So, update on my constant controller disconnects thing: it seems to happen significantly less (as in, I had a single disconnect in a couple hour play session) when I played with the free joycons, but the dog controller keeps causing disconnects. I wonder if I can talk to Nintendo about that.
This has been really fun and addictive all night, but I'm sad to say the online experience is really bad right now.
Earlier in the night, I tried to play an arena with 1 online friend and 1 local friend. You can't do that right now. Then I tried 1 on 1s online, but the game forces you into a bunch of random style matches instead. All of that plus it being P2P so anyone that's lagging will slow everyone else down.
Even for Nintendo, this might be one of their worst online experiences. And we're paying for it too. Like really, what was Nintendo Online for if there's no dedicated servers, no true voice chat and barebone settings?
Hardest for me was The Boss spirit (The Metal Gear solid character. Not an actual boss)
Stamina match, with Zero Suit Samus seemingly set to quiet high level, with increased defenses + 60 more hp then you. On a floor covered with poison.
Hope you picked up an anti poison spirit.
Only won because I eventually fluked a ring out. I could barely touch her.
That one was pretty hard.
Dr. Wily's is also incredibly hard. Like 8 or 9 metal Megamans at 100 health, then Mario at the end.
Pauline was hard to as you only have 1.5 minutes to kill her while being protected by DK and Mario (starts with a hammer). You have reduced jump and it's a stage with lots of places for her to run around.
Pauline's spirit is what's been enabling me to beat some of these legend fights though. Heal when you shield attacks, combine with the heal when you smash skill gives a fair amount of survivability and what helped me beat Dr. Wily and The Boss
I like my fighting games but never actually played a smash game. I picked this on a wim and It’s really great, fantastic even. The fan service is incredible and the modes are great.
Finally got Simon and Richter through classic mode. That Simon final boss... Well I played Castlevania 4, but it still managed to surprise me. Very well done!
I have an old GameCube adaptor from the Wii U version. After busting it out last night, I went from feeling like a nervous rookie with the pro controller to feeling like I just drew Excalibur from the stone. Comfort zone is huge. Smacked around some people in 1v1 arenas online, but the lag was kinda bad. Maybe I need a wired adaptor after all. (No complaints whatsoever about lag on the controller, btw).
So I was sticking with Kirby in the story mode but I just recently switched over to Mii Swordfighter, who seems kinda good? The last Smash I played was Melee so I don't really know how most of these characters work.
I really wish I could find a heavy character in WoL. I'm using Bowser to smash the loving shit out of the Spirit Board whenever fancy strikes, but on the actual WoL I have a lot of troubles with getting juggled to hell.
Has anyone received their code in the mail to redeem Piranha Plant at all? I just earned the gold points on my Nintendo account, but I've received no email.

The e-mail with my code was titled "Thanks for your purchase of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game", and not something practical like "Piranha Plant Download Code". You might already have it - I know I had totally missed it. (Hearing other people had already gotten theirs prompted me to read back through everything Nintendo had sent me.)

Yeah I just found mine. Everyone should probably double check
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
I'm thinking I may need to shell out for a Pro Controller, finally. I play with the doggo gamepad typically, and I've always thought it was more than fine. I play Hollow Knight with it, Mario, BotW, etc., and I find it very comfortable. Can always do exactly what I want to do. But with Smash, it feels really clunky in my hands. I'm getting wrong inputs occasionally, but more than that, it just doesn't feel like Smash to me.
I tried changing the button mapping around a bunch from the defaults - I thought I might want it to control like Hollow Knight, where B (on bottom) is jump, Y (on left) is basic attack, and then I guess A (on right) is special, but that feels weird for Smash, too. Then I tried to make it more like the Gamecube controller by having B be basic attack and Y be special, but that felt weird, too. I'm back to the defaults for now and am finding it better. But the controller itself doesn't feel comfortable to me. I feel like I'm constantly thinking about it, even after a few hours of play. I'm not getting to a flow state at all.
Have the incorrect-input issues been corrected with the latest (i.e. the Smash version) Pro Controllers?
Edit: Also, help: the character I'm enjoying most is Wii Fit Trainer. I let out a huge sigh of frustration when I unlocked her in WoL (rather than one of my typical faves), and, uh, she's freaking rad as shit
I feel like I should be dismissing all low tier primary spirits for cores to level up the good 3-star ones but my completionist itch wants me to hang on to everything. Haven't gotten any duplicate spirits yet either.
I haven’t played a smash game since, I dunno, maybe the very first one? There’s so much going on in this game that it’s quite overwhelming and I’m quite bad so far. But golly, it’s fun still. That’s a mark of a good fame right there.

