If you write "crackling drake" in sharpie on your copy of unmoored ego, you've 4-for-1'ed an entire set of win conditions from almost all red and jeskai decks. Unless I misunderstand the jeskai deck list.

That works more for Izzet decks. Jeskai you need to also hit Teferi and potentially Expansion/Explosion.

    probably Unmoored Ego?

Unmoored Ego is super questionable. It's not card advantage, it just gets rid of one specific card. Generally, control will board in another win condition or have multiple to begin with; getting rid of Teferi might be good, but it's not a game winner if your opponent still drops Niv Mizzet or Ral and you can't keep up, or can still flip an Azor's Gateway, or just drops Lyra.

Ego is good if the deck is unable to effectively change wincons or relies on a specific card (e.g. hitting turbofog's Teferi or Nexus), or if the deck is an all in combo you can disrupt (e.g. pre-Sai Aetherflux Storm), but not great if you "just" pay 3 mana to make the opponent have a slightly less nut draw in a resilient deck

I used to have unmoored ego, but then I realized there are way better options.

The big problem with it is that it gives the opponent card advantage.

No you haven't. You traded one card for zero. Sure, they don't have the creature, but they lost no resources.

The Milwaukee winning jeskai deck doesn't use crackling drake at all!

Something people fundamentally misunderstand is that, in general, cards in your library aren't "real" cards. That is, you shouldn't view them as something to be protected. This is hard to learn, because it feels bad when you scry a PW to the bottom to find lands, or mill your draft bomb to an incidental homarid. But its just as possible you mill out three lands and hit the bomb; your library is random and the right line doesn't change based on post-hoc knowledge.

What this means with unmoored ego, or similar cards, is that you're trading a real card for the potential that your opponents draws are worse, which is rarely valuable unless a card is totally critical to their play. Like, I was running a Wizards deck pre-rotation and my opponent named Adeliz on turn 3, so sure, I can't have truly absurd burst, but I still got to swing two soul scars, a ghitu lavarunner, and two wizard's lightnings into his face on my turn 3 so it didn't really matter at all

Hmm that's fair, I actually forgot about the clause that replaces the cards in their hand.

So would Ixalan Binding be better in that situation?

Yes. It removes an actual threat and creates dead cards in hand, which is much better than Unmoored ego.

That's a good card because it affects the board and turns cards they might draw into dead cards in their hand. If you remove the card from the deck and they have other wincons, they might just draw those. If the card is ixalan'd, they can draw another copy and be unable to do anything.

Of course they might be able to interact with ixalan, or ixalan your own ixalan, but in general it's a solid way to mess with decks that have lower numbers of wincons like that.

Like, the two mana spell that lets you discard a non land from your opponents hand and surveil one is better than unmoored ego.

It is cheaper. It has a use even on empty hands. And it removes a threat without giving card advantage. And the two mana to know your opponents hand is often super useful.

I have legitimately cast it just to use the surveil in the late game too.

I've gone ahead and moved Kay and Armoroc into the same round one match and hit start on the tournament since we have a nice round 8 now.

Winners should be able to report results somewhere on here I think:

The only people that put their deets in the google sheet were myself, 3clipse and you, Surf.

I won't be able to play Armoroc today as he won't be around until after 1am my time - I think that was literally the only matchup I wouldn't have been able to play this evening. :p

Playing the wacky mode and I ran into the first nexus of fate deck I've seen. They got to take three turns in a row, then conceded.

Helps that I had polyraptor and two forerunners out. Their one attack just turned four raptors into 20.

Oh and guys, I am pretty sure that the challenger is always on the draw in Arena so.

Probably do a heads/tails thing to figure that out and have the loser be challenged in successive matches?

It does but it's been so long that I forgot how to ask it.

Technically you would just be asking geth to roll 1-2 and like, I'd choose who goes first if it was 1, you if it was 2.

@cncaudata we touched base and are scheduled to play later tonight. I have to wait till my son goes to bed. My wife is out of town tomorrow and the kiddo is with grandma after 1200 pm central so I will be pretty much wide open.

I don't stay up that late though.
