Have we heard about any kind of B or A mobo series for the Zen 2 platform?

B550 or whatever they call it is rumoured for after Christmas so. It's a while away.

I suspect it might get rushed up as people refuse to spend as much on a board as they did on their CPU.

Yeah I really dont give a shit about overclocking or pushing anything past stock anymore, so an X board doesn't really represent a good value.

I don't know what they are gonna do for the B550 boards. If you scrap the PCI 4.0, you're basically just making the X470's again, and there's not really a whole lot else they can scrap from the low end of the boards they have already in a lot of cases.

Like, all of the Asus low end boards will fully support up to the 3950x on power delivery at stock. Where do you go from there? Just trim down to basically no USB, no SATA, no M.2?

I think we find out that you don't actually need x570 for pcie 4.

X470 offers better vrms (usually) and crossfire/sli support over b450 but basically nothing else. This will be repeated.

Edit: autocorrect put Z390 in there for some reason

So yeah, pcie 4 has no chance of being x570 only :)

I just need a board to run shit decently, yeah.

My i5 is struggling keeping a few background processes up (Discord, iCUE, a media player, and a web browser were driving it to the 40% usage range even when idle) and it needs to f'n go

Man, by the time all this shit gets sorted out it will have been a full year since I planned my upgrade.

I should just go buy an Intel :P

I think the 3600 is the best value in CPU's by far and that's probably the route I'll be taking for my son's new machine.
Pour all that extra money into a GPU imo.

    edit:
I am glad I am going on vacation for 2 weeks (ending with Linus Tech Expo) because I am so close to just buying the 5700xt anniversary and then switch to a custom loop watercooling for everything.

Unfortunate driver issues with AMD :/

There's a lot going on and I'm sure they'll get it sorted but it just feeds a narrative that already exists.

I was dealing with this shit with my 5850.

What are people's thoughts on good PSUs?

I personally think it's best to invest in a decent PSU as a bad one take take the whole system with it if it dies. But they can be costly when you're trying to not only stick to a budget, but save as much as possible.

A friend of mine is looking to get a PC for gaming for at most $2800AUD, including two monitors, windows and office as this is what he's used to and is what we use at work. His internet is not great, so please no recommending online alternatives for office.

His main reason for looking at a gaming PC is he's sick of Xbox One consoles dying on him and doesn't want to deal with that console again.

I have a rough idea of what he could get from a local store, but my key areas of concern are PSU, Dual Monitors, GPU and Case.

    Anyway here's a list I made.

He only wants to buy from one store, which is why I selected Scorptec as there's a store near where he lives.

    PCPartPicker Part List

    CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($315.00)
    Motherboard: MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($189.00)
    Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($149.00 @ Scorptec)

Video Card: Sapphire - Radeon RX 5700 8 GB Video Card ($589.00)
Case: Cooler Master - MasterBox MB520 RGB ATX Mid Tower Case ($109.00 @ Scorptec)
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G1+ 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($139.00)
Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home Full 32/64-bit ($175.00)
    Software: Microsoft - Office Home & Business 2019 - 1 Device Software ($279.00)

I'd like to make it cheaper if possible.

I feel like 1TB is going to be vital, and the price of this m.2 SSD seems really good as well.

I'm kind of thinking the EVGA 650W SuperNOVA G+ (139AUD). This would give him some breathing room for the future and is decent quality. It just seems a bit pricey but considering the cost of the build I'd hate for a cheap PSU to kill the system.

Cooler Master - MCB-B520-KGNN-RGB (109AUD). Eeehhh. It seems ok at first glance but I haven't found many reviews. But for an extra 40AUD he could get one of the Thermaltake Commander cases like the C35. There's a cheaper no frills version of the Cooler Master case for 85AUD, which would knock off a about $24, but only has one fan at the back. Really annoyed all the cheaper cases at this store either have one fan, restricted airflow from the front, are ugly as hell, or have a super annoying design (Matrex 55's PCIE slots have snap-off slot covers. Look out, Satan, Deepcool is after your job).

