If I went to a GDQ I would be ResidentSleeper in the crowd-cam because while the extra stuff going on at the event sounds good, I would be there exclusive for runs
My timezone means I see all the weird, janky late-night stuff and there's no way I'd miss that in person. I see things like the Nex Machina run without a couch and I'd be like, dude! Don't even give me a mic, I wanna be on there to support you doing something wild with a videogame!
starting to catch up on some of the runs i missed, starting with the Celeste TAS and cracking up as TAS keeps quitting out of the game instead of starting the run.

I'm very torn about AGDQ 2020. The venue is only a 20 or so minute drive away, and I'd very much like to go, but I also kind of prefer being able to watch runs from the comfort of my own home?
They’re doing it at the OCC? Damn I kinda wanna go
I don't think they've named an exact venue yet, but it is in Orlando, yeah
The NES Legend of Zelda randomizer race was great!
Most rando runs are a lot more punishing, especially since randomized dungeon locations and layouts are popular. This race was specifically seeded to be marathon friendly, as well as a showcase of what a randomizer can do.

This is a small update but all the final tally work has been done, and the final amount has about $30k more than at the time of the event ending (last minute donations / Twitch chat contributions and such).
I've been rewatching the finale run and it's really funny how people donated a LOT of money toward hitting a new GDQ record, but they kept forgetting to put it toward the Spekkio Fight incentive. And the couch even gave EXPLICIT instructions on how to be able to do that. XD

And the *ahem* supplementry menuing providing coincidently juuuuust enough time to meet the incentive haha

I did some reading tonight about Diablo 2 speedruns and what they entail, and really they're easier than I thought; most of the setup / details are handled in Act 1, and for the most part it's just rushing to the end of each chapter after that (without going over level 20). I gave each class a look over to see what they do skill-wise. Paladins use Holy Fire at the start for their damage output, and hey if you can get a good Scepter with +holy fire then all the better.
Anyway about an hour or so ago I started a new casual Paladin and my first drop was literally a Scepter with +3 Holy Fire and now I'm ripping ass all over the game.
I might consider taking it up as a speedrun, though not every class. Some of them require more finicky play and that shit will really hurt my wrist. The Paladin though is like... use Charge to get around, then Hammer the important stuff like bosses.

What’s bad about hitting level 20?

It's not necessarily bad to go over. The goal is to hit level 20 during the Chaos Sanctuary (end of Act 4), because the Ancients quest in Act 5 to get into Baal's dungeon requires being level 20 (and it will itself reward you with +1 level). It's an optimization thing; don't hang around / grind too much.
Edit - Just to get into the details, this is all about speedruns and saving frames. Literally even. They have detailed info about Hit Recovery frames, movement speed, etc.
I've been trying to come up with a game I'd like to put time into learning to speedrun, something relatively short, but I haven't hit on anything I like enough and consider interesting enough to do anything with.
Or in the case of some games, knowing I 100% don't have the skill/dexterity to pull off. Like I would looove to speedrun Hollow Knight, but I can already feel my hands falling off trying to do it.

I'd choose a game that you're already really good at, that way the learning curve for the speedrun isn't so large. Length of game is less the issue and more your comprehension of it, I think.

Length is more of an attention span/frustration thing for me. I'm much less likely to get annoyed and just quit at having to restart a run for an hour-ish long game than I would be for like, a 5-hour RPG run (which would be my first instinct in terms of games I've played a lot of and have the most experience with).
But then those shorter games tend to be much more skill-based (Hollow Knight, Dark Souls, DMC) and while I like those games I'm also Very Bad at them.
Maybe I'll just find a bunch of terrible PS2 games I can break and beat in 20 minutes and become a dedicated Awful Games runner.
Do you want a game you can speedrun competitively, or just to see how fast you can go?
I'm nowhere near the LttP leaderboards, but I enjoy playing it enough that I'm happy setting my own PBs.

mostly just for the personal challenge of it
LttP seems like a solid choice, not crazy complicated in terms of general difficulty and looots of resources for speedrunning
Yeah I'm going through RE4 and I was like "I Should really speed run this game" and then I died and restarted on the lake monster fight like 8 times lol. I'm just not good enough at games to do it.
Speed running is really deceptive because there's the entire montage before each game that you don't see.
Runners are GDQ will regularly comment on spending thousands of hours of gameplay time to figure out a game like its no thing. At that point it's not really as much about skill, as it is about the ability to recall muscle memory.

