Ok, I am watching the new Lindsey Ellis video and I just wanted to make one big correction to something she repeats a couple times.
Satire is not covered under fair use.
Parody is.
The difference between the two is extremely unclear if you look at the cases involving parody and satire.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Fun bonus: the ads before and after this video were for the US Concealed Carry Association, and were 100% spreading panic about being arrested for being a white guy with a gun.
Youtube's ad policies are profoundly fucked.
During elections, I would routinely get served by YouTube ads from FAIR, an anti-immigration group tracked by the SPLC as a hate group.
The problem I have with tumblr and porn it showed it a lot of weird fetishes
Like being stuck or things I don't know how people found it sexual
It showed me well sad porn as being casually forced to do something when it's been shoved at you is not really sexy I feel
And the list goes on and on
people are allowed to like things you don't! Not everything that's created has to appeal to you personally.
I am not shaming it! I am not into that stuff I just found some of it odd nor did i know it exists

Yeah, so after watching Ellis' video I just wanted to say she knows enough about the subject to give some interesting info to a layperson, but don't take it as the word of God either. She certainly knows way more than the video of a guy I saw recently who said "I don't see fair use for parody in section 107, so it must not be a thing" (ignoring like, hundreds of supreme court cases on the topic).

I have seen multiple anti-trans and anti-gay videos as ads before stuff talking about transitioning and the like.
The episode on Tetris was incredible. Like.. it is so cool to see this getting put together and preserved. I get excited whenever this channel produces an ep over 30 minutes.

Man, some of the ads you guys in (presumably) America report seeing on Youtube videos sound fucking awful. I never see anything like that. Is it just that stuff is only in the US? I mean, I know here in the UK we have some pretty strong laws about political ads and the like, but I'm also pretty sure that they only apply to TV/radio and not the internet.

The US is stupid about free speech absolutism, along with looking for "balance".

There are a lot of laws governing advertisements, dude.
And poltical ads have laws governing them.

Political ads can also be used to subvert laws though. Tobacco companies can't advertise on television but they can sure as shit fund a Super PAC to run ads for a pro-Tobacco candidate who will push for them to get deregulation and tax breaks.

On the subject of terribleness on YouTube, my belated thanks to whoever it was on here who pointed out a while back that when you remove a video from your recommendations you should select 'tell us why' for an option that says 'I'm not interested in content from this channel'. I started doing that and holy shit does it make a difference.
Hey everyone, we made a song to help you close out the year on a positive note. The holidays are a time when then highs are high and the lows are low, so we hope this is something you can count on to help you bounce around like an idiot and keep those highs going. Love you all xo
absolute vigilance in maintaining/pruning my recommendations has resulted in me avoiding like 99% of all the terrible youtube shit I see a lot of people talk about.

It's less that and more that currently practicaly legal jurisdiction over online advertisement in the US... is poor.

Yes. That's a loophole. And comes from the very fucked up and weird position to treat corporations as living, breathing people.

Crash Course takes a victory lap. Which is fully deserved, IMO. This thread/forum led me to them. I've fallen off watching lately, but that's mostly due to not having time.

I liked Crash Course a lot and US history/world history was very important to me during a dark time
but their series on US government really turned me off*, as did John's refusal to just outright say "the CIA instigated a coup in Iran."
*specifically, it was the third time they said the postal service didn't pay for itself while neglecting to mention that it did pay for itself for the entirety of its history until republicans deliberately attempted to bankrupt it in 2006
As much as a like John and Hank, they are, like, the definition of white liberalism.
They have their hearts in the right place, but seem allergic to saying anything along the lines of "maybe the government and/or capitalism is bad sometimes?"

the postal service is one of the greatest successes of american government which is of course why republicans feel compelled to attempt to destroy it on the regular.
that and they want to sell the profitable routes and the buildings which are valuable real estate in major cities while leaving everyone else to go get fucked, while providing worse service for more money.
people's opinion on the postal service is a useful litmus test.
even if the postal service was required to take a loss it's still vital to have because capitalistic models will not provide postal services to all communities in the US.
most communities? sure. all communities? no.

The guy who they brought in for the US Government segment definitely didn't help things. I just don't like his personality, or something. I didn't like him on Mental Floss either.
On the other hand, give me more Phil Plait. I fall asleep to Crash Course Astronomy, and I think we need to explore multiverses so he can talk about more.

This. I don’t even care if the USPS doesn’t pay for itself (even though it would without the pension bullshit). Even if it inherently operated in the red, it’s 100% worth paying for. Honestly I sometimes hate to even use the “but except for the pension funding rule, it would totally pay for itself” argument because I think that muddies the fact that the USPS is vital and should be funded and supported regardless.
I fully believe that The Hu have some kind of youtube promo scheme going on. Their first video was in my recommends right off the bat.
I'm not complaining mind, they make rad music, but it does stink a little.
Quite possible. I was personally not surprised since I have quite lot of mongolian music in my youtube history.