Calling this now: all five DLCs are going to be Jokers.
DLC 1: Joker from Persona 5
DLC 2: Joker from Monster Hunter
DLC 3: Joker from Mass Effect
DLC 4: Joker from Suikoden
DLC 5: Walui-- jk, Joker from Batman
For somebody with no built in muscle memory with a GameCube controller, does it have any advantages over using the Pro? I’m really into this game, which is great but also a little surprising because I wasn’t a huge fan of the series before Ultimate. I played everything except the WiiU version, but not for very long.
I want to make sure I’m not missing out on something by using the Pro controller, even though I love it. Might be my favorite console controller of all time. Definitely top 3, but if the “best” setup is the GC, I’d like to switch over ASAP

If you're doing it just for Smash, I'd just get a GC controller instead. The Pro controller's joystick is just really inferior to the GC's, even with sensitivity turned up. The Pro controller has been great for everything else, but I'm switching/waiting for a GC adapter to arrive.

I'm fine with the pro controller for now, but there are a lot of times I want to tilt up/down/side and attack, but the game recognizes it as a smash attack instead. No idea whether that's because of the controller or because I'm very bad, though.
I like having L/R and ZL/LR available though.

Oh my god yes, I have never used a GCN contriller before this and it feels so much more natural for Smash than the pro it's not even funny. I can see why bringing back Gamecube controllers for this release is a thing. The rumble is also very good, it's much... uh.. rumblier.
Was really hoping my Ridley amiibo would, you know, unlock Ridley. Apparently not. You just get a FP.
No, if you want a character in this game you have to fucking work for them.
Last night my friends and I were using the language exploit to try to just grind out the whole roster. We lost against far more new challenger CPUs than we won against.
By the way, using the language exploit is worth it if only for the chance to hear the announcers and see the names of the characters in different languages which can be absolutely hilarious. Isabelle has a totally different name in most regions (my favorite name for her is Fuffi), as do many of the Pokemon (favorite name for Incineroar is Fuegro). Also, of course, Villager is translated for every language (favorite being Dorpsebewoner).

I managed to unlock Bowser pretty early on and now I'm just ripping through spirit fights.
Like, a lot of them end in two hits.
Not the MGS ZSS fight, though.
That was extremely rough. Especially because I started trying to beat it at around 1am.
When I finally managed it, the 1 on the countdown was starting to go away and I was at about 5% health.
I also picked up (by which I mean my wife used some of her Christmas bonus to buy me) a pro controller. The layout is sliiiightly off for my hands (thumb wants to be just a bit past the face buttons) but my goodness it's a lovely piece of hardware. The shoulder buttons are particularly delightful.
I think the GameCube controller still lends itself better to things like rolling your thumb from X to A, but because I once again put off buying an adapter for too long, I'm gonna give the pro a real chance.

One of Nintendo's biggest franchises is now loosely connected to a game series featuring weaponized stands of Satan, Lucifer and a giant green penis monster on a chariot.

Went to a friend’s house for a release day bash and played for almost 7 hours straight. This game is extremely fun.
Obviously we were smashing all night so we barely played the single-player stuff. All said we still unlocked less than half of the roster. The game is just huge.
Of the new fighters I enjoyed Simon the most. His projectile game gives him so many options.
I ended up mostly playing Zelda though. I’ve never really touched her in previous games but her specials feel a lot better now. I really enjoy building a phantom boyfriend with her reworked down-special.
All-in-all, it really makes me want to get a switch of my own.

So my OCD - it's going to prevent me from releasing spirits or otherwise get rid of them.
Do you ever get duplicate spirits? If I dismiss a spirit, can I still see it in the spirit collection?

I'm so so glad that marth was available in the first set of characters.
Also, these spirit fights are tough. I was finally able to get an ace, but I don't know how you'd even start approaching the legend ones