Two LG 24GL600F-B (279AUD each). At work we use dual monitors and he likes the idea of using a second to browse the net, etc. The reviews seem fine, but since he's coming from console gaming I wonder if these are the right fit for him. Like, I'm personally gaming on a I think a 60hz monitor and I've been "fine" with it for now, but he wants "good picture quality like when xbox gaming on a 4k TV". I'm assuming that means he wants decent colours and sharpness? I'm not a monitor wizard.

Reference Radeon RX 5700 is actually super cheap in Australia compared to the AIB Nvidia 2060/super. I could also knock down the GPU to something like the 1660 TI.

I'm thinking maybe knocking the CPU down to a 2600 as apparently a lot of people are having trouble updating the bios on B450 boards for Ryzen 3000. Either that or having him spend about 170AUD to get it all put together and installed in store. But that'd be kind of shitty.

Anyway, feedback regarding the hardware is appreciated.

The other option is maybe having him get a prebuilt system like this. He'd just need to get the monitors and office software separate

    https://www.pccasegear.com/products/46947/pccg-gunmetal-5700-gaming-system

    https://www.pccasegear.com/bundle/476

I can't find any reviews on this Phanteks PSU so I'm going to assume its shit? Also 256GB SSD? Yeah he can install games on the HDD but why should he have to suffer those loading times :P

I'd wait for the AIB sapphire, given the uplift in perf from better cooling we've seen as well as driver improvements to come. Seasonic, Corsair, EVGA, all are good choices in PSU. 650 is probably good, but hit up AU's PCpartspicker.

    .

Yeah I'll be advising him to hold off, but right now he's super excited about getting into PC gaming so there's a chance he'll bite the bullet and get something prebuilt. But he's also going on holiday next month so if I can get him to wait until September it'd be really good as I think MSI are going to be releasing updated MSI B450 tomahawk motherboards that are ryzen 3000 ready.

Lots of people are super annoyed at flashing their bios right now to make their current motherboards compatible, so if I can personally avoid having to do that for him all the better.

Also I'm aware of Seasonic, Corsair, EVGA being respected brands, but every company has shit products.

I was more looking for feedback on what model PSU people currently use and any issues.

The EVGA 650W SuperNOVA G+ holds a respectable position in the PSU tier list on LTT forum : https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1045610-new-psu-tier-list/

For that price it seems a good pick, but if there's anyway to save some money it'd be really appreciated. This is also the cheapest EVGA PSU at this Scorptec at 139AUD. Back when I bought my EVGA 750W Supernova G2 PSU years ago I got it for 149AU, now it's 169AUD. Prices in this country suck right now.

The Corsair TX650M seems to be in the same tier for 135AUD, but isn't fully modular and not all the cables are sleeved. For a saving or 4AUD doesn't seem worth it.

The Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 650W is 149AUD, so no savings there at all.

These are all 80+gold PSUs for power efficiency. Like I said earlier I feel it's best to get a good PSU for an expensive build, and these all seem good. I was just trying to find out if anyone knew of cheaper models that aren't shit. Because if I recommend a PC to my friend and a super cheap PSU kills the system I'm going to be in real shit as our desks are next to each other at work.

@Heatwave talk to a rep or manager and see if they're willing to give you some sort of combo deal? Like if you hold off until Sept and buy most of the build from them, can they swing some sort of ~10% discount for getting the sale.

@Aridhol fun fact: I had a 7970 that caused all kinds of problems due to CCC and drivers being shit. I ended up returning the card and getting a GTX 780.

    It's a C8Hero with a useless waterblock and a 5GB LAN for $350 more than the C8Hero.

Gigabyte's X570 AORUS Xtreme is genuinely overkill, and has no fan on the mobo, but... $700.

I'm probably going with the C8Hero. Not sure if if Wifi is something I want onboard.

I doubt it they'd do a user picked combo. They might have sales though, but usually for discontinued stock. So he could save about 115AUD by getting a 2600 now instead of a 3600, but less performance. I suppose down the track he could upgrade to a 3600 or 3700X, but that's just more money being spend.

Also on Builzoid's own channel he tore apart the Asrock Extreme 4 and Steel Legend for being the same.

So far based on specs alone, with no on hands testing, he thinks the Taichi is good. However he also thinks Asrock tend to have bad bios.

