The review embargo for Spider-Man was up an hour ago, don't know why the Aquaman stuff started this week because that's still got at least a week before it's up
Overlap with other animated features currently released, hard to bring in non-target audience to see it. Hard-sell to those already done with the glut of superhero movies.
By well I don’t mean makes its money back. For the “best Spider-Man movie ever” I would expect gangbusters theater performance to be considered “performing well”. Also, just looked it up, this cost $90million to make.

it's a spider-man movie i can take my kids to, i can read the minds of every parent with an 8 year old "holy shit, I can take my kid to this spider-man movie"

What other animated features?
The only one released recently is Ralph 2 and it won't be much of an active competitor after 3 weeks in theaters by the time Spider-Verse drops.

Its a family friendly animated movie starring the world's most popular superhero released during Christmas time
It's gonna make money
With many other family friendly flicks coming out at the same time. Especially Mary Poppins.
Spider-Verse comes out the week before Mary Poppins and while they are both family friendly they 100% feel like complete opposite ends of that spectrum of programming

one thing's for sure: they're releasing this thing!
Also I think people keep saying this will be the super hero movie that does badly and then Venom makes a butt ton of money so I fully expect this thing to do extremely well
Most of the other holiday releases for a younger audience look kinda bad this year, what else even is there? Mortal Engines?
Mary Poppins seems like a completely different end but if thats absolutely MASSIVE I could see it maybe eating into this, but thats the only way I see this not being really big

Also, The Incredibles is different than something like Into The Spideverse.
I would compare this more to an animated Batman movie or other animated Marvel movie.
I think the idea that they don't make money because they don't get a theatrical release is backwards. I would say they don't get a theatrical release because studios don't expect they'll make money.
I promise you kids care more about spider-man than mary poppins

But who knows?
The only other theatrical animated Marvel/DC superhero movie released that I can even think of is Mask of the Phantasm which isn't a good point of comparison because A) it is 25 years old, the box office was very different in 1993 and C) it was famously underpromoted and sent out to die by its studio.
It could be why studios don't make them but the most plausible reason, to me, is that they just didn't see a point since the live action ones are making so much money and are relatively all ages fare. It isn't out of apprehension, its apathy.

Whenever I hear critics praise a movie like that, I just think cool, it’s probably pretty solid, or at least worth checking out. Then move on and ignore it as much as possible until I see it for myself.
Critical hype used to influence or annoy me more, but somewhere along the line I stopped caring, which I can’t recommend enough. At most it might get me to check something out a bit sooner or later.

Companies will do anything to make money. If there was money in theatrical release they would've done it. Capitalism knows no apathy only profit.

Yeah I've let my son watch The Avengers and that's...basically it. They're all the sort of pg-13 movie that i don't feel comfortable taking someone younger than 10 to.
my son was like when can i see infinity war and I was like hahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA nah dude, maybe when you're 13 maybe. and I really loved infinity war.

Yeah I'm excited for the flick, but I'm gonna need people to shut up about it now until it comes out.
My guess is it’s a pretty good animated flick, a decent Spider-Man movie, and it won’t perform well in theaters.
It's gonna make money
Animated superhero movies have mostly been direct to DVD for a reason in the past.

Uatu is actually about to start Bloodline, but just doesn't feel like they can see Kyle Chandler as anyone else but Coach Taylor....
Were you unable prior to this?

The Incredibles is an animated superhero movie and both films together made over a billion dollars
It isn't that they don't make money its that no one has made them theatrical releases before
That's why I said I could see it going either way.
