DS Lite Screen Issue: The Phantom Stylus [Solved]

My brother got a DS Lite, and lately it's been having an odd issue that I can't resolve with a quick Googling. Occasionally when he turns it on, it thinks that a part of the touchscreen is being held down, so it zooms through DS and game menus as if you were constantly clicking on that part of the screen.

It doesn't happen all the time, and sometimes it starts when it's first turned on, sometimes after a few minutes of play. Other buttons and screen clicks still work, but it's as if you're interrupting the other set of clicks; as soon as you stop rapidly tapping somewhere else it goes back to its favorite spot.

Searching for "DS Lite screen stuck" is full of stuck pixel problems, and this doesn't seem to be addressed on Nintendo's site (that I can find). He does have one of those screen protectors on, and he thinks (but isn't sure) that the problem didn't exist before he got it; on the other hand, he put the protector on almost right away, so maybe he was just lucky before that. Other than that, the DS doesn't have any problems, hasn't been dropped or smashed or anything.

It's fairly new and still under warranty, but not within the store's 30-day return policy. Should we just have Nintendo replace it? Is there something else (the screen protector?) that could be easily remedied that's to blame? We'd like to avoid having to ship it back and forth, but it's practically unplayable at the moment.

I don't know of a case where this has happened with a DS specifically, but this is a problem that can occur with touch screens. If you apply too much pressure with a pointy object to a certain part of the screen, or leave the corner or point of something heavy laying on top of the screen, then the di-electric layer of the screen is damaged and you can get phantom "input" at that location. This happened with voting machines in Maryland I believe, and caused some real problems with voting results in 2006.

The screen just has to be replaced, unless someone knows of an alternate way to fix that.

Just get Nintendo to fix it. Nintendo warranty support is killer.

    Yeah call Nintendo.
I did have this problem for a bit last fall.
My solution was I put on of those screen protectors on it.
Once I removed it, everything was fine.
Maybe not your problem, but worth a look.

OK, reading these responses and checking Google more suggests that it's either the screen protector, or it needs complete replacement. Thanks guys. I guess this can be locked, unless there are any other suggestions.
