I can tell a lot of love went into this DLC but as a gamer who never even heard of Persona up until now, it's all very uninteresting. Just seems like some strange, somewhat generic anime stuff? Fingers crossed for something I can get excited about in the next DLC pack.

Yeah, I thought the game had already met its bullshit anime quota several characters ago, so as much ad I'm still quite pleased with the game overall this fighters pack so far has been a waste. Fighter #2 needs to bring it.

Persona 5 is great, you should look into it. It's a pretty big franchise now. They don't have too much "anime," just too much Fire Emblem.

Yeah, despite the visuals, Persona 5 is pretty much free of tired anime tropes. Don't let that scare you off.

we must have played different games or something

Compared to, say, my Hero Academia, Persona 5 feels like an episode of Frasier.

Yes. It usually relates to the story, though P4 isn't as obvious about it.

It's supposed to reflect the heart of its chosen guest or somesuch. It's been a constantly-descending elevator, a limousine driving through inpenetrable fog, a prison, a recital room, a clock tower, a dining hall and a theatre.

Yeah, I was just using the example of whichever version of the Velvet Room that is to show that the Persona staff are clearly aware of Twin Peaks, and given how many thematic or setting ideas the two have in common, it seems safe to say that the show was a big inspiration for the games.

I was hoping with MK11 hitting Switch today maybe, just maybe they would announce the next DLC fighter is Sub-Zero and/or Scorpion.

Question: Exactly how important is the gore to the identity of a Mortal Kombat character, if they were to get in?

I ask because Bayonetta makes for an interesting test case. Before her addition, people often would say that the violence in her games was too tied to the character, and she wouldn't be able to get into Smash without toning her down, which would ruin the point of her inclusion. However, she did get in, and the blood and such was toned down, but she still works because her character, attitude, and the stylish nature of her combat is retained, which turns out to have been really important for her.

However, would that same sort of thing work for a Mortal Kombat character? I can see many saying the answer is "no", that in this case, the extreme violence (for better or worse) is a core identity of the series. What do you think?

It's basically the only reason I'm gonna pass on MK11 at this point. Some of the trailers people have been linking in the Fighting Games thread have been really good, and this is coming from someone who was never a big fan of the series. The new iterations of old characters are good, the new (or newer) characters seem cool, the gameplay looks pretty good, and it's self-aware, knowing when to play things more serious and when to lean into the schlock the series is known for. Hell, Shang Tsung is being portrayed by the actor from the live action movie.

So, I don't know what an MK fan would answer, but for me, the series has enough other reasons to be interested in it that I don't think it would matter. It's like the T&A in Dead or Alive, it's what the games are infamous for, but there's actually a pretty solid series behind that and it just seems kind of limiting to let the games be defined by it.

I'd love Scorpion & Sub-Zero in Smash, and I think you could just get away with it. (Like... during the victory screen have "Finish Him!" pop up, and then have the character grab the camera and turn it away or something cheeky.)

But... Mortal Kombat 11 isn't releasing in Japan. So it's very unlikely.

The Super Nintendo version of Mortal Kombat (somewhat hilariously) replaced all the blood sprays with sweat and Fatalities replaced with far less lethal "Finishing Moves". So it's not unheard of for a Mortal Kombat game to be toned down on a Nintendo system. And NRS certainly has a certain house style for both gameplay and animation systems that would make an MK character have a distinct "feel".

On the other hand, that SNES version of Mortal Kombat is rather infamous for that removal. I wonder if they'd go that route today.

I mean, Nintendo definitely wouldn't censor an actual MK game on their system today, but it probably would be toned down for Smash.

MVC got Phoenix, though that's not anything in terms of him not getting in, I'm sure. Though, Apollo with Trucy as an assist could also be neat.

Sub-Zero would be the safest option. Most of his moves are ice attacks and he even has a trip.
They'd probably use his friendship as a final smash which would be hilarious.

If anyone wants to know if MK can be toned down look up Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe (which is technically Mortal Kombat 8 and is counted in the series as such). They did just fine without ripping any spines out.

Personally I think Sub-Zero would fit right in when it comes to Smash. Ed Boon has said recently he'd like to see Scorpion in Smash though, so maybe he would be more likely.

It feels like a lot of the spirits in Smash aren't all that unique. It's either a blank main spirit template with 1-3 slots of a particular colour, or the support spirits are all just copies of other supports.

Does anyone even play with spirits enabled outside of Adventure mode and the Spirit Board? When friends play or host tournies at their place, spirits are always disabled.

After a while the novelty does wear off. From a gameplay perspective yeah, you quickly see that they're all the same. At this point what remains interesting is who and what the fight is regarding the spirit, and what the ability might be. Like I got a kick out of seeing that the Phantom Thieves spirit's ability is "Auto pickup items". I was also confused for a second when Wario came out as Makoto's "persona" until it clicked. Oh yeah, the bike. :)

So based on the Labo spirits, I see two ROBs, a trio of MiiFighters, and no clue what you could make that car fight be. Probably another ROB. Or Villager in Onett stage.

The screenshot shows that the Car kit spirit is possessing 8 Bowsers Jr. Most likely, the conditions will include him heavily favoring his side-special (the kart-driving attack). It’s also a stamina match, or at least that’s what I assume from seeing “HP0” in the text.

    ————————————

God bless those loading screen tips. I had no clue that Wolf’s side-b could be angled further up or down after hitting the button, until I saw a loading tip to that effect. That really changes that move from an awkward anti-air to something with considerably more flexibility, both for attacking and for positioning. Being able to hit someone on the ground with the sweet-spot is just... beautiful.

Mortal Kombat is like the original violent video game controversy, that's what it's best known for. It's hard to imagine it as being Smash appropriate in tone, they're all about authenticity with each character but a family-friendly MK character would be fake as hell.

Ultraviolence isn't a core part of their DNA like Mortal Kombat is. Snake still feels like Snake even if he isn't killing people. Bayonetta still feels like Bayonetta even though you don't see her get nekkid when summoning hair demons. A Mortal Kombat character without blood or fatalities just feels off. (Anyone remember the crappy MK vs. DC game? This was before DC gave license to be really violent in Injustice.)