He didn't discuss the MSI X570 gaming pro carbon though, which honestly looks interesting.

Still waiting for more indepth reviews regarding the chipset fans because something like this is not acceptable at all

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGabOz7LORo

Regarding your question of the ram height with the Noctua D15, it really depends the size of your case and whether you feel the need for having the front fan. With a wide enough case you can raise the front fan to make room for the ram. Or you can just not have the front fan and the CPU temps with raise a few degrees. This is based on a few reviews I've seen though, not from personal experience (yet)

@Heatwave at the end of the day, it's about effort and opportunity cost, but your friend could most certainly sell the 2600 later to try to recoup some of the price. The next 6 months will likely see a mild glut of used 2600s for sale, but it could easily be sold next year for someone looking to build or upgrade a value/budget build.

Edit: FWIW even though Australia is roughly the size of America, I assume you all live within an hour of each other; but again someone like Bryan and TechYesCity could probably do a lot more for you than we can.

managed to pick up a 3rd 6TB ironwolf drive for 205cad (~157usd), so that was a great deal.

My NAS has 4 bays, 2 are already filled with 6TB drives. looking at the price premium for switching to 8TB for the second two just wasn't worth it (also I realized i only need a 3rd drive right now anyways)

Yeah I noticed that CL16 3200 is good, price wise. Cl19 3600 is also doable.

Cl16 3600 is over 300 bucks for anything in stock for 16 gigs. If the $150-170 options ever get restocked or the price drops, I'd consider it.

Right now I have 2333 DDR4, so that's not going to fly with a Ryzen 3700. I'm thinking the higher clockspeed will be more beneficial than the tighter timing.

Basically I have the budget for a Ryzen 7 3k, and about $300 for the mobo and RAM. I'm not blowing the extra 200 bucks on 1% more performance.

If you get CL14 3200 B-Die RAM you should be able to get it run to 3600 CL16 on a x570 without any issue from what I've read which is the sweet spot anyway for the new Ryzen.

I went with the Corsair Vengance LPX 3200 CL16 x64 kit this morning.

Hopefully I can either tighten the timings up a little bit, or bump it up to 3600 at 16 or 17 CL. But for that base rated speed and price, I think that's the best deal I'll see on 64gigs for the near future.

Yeah at 32, I've got a lot of better options. But 64GB for the workloads I'm doing will be extremely useful. Being able to drop most of a 4k video file into active memory for scrubbing and editing is just such a great feeling.

Well...2070 Super installed and, uh...yeah. Reason I didn't post an update sooner is that I've been using it instead of typing this up. Monster Hunter World now runs at a consistent 110fps with the high resolution texture pack installed (at around 70C...if I enable the frame limiter to lock it at a rock-solid 60fps, temps don't go above 6545C (edit-got the number wrong...was paying closer attention just now)).

I suppose I should fire up GTA 5 and Battlefield 5 tonight to see how those fare. Or maybe I should finally fire up FF15...

Although, the one hiccup I had was with MSI Afterburner. As it turns out, I hadn't updated it in a loooong time...so when it saw the 2070 Super, it didn't know what to do with it with regards to fan speeds. So the first hour I was playing MHW with it, it was using the default fan profile which was peaking out at 75C. All in all, though, I'm really happy with the card.

does this seem like a good basic bitch 27" 1080p monitor? https://www.newegg.com/asus-vp278h-p-27-full-hd/p/0AY-00PU-00012?reviews=all
nice and cheap, no reason to spend a few hundred more for a 4k monitor since I probably can't push 4k with a good framerate with my 1060 anyway.

So got my 64GB kit, because apparently ordering tech stuff here in Seattle on Amazon is amazing. So what did I do with it first? Ran a Minecraft server with 32GB of memory dedicated towards it, because why the fuck not.

where do you buy monitors online, just amazon? newegg seems to mostly just have listings for 3rd party sellers.

Direct from Dell is also an option. I suppose, in theory, you could also order from a place like Best Buy and have the monitor delivered to the store and you can go in for an in-store pickup.

You can also check B&H. Also Microcenter and Fry's, but both of those typically don't ship out.
