That we're even reporting on McConnell's position is baffling to me. We all knew exactly what he was going to do. It wasn't even a question.

This was our only possible outcome.

    McConnell is a monster.

CNN is reporting that GOP sources are saying the vote will be after the election this year (lame duck session).

58% of Americans voted for a Democratic Senator in 2018 and McConnell is using the 2018 Senate elections to claim he represents the will of the people because fuck you liberals.

The real question to me right now is if Trump appoints before the election. If it's pre-election, Trump will have a friendly SCOTUS to rule in his favor in a contested election. He will cheat even harder. The odds that we wind up with a full blown violent fascist coup goes up significantly.

But also the odds of pissed off motivation in states where he can't cheat a win, and riots in the streets if they pull it off increase significantly.

I'm betting for a lame duck confirmation before states are certified depending on the winds.

Trump also is loathe to spend his second term 'only because SCOTUS cheated for him'. Which will be the whole narrative and something everyone should harp on.

He doesn't want the whole 'popular vote loser / EC / Russia' thing. It infuriates him. So definitely stress how he will only win because of SCOTUS and that will be how he is remembered - a two time loser who loopholes his way in.

I mean, don't the hearings take monthes anyway? Even if Trump put forward a candidate tomorrow, between the time to vet someone and get through the hearings it seems like it would likely push it into next year anyway. I simply don't think they'll be so stupid as to start the hearings prior to November even if they nominate someone, because that'll just give Democrats a great speaking platform to campaign from. Idk anything is up in the air at this point, but I think it's going to get pushed to November and the actual vote will get delayed until the new Senate seats in January (I desperately hope.)

They will ram whoever it is through in two or three days. There won't be any hearings, just a few minutes to show how hard he can give Trump's ego a good stroking, and then they vote him in just based on that. They want loyalty to Trump and the Republican party first, knowledge of law comes in a distant second.

there is literally no chance they'll somehow accidentally miss the deadline. if it was late october and not late september? maybe. but there's just way too much time. this has been mitch's goal the last 4 years, he's been salivating at replacing the most liberal justice on the court for 30 years with a lunatic.

This is true, you could theoretically have Roberts refuse to accept the justice (if possible, I'm not sure about this particular procedure) in order to apply some pressure against court packing.
