I don’t get the appeal of a ten hour speed run, but if it’s filler for the night hours then fine.

I haven't watched it, but I've heard that the SGDQ FF7 run is really good despite being long.

Well, they were also doing absolutely absurd step manipulation in that game and being very detailed in how every minor thing they were doing was impacting the game-state.

I watched and enjoyed the 7 hour FFVI 100% run.

I usually don't like glitch runs unless it's minor glitches. I watched a Pokemon Blue run one time where they basically didn't play the game and just used glitches to get everything.

GDQ has been very good about showcasing categories other than Any% lately so we get less "here's 5 minutes of random gibberish polygons then credits" runs.

Sometimes yes. Just depends on the glitch and the game. The pokemon one was like... 45 minutes of menu manipulation.

Listen my first playthrough of Super Mario World I just took too long to scroll the screen holding an object going down a pipe to put Yoshi into the item box and overflow the memory then spawn the credits and I enjoy seeing someone nail it better than I did.

there's a lot of subtlety in glitches and how they make or break a run

for me I think the line is just how much they skip the game or ruin the spirit of the gameplay that we're all familiar with

like OoT is a glitch exhibition, but in most categories you're still mostly playing the game (100% is about the longest speedrun I can stomach)

but by contrast, Doom 2016 is mostly just "clip out of the map, walk through the ether to the checkpoint, repeat until done"

I definitely prefer runs that lean more towards perfect execution than glitches. The more of the normal game flow they interact with the better.

Like, LoZ speedrunning has (minor) glitches left and right, plus counter manipulation on item drops. But it's still playing the game. Just better than 99% of people.

A run that just goes OoB to skip to the end of levels over and over is boring.

RPG runs can be pretty interesting to watch.

SMRPG is probably my favourite though, because it combines some cool glitches, menuing, some subtle game manipulation, platforming, and superjump timing

Yeah this is where I'm at too. Glitches can be a ton of fun, but I'm here to see people play the game. Seeing people manipulate the game so they don't have to play it is intellectually interesting (sometimes) but not terribly exciting.

SMRPG is probably my all time favorite run. It has everything (as KetBra has pointed out).

In addition to having everything, it also has some coincidental pacing that really makes it feel good to watch, with peaks and valleys in terms of intensity and execution, with a grand finale of doing the same insane trick 3 times in a row perfectly

Also, in terms of glitches, my favorite moment from last AGDQ/SGDQ (I forgot which now) was Pausa.

Myself, I tend to prefer glitchy runs. Less glitchy runs are fun if I know the game, but glitchy runs are fun either way.

This is my favorite skip of an entire game, it's even glitchless, though the commentary is a little much:

It's not a traditional glitch, though. I think the "glitch" is pretty clever :)

Well, the last glitch at least. Not sure if there were any traversal glitches beforehand.

FYI, if you're interested in checking out a FF9 run, the WR holder Luzbelheim is an hour and a half in to an Any% run on PSX twitch.tv/Luzbelheim

Although as I was typing this his stream started acting up on my TV.

Final Fantasy games are generally good about having unique mechanics on their boss fights, and just enough complexity in the abilities available to the player that you can cheese those mechanics in creative ways. It's rare that you see the same strategy deployed through the entire game, whereas, say, a Pokemon speedrun is mostly finding that one good Pokemon who can blow up the whole game and beating everything's face in. And since there's such an emphasis on the strategy and your path through the game, you don't have something like a Dragon Quest speedrun's "now kill metal slimes for the next hour and a half in order to reach the minimum viable experience level" (yes that's actually a thing).

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Glitch runs are a fun treat because they show some weird fact about a game.

But they lack staying power because many don’t require much skill. A person running SMW is entertaining; a person doing the same manipulation trick yet again not so much.

I dunno I'm pretty entertained by bizarro cutscene warps and rocketing yourself through geometry at high speeds with a railgun and donkey kong moonkicking into the stratosphere and swimming through the floor pretty much every time

"glitch run" could mean a lot of things but I think stuff like SMW manipulation into bam roll credits is sort of its own class of boring seperate from the wacky stuff

My least favorite runs involve running around inside geometry and skipping about out-of-bounds. I am sure it rquires reaction-time and finesse but it doesn't really provide a bunch of spectacle.
