I did not click with Achilles spear tbh. Normal or spinny beats it out, just because of the special. Zeus shield is also real real good.
That the one where you dash up to your thrown spear? Yeah, unlocked and tried it last night. Hated it. Constantly ending up dashing into attacks/traps/lava/oh god so much lava.

Achilles aspect provides oodles of extra damage (+150% at max level, which is damn nifty) but you want to boost the special with Hermes and have extra dashes/Athena dash if possible since you'll be throwing your position all over the place. Also good to boost the speed of your attacks so you can throw out as much damage as possible in the window. I prefer the Hades spear because if you get extra attack damage and the hammers that makes the charged spin better you're pretty well set.
What do I need to buy to get that right side artwork?
That's the Lovely theme. I believe themes become purchasable after the first clear? Or after the credits. Once you have bought everything that actually helps progression, anyway.
I have that ready to purchase, I didn’t realize what it would theme. Time to save up to buy it
Achilles Spear has the same functionality as Zagreus Spear. If you hit Attack instead of Special after throwing it, it returns to your hand instead of triggering the dash.

Yeah, the Achilles Spear is literally just a power creep on the Zagreus Spear. As long as you don't mash X, you'll have as much control as you need.

Heh, 7 Heat bow with Aspect of Hera - Poseidon's Aid doing vicious damage with Exposed and Backstab damage, Artemis cast with Poseidon Duo for extra projectile, and Skelly saving my ass in the last battle. Also some unfortunately useless Ares boons. I felt like I wasn't doing good damage but that was a good time at 23 minutes
Woot woot! I had a feeling I would clear with the punchy punchy gloves first, I would always get further with those. Didn't even need my third Death Defiance!
Blimey, a few abject failures in between but my second win was an exploding spear throw/laser turret cast combo which took me to Dad with full life and I downed him without using a single defiance.
Finally cleared the "Dark Reflections" challenge. It was really fun re-learning how to play with all all the 'light' side options I had ignored before.
Anyone else think Hades was totally robbed of the Art Direction award? Ghosts of Tsushima is... pretty I guess, but to me it looks like every other AssCreed/Witcher/Souls etc etc AAA game out there.
Hades is just *soaking* in art in every way. You can’t look at anything from character design down to UI elements and not go, “That’s Hades!”

Expecting TGA to give an award to anything other than the shiniest of the shiny will always result in disappointment. Plus they’re probably pretty mad about that big anti-crunch article about SuperGiant.
I assume that a similar level of PR work and out and out bribes nets you a Game Award (which, by the way, needs a new name) as with the Oscars.
In that sense, Hades didn't stand a chance.
It should have taken Art Direction and Score / Soundtrack. Every single composition is an utter banger AND the story work supported as the music changes from areas, particularly past the final boss, AND the vocal work of Eurydice and Orpheus is just too good and too original.
I would also argue that SuperGiant deserved Studio/Game Direction given how they treat their employees versus the studios that actually won.
Also, hilariously enough The Game Awards own website doesn't list the winners, had to go to Google.
I’m currently playing Star Wars Squadrons and I would love for a game with its structure to learn a lesson from Hades’ hub area and its conversations, making the in-between-missions stuff much more reactive. I always look forward to returning to the hub and continuing my conversations and relationships.

I love the way the House of Hades is set up. Every time I die, it’s fine, because I get to talk with the people there. And by the time I’m done, I’m already near Zag’s room, so why not start another run?

This part was some sinister design. The "checklist" part of my brain always wants to end a game prepared for the next one. When I finish a run, I'll always talk/do everything at home, check out my quest log/mirror, select a weapon/trinket, then start the run. My willpower check comes into play as to whether I can put the Switch into sleep mode before giving into the temptation of seeing what the first boon offers.
"Oh cool, the whatever upgrade! Well, I need the auto-save, so let me go to the door. Hmmm....a Chaos gate. Might as well see what's in there."
And thus another run gets started.

life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies
Well, it took me about 40 runs, with 10 of those wins, and on a 8 win streak, but I reached the credits screen.
OMG the music.
Now working on deepening relationships, had to double check a guide to see if I was doing something wrong because i’ve been stuck on some locked hearts for awhile now.
Up to about 3-4 heat, and have unlocked 2 hidden aspects, passed with one of them.

