Stan Lee (1922-2018)

Stan Lee, the legendary writer, editor and publisher of Marvel Comics whose fantabulous but flawed creations made him a real-life superhero to comic-book lovers everywhere, has died. He was 95.

Lee, who began in the business in 1939 and created or co-created Black Panther, Spider-Man, X-Men, The Mighty Thor, Iron Man, The Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, Ant-Man and other characters, died early Monday morning in Los Angeles, a source told The Hollywood Reporter.

Lee's final few years were tumultuous. After Joan, his wife of 69 years, died in July 2017, he sued executives at POW! Entertainment — a company he founded in 2001 to develop film, TV and video game properties — for $1 billion for fraud, then abruptly dropped the suit weeks later.

Hell of a run Stan. Excelsior!

Dude helped create a ton of things I love dearly and that is worth celebrating, and had a huge role in pushing comics beyond their Pulp adventure origins

But his very flagrant attempts to rewrite history so he became The Creator of Marvel Comics while leaving his collaborative partners in the dust is gross and helped establish a toxic system of crediting creators for their work in the comics industry to this day

I don't think any voice (thats not a musician or family member) will ever stay in my head as long as his has, and will.

He had a hell of a run

Whatever happened with his dirtbag daughter trying to take advantage of him?

I have no idea how far out he's filmed his cameos, but even if more exist, they should end with Avengers 4.

And with that said, I will not be able to make it through that cameo with a dry eyes.

    This, exactly

Obviously, he played a huge role in a lot of things I hold dearly, but he also kinda screwed over a lot of people, and got a lot of accolades that a lot of people never got to experience, so, it's complicated for me to say the least

It is worth noting that Stan Lee had an extremely mercenary streak, and did not like to share the spotlight much, and likely screwed some great creators out of their fair share of the extraordinary wealth their creations would go on to generate (though Stan's authority on the business end of Marvel seemed minimal)

It's also worth noting that he was also a creator -- he wasn't a conman like Bob Kane, he did actually contribute creatively in a very significant way, and those contributions should not be ignored

Stan and Jack Kirby also made some amount of peace with each other before Kirby's death, which I think about often. Because for all the shit that went down between them, there was no bigger fan of Jack Kirby than Stan Lee

95 is a fine age for a fine fellow. It's a bummer, but I don't feel like it's very sad.

Oof, this one hits pretty hard.

His contributions to my life are difficult to quantify, but they are substantial. I don’t have much more to add beyond what others have already said about his past.

    Totally

I still think about those editorial sections in the back of old Marvel comics. "The Merry Marvel Bullpen" and all that, and the goofy, jovial, celebratory, carnie-ass tone that Stan always took with them. It blew my mind when I learned it was just an office, and not the wild place it always occupied in my imagination that Stan had created

His narrative voice along with his actual one was so distinct, I'll never forget it

Yeah, this doesn't hit as hard as Pratchert's death, but still. A giant has fallen.

I hope he got a chance to see Avengers 4 first.

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

I kinda want to see a scene in a future Marvel movie where there's a cameo of young actors as Stan and Jack and Steve, the way they used to guest star in the Silver Age comics

Yeah I am not saying he shouldn't be remembered

He did a ton of amazing things and helped create worlds that are some of my favorite things in fiction

But he did some pretty sleazy shit that hurt his co creators for years and while I am glad that they found peace, it is a part of his legacy that isn't really talked about a lot outside of places like here and is worth making sure people know about

Huh? Last I read the manager was thrown out but the daughter was still involved. There was an interview in The Daily Beast. Also, the person who announced his passing was his daughter.
