A friend of mine is planning on grabbing that big necron forgeworld model. The Seraptek Heavy Construct?

In an effort to keep up with the arms race that is GW, is there a comparably powerful unit I could pair with my Deathwatch? Am I looking at a run of the mill knight or something else?

I don't know much about forgeworld stuff.

The Necron point changes seem pretty good. Maybe should have dropped Warriors a little more and the Vault increase wasn't necessary but overall I'm pretty happy I think.

I don't think any reasonable point decrease would make taking warriors over immortals and destroyer spam a viable choice

and the vault is one of the best units in the whole dang game

most forgeworld stuff is massively overcosted, so just take a knight gallant with the paragons gauntlet and eat that things lunch in a single round of combat

Really it seems like Reaminimation Protocols needs to be tweaked as a mechanic in general. The point reductions should help and are a step in the right direction, but Necrons just seem to have some design issues that run deeper than that.

I hope that this at least elevates them a bit.

So it's looking like Grey Knights didn't get any rules changes, -1 to hit chapter traits stayed, Power Armour hasn't been altered in any appreciable way (Tactical Marines didn't even get a points drop!)...

This Chapter Approved feels real disappointing. I was really hoping for more substantial changes.

Winter's quick overview of the whole book.

The rules for Cities of Death (bout 15 min in) have me very interested in trying those out for just standard play. They look like they might actually bring some cover dynamics back into the game:
Obscured units are -1 to hit
    Soft cover/Hardcover gives +1/+2 saves
Firing from elevation more than 3" gives +1ap

And then a whole set of warlord traits and stratagems.

Played my third game of 40k today. Had little time so we agreed on 1050 points.
My opponent fielded a baneblade. My Necrons ended up barely scratching it.
    I had:
    2x3 Wraiths
    3 destroyers
    10 immortals with gauss
    10 warriors
    cryptek with chronometron
    triarch stalker with heavy gauss

He basically had a Baneblade, astropath, primaris psyker, techpriest and about 4 or 5 10-man squads of guardsmen (can't remember).
All I managed to do was to kill about 3.5 squads of his infantry and give the baneblade 5 wounds. I ended up losing everything but the cryptek and warriors (at which point we ended the game).

Is it a dickish move to bring a superheavy to a game like this? I feel like unless I had a Doomsday Ark or a Doom Scythe, I wouldn't have much of a chance of damaging it and I only have one of each of those anyway, so I wouldn't stand much of a chance no matter what points we played.

I’d always imagined it to be incompatible technology in their mark X armor making it unable to interface with smallmarine vehicles for battle info, recharge power packs, etc. so they have to stick with the same vendor (a very wealthy Cawl) for all their associated needs.

Like that’s a perfectly inline reason for crippling inefficiency that makes sense in 40k and the real world too. But also easy to fix with a software update, whenever someone gets around to it.

The thing is so big, it'd wipe out half the table. That would be a fun special rule, though.

And what do you mean, it's a ripoff? Game Workshop would never take inspiration from anywhere :).

I played a game of Blackstone Fortress yesterday, which was really fortunate because I suddenly found myself away on business and hadn't been able to pick up my own copy. We definitely made a bunch of mistakes that we slowly corrected as we became more familiar with the rulebooks, but even so we had a great time. We did a one-off expedition with the hardest win condition, which in my mind didn't increase the difficulty of the game but rather the length of it, meaning we ended up playing for about 3 hours. Pious, the one holding the flame-thrower, was who I played and extremely effective against pretty much all groups, except for the one time I got in charge-range of the Chaos Lord and immediately took 2 wounds and 2 grievous wounds, which left me crippled the rest of the game. It was an interesting mechanic, and one that I'd like to explore in more of a campaign length game. I doubt I'll have time to put all the models together though before I go back to my parent's house for the holidays.