As much as I love the inspired art in Hades, Ghost was like walking around in classical Japanese art in terms of the ratio of natural to manmade elements in most areas. The game got some of the themes that pervade Japanese art and didn't just take the visual and architectural details from it. Then it nailed elements from samurai films on top of that and does an amazing job rendering details in equipment.
Does God mode do anything other than the damage resist? Decided to turn it on after a few wins to push to the credits faster and only lost a single run after.
Also credits get. Not sure if I want to try and push for epilogue or hit up YouTube. I’m still loving the plot stuff but the epilogue feels a long way away yet when I check the requirements.

You'll find that a lot of people hit a rhythm after the first win. Like, it's not uncommon to get 2-3 in a row after that. I'd say keep going, unless you're not having fun anymore, then just YT it up.

Yeah I'm at around 50 runs now, and I don't think I've lost my last 15 or so. I feel like it's pretty hard to lose a run if you play ultra conservatively while climbing Heat. But part of the fun is pushing your limits, and I think at some point I'm going to get bored and just start doing some YOLO runs to find hilarious and crazy builds.
My last run I actually lucked into the laser cast build and managed to stack a bunch of the laser cast boons, too (extended duration, chill on hit, etc.). At the end whenever Hades did his stupid AOE lasers thing you couldn't tell where his lasers started and mine began.
honestly god mode is so good? I like that it allows for slowly teaching you the game so that by the time you turn it off, you're like, "hey, I *have* learned things" but then you can also turn it back on if you're, say, in Styx and like "FUCK satyrs holy SHIT"
Also! The Washington Post named this their Game of the Year! And my mom was like "Hey It's that game you keep talking about! When are you going to let me play it" and I'm sitting there like okay I will either have to buy the Steam edition with the money I don't have and set up the Steam Link I borrowed from a friend (though maybe Non Steam Game will work???), or I'll have to lug my entire desktop computer downstairs every time she wants to play, and I'll also need to buy a PC controller because mom has arthritis and *ho boy* if playing with KBM hurts *my* hands it WILL hurt her hands and---

If you need a PC controller I've had good luck just plugging in a new XBox One controller via standard USB C and it works great. You will probably need Windows 10, though.
I've also heard that PS5 controllers can be used on PC but don't have any firsthand experience with them.

I do not own any video game consoles. The newest controllers I have are for a PS2 :P
I just ordered one online, it'll be here Friday.
In other news, know what's fun? Having Pom Blossom, *and* landing Rare Crop in Tartarus. (It would actually have been nicer to land Rare Crop at the end of Asphodel or start of Elysium, because by then you've got enough boons BUT still have enough rooms left to , but it's still dope to have two Heroic boons)

The bow is the only weapon I have yet to clear with. The Attack just feels so painfully slow, I can't dash around and take potshots like I want to. Hoping I get Flurry Shot on my next attempt.

I’ve had my best runs with the Bow when I’m basically using the special as a melee attack, but I also haven’t mixed things up too much to explore more distance options. The ability to plink annoying enemies from afar helps keep health up between bosses though.

Funnily, the only clears I've had are with the bow and exogriff. (2 with bow, one with exogriff)
The bow becomes really fun when you unlock the aspect that has the homing special. It went from one of my least favorite weapons (right above sword) to being one of my favorites. Finding the right weapon aspect for you really makes or breaks how fun a weapon is.
Honestly Bow, in all aspects, even Zagreus, is probably my second most reliable weapon right after Shield of Chaos specifically. I have to be thoroughly asleep to mess a bow run. Generally by slamming myself repeteadly into the spears in Elysium.
Inquisitor772 x Penny Arcade Fight Club ChampionA fixed point in space and timeRegistered Userregular
The default bow aspect is actually pretty straightforward assuming you get deflect on special. You shred anything that tries to kill you with ranged spam and there are tons of boons/upgrades to deal with melee closers (including the standard shoot-n-kite, or good ol' kill 'em before they get close).
I do find it interesting that both the gun and the bow have Deadalus upgrades that essentially turn them into melee weapons. I think my first successful runs with both utilized those upgrades, too. Adament Rail in particular changes from the most frustrating weapon in the game to one-hit kill shotgun.

I cannot explain why the rail is one of my better weapons though frequently firing off the special while reloading is part of getting more out of the rail. But it went from good to absurd after I started focusing on Zeus boons with it. Get the chain lightning on attack boon, extra chain lightning bounces, and lightning adds Jolt status and then one of the hammer upgrades that lets an attack hit more than one opponent whether by chaining or piercing and you turn into underworld Palpatine.