It's totally about skill. What is skill if not the result of practice?

I will say that a lot of speed runner tactics actually make hard bosses way easier.

I'm saying that 'I'm not good enough at video games to be a speed runner' is a misnomer of the term.

Really that you don’t need to be specifically talented at bideo games to speed run them.
Most anyone can develop the skills.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Speedrun anything with turn based combat, like Pokémon Blue
Not much 'manual skill' (reflexes etc.) involved in something like that
jRPG speedruns require checklists and specific movement counts and such. You're literally following a script when playing them. There's been a lot of GDQ runs of jRPGs where the runner or someone on the couch literally had the notes on hand, you can see it on camera.
That's a genre that's daunting to run, imo.

That is why I appreciate those more. Especially when you consider they need to have alternate plans for the various aspects that can change. Not all of those games have RNG manipulation to get through rough spots. Sometimes you either need to have lots of backup plans, or just know the game so well you can think on your feet.

Also some of those games (like the Pokemon ones) require one frame inputs.

I remember playing The Messenger and I started to have some trouble on a boss
I thought
What would a speedrunner do
So I just knelt in front of him and kept wailing and ignored any damage he was doing to me instead of trying to dodge his shit and wail on him when I could.
It worked like aces.

Oh another thing to consider is the category. Sometimes it might be easier to start out doing a 100% run, to ease up on the difficulty of wrapping the game up. As you do it more and more for the one game, you might be able to move on to any% or other categories.
As a low profile example, I became a mini-speedrunner to get the S ranks in the Resident Evil 1/2 remakes.
I started off by taking notes of puzzle answers, lock combinations, etc.
Then I figured out all the things I have to do in a run, cut out the ones I can afford to miss (don't need the Magnum? That's a dozen items I don't need to pick up), and keep track of inventory so I don't end up unable to pick up a key item. Finish that off with target times for when I make saves so I can stay on schedule.
I ended up coming in half an hour ahead of my target time, which felt good until I watched the proper speedruns that found things I'd never considered (Claire moves faster in Caution? That's cruel).
tl;dr: RE is a good game to get into speedrunning. Especially because you get game rewards for doing so, so even more incentive when you're starting!

the lvl 20 thing was even part of just rushing people thru d2 because it maximized the reward from the ancients.
There is a game I have put a lot of thought into speed running but it is hard to find the time. Between work and my family, plus playing other games, don't know where I can squeeze it in.
Barrier Skip now doable on the Gamecube in addition to the HD remake. So I imagine we'll be seeing that at AGDQ?

That's awesome, but I disagree that we'll see it at AGDQ. Other things would have to be done to make Wind Waker (the original release) faster or substantially different.

I don't run the game, but judging from various videos Super Swim works in the original as well.

We end up talking about Speedruns so much in this thread that I figure we should let it sleep between events and have a separate thread. Besides there's non-GDQ events going on in speedrunning!
@Sterica would it be possible to pop [Speedruns] into the thread title? Just to cover all the bases
Cross-postage: ZFG is running a modded version of Ocarina of Time called Faster Quest (100%). It chops down all the cutscenes and text boxes, puts in quality of life improvements like 1st try Dampe etc. It transforms the game because there really is no downtime no; it's strats from start to finish. I mean, he just got the master sword in under 13 mins for goodness sake that's obscene. Well worth a watch as he's almost cracked the 3 hour (!!) mark
