for my year's end list.
Sorry to hear about Erik from Deeds of Flesh and Unique Leader records.

Have you heard their first two albums? They blow the new one away.
