So I just came back from college and decided to reformat my C drive and reinstall XP Pro. All goes well without any error but suddenly my internet speed has dropped to an absolute crawl. I'm using a wireless cable modem and my Wii seems to be downloading at its regular speeds. I'm honestly seeing 56k speeds. On top of that whenever I scroll on a webpage it seems to present something similar to a scan line effect. Any ideas on what could be doing this? Everything ran fine before, I just figured my install of XP had met its half life and now would be a good time for a fresh start.
Edit: Oh i've tried both firefox and explorer. Both are terribly slow. I'm attempting to update the drivers on my video card but. . .they require a lot of time to download.
Have you installed any drivers? Not having graphics card drivers installed is whats causing the laggy scrolling. You should try downloading wireless/network drivers first, or if at all possible hook up your computer with a cable and maybe that will fix your 56k speeds.
The screen lags. I'm downloading windows updates and trying to update things systematically. The first update I made fixed the slow internet problem so now I can download the video card drivers without a one day wait at 3KBs.
I think things are back in working order. It was just a driver problem. I really should have considered that sooner. Thanks everyone. Now i've got a empty PC. .
. . .with that in mind I can't find the original computer help thread so does anyone have a list of some must have software?
This happened to me on my Sony Vaio after a number of formats. I'm not sure what caused it, but it would always run slow and I would experience the same type of problems you say you have.
I never did really find a solution, but I thought it was probably the HD, but I'm really not sure. The MB didn't have any problems, leaks or damage. Fans worked well and all that. Software and driver updates didn't work for me either.

If th screen lags, it means you haven't installed the proper video drivers (or ANY drivers) for your videocard.

Hope you can find a solution.