Pious herself is a great model, as are all the models in the game. I'm not a big fan of the default black and red color for her, and was designing an off-white color scheme in my mind for her before I realized I essentially recreated the default screaming banshee look. Still, I started thinking about how neat a clean white leather armor Sisters of Battle would look, until I reminded myself that I'm only about 15% of the way through my Dark Angel models, and I've got a whole army's worth of Dark Eldar to follow it up on. Not to mention a bunch of the Ork Speed Freaks models, and all of the chaos and blightguard extras my starter sets came with. At my rate of painting I might already be good on models through 2020, which just really means I need to spend more time painting. I regret not bringing my project box on this trip though it would have meant bringing a second suitcase.

Speaking of transporting minis, I'm really intrigued by the new wavy foam trays that GW sells. I've tried a lot of different foam storage cases at this point, including pluck foam, but those look particularly easy and adaptive. Anyone have any experience with them? I would even consider making some myself with a good tutorial, and potentially converting my X-Wing minis into those trays if they don't bump around too much. The new project boxes also fit inside the case which would make them ideal for me and the amount of traveling that I do, though I'm not exactly excited about the total cost to convert over. I'm currently kicking myself for not buying that air paint bundle when it first went on sale. And yes despite the idiocy of using a paint pot instead of a dropper bottle, I still would have gotten them: I use those disposable plastic droppers from chemistry lab to load my airbrush and they do a great job with minimal waste. That being said, while I've got a project box and it works well enough to transport via car on small trips, does anyone have any experience putting those in checked baggage for a flight? I'd hate for my paint pots to explode all over my clothes just before Christmas...

I have some of those wavy foam trays for a Pelican style carry case.

They're fine for primaris, you can just poop them in head first and they stay in place. They suck for anything with lots of bits that stick out, ie basically all my Tyranids.

I'm thinking that if I start Kill Team, I could use the Space Marine Heroes I have as my Kill Team. I was watching a tutorial last night on painting Howling Griffons and, although I want Howling Griffons, I could never paint a whole army that way. A kill team of them might be doable though. Any idea about how many tac marines might go in a KT?

Friday, I bought just one last pack, and managed to get a second Brother-Captain Thassarius. I'm in an existential quandary over keeping it or trying to ebay it for big bucks. If I were to get into KT, then he could be my commander, if I were to also get into KT: Commanders.

7 ish Marines I think is about right. You’ll have a few extra points though. That’s with all level 1 specialists in a 100pt team. I don’t remember what the point value of a SM commander is though. Actually, is there a vanilla SM option, or are they just Primaris?

    飛べねぇ豚はただの豚だ。
  • SmokeStacksSmokeStacks The Myth, the Legend, the Bowman, the Shambler FuckerRegistered User regular
Space Marine commanders are all Primaris.

if you're doing a Space Marine killteam it's going to be tough if your meta is competitive and you're limiting it to tacticals though. Scouts with camo cloaks and sniper rifles are a riot in kt (make one a demo specialist and he can be handing out mortal wounds on a 4+ in a game where most models only have 1W), and the second wound from Primaris Marines can save your bacon when your modelcount is so low. A Reiver close combat specialist with a combat knife gets 5 attacks a turn, and you can use a strategem to make that 10 cc attacks in a turn if you absolutely want to kill whoever it is the model is in combat with.

Luckily, when it comes to Killteam, Space Marine models are fairly cheap. You can get a box of Scouts for $25, and a three pack of easy to build Intercessors or Reivers for $15.

An entire Killteam made out of the Space Marine Heroes models would look pretty cool though. I have a few (one from a blind box and five from the Space Marine Adventures game) and the poses and bases are pretty great.

I'm foreseeing a lot of arguments in the future regarding whether or not a "Superheavy Auxiliary Detachment" is the same as a "Superheavy Detachment" due to a new detachment in Vigilus Defiant.

For a total of 5CP you will be able to deepstrike a Stompa that has a 5+ invuln, rerolls its charge distance, and gets +1 to hit and wound in close combat. It will have 40 wounds and in close combat can choose between either swinging six times at S20, AP-5, 6D or swinging eighteen times at S10 AP-2 D3D, all hitting on 2s. Also, it holds 20 infantry units.

You'll have to pay almost a thousand points for the Stompa alone, but still.

This language has been used already in the Knight codex and confirmed that a super heavy detachment is anything that is not an auxillary detachment. I think they even have clarifications in the FAQs on this as well.
