Freshman campus? What the heck, Duke?

Yeah, our practices were 3-6 and two blocks from the cafeteria, so prime dinner time afterwards. Winter practices were 10PM-12, but there were campus restaurants that did half price dinner after 11PM for people that were hungry after.

Yeah, Duke has an East campus, a West campus and a Central campus.

Central campus is solely apartment living for Juniors and Seniors. All the Freshmen live in dorms on East campus, and there's a single meal hall there for them. Most classes are on West campus, but the Music building and maybe one other building is on East campus. From the East campus bus stop to the West campus bus stop is about a mile and a half, and there's buses constantly going back and forth during regular hours, but on the weekends it's just the Central campus bus, which winds through the Central campus apartments and takes about 30 minutes to go from East to West.

You're required to live on campus for 3 years, and many opted to do it for 4. Duke is about 1/3 greek and all the frats/sororities are located on West campus. When you include, um, I think they were called "selective living groups" or something (they functioned as co-ed frats, complete with an "application" process that was basically like rushing), that percentage is north of 50%, all located on West campus.

The city of Durham is not, historically, a huge fan of Duke so the administration has done everything they can to keep students on campus and away from the city.

Huh, that's really interesting. I always like hearing about what other college campus experiences were like.

At Pitt, all educational buildings were pretty much in a ~5 block radius. Most of the freshman dorms were in 3 towers in the middle of campus, with the main all you can eat cafeteria in the basement. Next to the freshman dorms were the sophmore/junior suite style dorms which also had another cafeteria below it, but it wasn't all you can eat. There were a couple of other dorms spread out around the campus, some being a lot more apartment like with a full kitchen.

I left the dorms ASAP because room & board cost as much as tuition and off campus housing was cheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. My first apartment shared with 2 other people was $300/month. Pretty much the entire neighborhood (south oakland) was student housing, though there were some families mixed in. And being right next to campus meant just a 10 minute walk to classes, which wasn't too bad.

Spring/Fall practice was right on the lawn next to several campus buildings, so it was easy to get to after class. Winter practice was at the top of a huge hill, pretty much the furthest possible place on campus. It was an indoor turf field that was TERRIBLE and there were many injuries due to it and since we were the lowly Ultimate club, we had the worst time slots.

Yeah I wouldn’t use it for a recipe that calls for a whole bunch. Wouldn’t be economical and any portioning errors could get huge. I mostly use it when something calls for a very small amount but dried would be sad and not flavorful.

I also typically don’t buy the parsley one and stick with basil (A+++), cilantro (A), and garlic (B+, but leagues ahead of C- jarred minced).

It would take a lot for me to get away from fresh garlic. Mostly because I love chopping stuff, especially when I figured out a much easier way of pealing garlic. I usually have at least 3 bulbs of garlic on hand and I've never had any go bad since I use the stuff all the time.

I should look into the basil one since I love basil and the dried stuff is just sad.

Nightmare Before Christmas is v good but I have no idea whether to watch it at Halloween or Christmas

Spencer's / general fatigue from seeing it in pop-culture talismanic objects has pretty well killed that movie for me.

That's the thing, "disruption" is an ideology about rapid change with little preparation. That's the explicit motto, right--move fast and break stuff.

I agree that institutions should be audited and constantly pushed to reform and improve, but that's a process that demands rigour, research, expertise, familiarity, cost/benefit analysis, etc. It's a lengthy, neverending process, and trying to shortcut it has nasty long-term consequences

The problem is that institutions necessarily have to exist in an environment where they're competing with these forces of rapid change regardless. I think a major issue with our existing apparatus for putting our foot on the breaks is that it just can't keep up the pace and it's failing us for this reason. The pace has changed, we need people with more knowledge of these fields regulating faster.

I think there's something to be said for the need for more drastic interventions. Sometimes institutions hit dead ends and need to be ripped up and re-planted. Revolutions can become necessary, particularly when we're stuck in these configurations where what ought to be a normalizing process is shredding us in half. Acknowledging that there is significant cost involved in this is vital, but iterating isn't always an option.

do you have an example where iterating isn't an option

i agree it's not an option for like NYC and Boston cabbies, but Uber is also very very bad

it seems like you're excited about technology and so want to accelerate things and are thus tempted to decide things are failing us when in fact it just kind of always sucks you can't improve results by going faster
