My husband and I are gonna take a break from drinking for the rest of January.

Health benefits, yes, but honestly we're gonna save a lot of money. IPAs are expensive.

The only time I ever got an @ was for the terrible newspaper comics I used to post in the webcomics thread. That's actually worse than not being mentioned.

What’s the point of being pandered to if it doesn’t come with any practical benefits?
    shryke wrote: »
In the spirit of "enjoying the ride", American farmers everyone:
American farmers, already hit by low commodity prices and China's punitive trade tariffs, are poised to endure further pain in 2019 now that a major Pacific trade deal has come into effect.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP, was ratified by seven of its member countries on Sunday. Now that the massive free trade pact is a reality for Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore and Vietnam, the remaining four members — Brunei, Chile, Malaysia and Peru — are soon expected to follow suit.

The milestone agreement, a refurbished version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, will slash tariffs among the 11 nations that cover 14 percent of global growth, making their exports cheaper in each other's markets. Around 90 percent of planned tariff cuts will be immediately take place, HSBC said in a note on Sunday, adding that businesses will benefit from reduced administrative costs thanks to other benefits such as pre-arrival customs clearance.
Japan is a prime example. The Asian giant is the top market for U.S. beef, but Australia's products could now take over America's spot since foreign beef tariffs in Japan will be cut by 27.5 percent for Australian producers under the CPTPP, The National Cattlemen's Beef Association has warned.

"The US beef industry is at risk of losing significant market share in Japan
unless immediate action is taken to level the playing field," Kevin Kester, the association's president, said in a statement earlier this month.

It's a similar story for American wheat.

Thanks to CPTPP, Canadian and Australian wheat exports to Japan now immediately benefit from a 7 percent drop in the Japanese government's mark-up price, which will become a 12 percent reduction in April, U.S. Wheat Associates President Vince Peterson said in a recent statement. By April, American wheat will face a $14 per metric ton resale price disadvantage to Australia and Canada, he warned, adding that his industry faces "imminent collapse" in Japan.
    https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/31/cptpp-american-farmers-set-for-pain-as-pacific-trade-deal-kicks-in.html

The TLDR is that Trump pulled out of the TPP, everyone else went forward with it without you and now american farmers, between tariffs and a lack of being in the deal, are quite a bit less competitive and look poised to lose a good chunk of marketshare. Which will be hard to get back even if the US figures out some way to fix the issue eventually.

Or, basically, Trump yet again fucked the agricultural sector. This is becoming a very painful pattern.

Good news for Canadian farmers though, so woo!
I'm still grappling with the idea that a metric ton of wheat only costs $200.

I feel like I am paying way too much for bread...

Buy a tonne of wheat, haul it away in your car, and grind it to flour yourself?

    That's crazy-talk, @CelestialBadger , I'd be taking a huge bath on the labor.

Hypothetically, though, how much flour do you think a 5 year old grind in a day?

    Legally speaking.

You guys sound like you're in the market for a half ton of wheat!

That reminds me, when I walked into a Macy's with my mom she saw all the Pusheen merch and was like "oh! It's Totoro!" (...wut....) and I had to explain to her who Pusheen was:

    "So pusheen is a kyara" ( @simonwolf )
    "A what?"
"Like, a mascot character? Like you know how Hello Kitty is this character and her main deal is that she's a character--"
"And she's not in any game or show"
"Well, she is in games and shows cause she's a whole media franchise thing which we are not going to get into here but yeah the concept of a character-centered thing, except instead of being form Sanrio, Pusheen is from an american webcomic artist"
    "She's really cute!"
"Yeah honestly this merch is some of the least cute pusheen merch and normally it's even cuter..."

I still don't own any pusheen-branded items, but some day perhaps.

I feel like I cheat if I do this stuff.

I don't drink unless in a social situation. And then I drink very little. Booze sets off Crohns in large amounts.

I don't drink soda or eat a lot of processed food. My bad cheat snack is air popped popcorn.

I am basically by habit kind of a semi-healthy person?

Its mostly out of my own laziness and my hatred of going places once I get home from work and I tend to head home to walk the dog.

I do think last year I may have finally hit double digits in ordered food here? Took a while to do that.

I do drink occasionally some fizzy water stuff from trader joe's I like. It isn't 0 calories, it is 10 calories because it has a drop of orange juice in it.

My drunk calories are the milk and sugar in my coffee in the morning. So that is half a serving of milk and about a tsp of sugar. I can afford that.

On a whim I decided to try some dried chickpeas even though historically I’ve found garbanzos to be unpleasant-tasting.

This may be because I’ve mostly ever known them as an ingredient in gross three-bean salads my mother used to make me eat as a kid.

Anyway these ones are good. They are dipped in chocolate and have some chai flavor as well.

In an effort to be a bit more healthy and environmentally conscious, we've taken to doing 1 meatless dinner a week. This week so far has been 2 meatless meals, but this is mostly due to my sister (vegan) being in town for the next two weeks.

In addition, I've also tried to reduce my plastic bag usage by a bunch. Usually when I would go to grocery stores, I would put every vegetable/fruit in a plastic bag. Now they all go into the basket and I usually bring bags with me for checkout. Sometimes I'll get paper and use those to put our recycling at home in.

I try to only eat meat once a day at most. And usually it is chicken or turkey or some sort of bird. I fell off that for a bit by eating maybe twice a day. Going back to it. If anything it just saves money.

    Um... hey everyone.

I'm Ath, or Myridiam in my Wow / freeform online roleplaying days. He/him, cis, white, male, hetero... I tend to define my life by the fact I've never been on a date or kissed anyone, which means I'm under constant pressure from the family to mate...

I tend to think of myself as background noise on my bad days, someone who has been around the forums for a long time but is a little more than a lurker. I find my posts tend not to get much notice, and I don't like making posts just to make noise. Part of that is because I also know that if I'm overly enthusiastic, it tends to rub people the wrong way. And.. more than anything, I don't want to upset people. Which is a problem when I over-apologize or speak about things I don't know about.

On my good days, I'm a 36 year old English major who works as a systems administrator for a major state university, and is considered one of the most valuable employees in the department. I'm often turned to for advice and leadership, and have taken it upon myself to set a good example for everyone else... and it seems to be working. My biggest accomplishment has been starting a book club where us techs can discuss ideas and collectively improve.

Mostly I just... get by. Many of my friends have moved away, and I'm not that great at making new ones, so I find myself... just not socializing as much as I'd like. I have an unhealthy addiction to YouTube, including watching randomized Link to the Past runs for the last few weeks. I would give anything to be able to watch that kind of stuff while on a treadmill of something, but I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment and I'm already worried I am annoying as a 460+ lbs white man tromping around...

I actually apologized to my mail carrier once for ordering too much stuff on Amazon that needed to be delivered up to my 3rd floor apartment. I also find myself way too fixated on awesomes/agrees, and what people will think of giving them, getting them, so on and so forth.

    I also tend to overshare.

I understand it to mean empty wordplay and knee-jerk reactions, especially stuff you don't have a strong genuine feeling for... a stronger term for posting stuff that doesn't reflect anything about you or your thoughts

    idk if that's correct tho

On topic, I'm sick and I got back from my New Year's Day Tea invitation. It was nice and I liked the tea and now the host wants to play board games while he's furloughed. I saw a real cool friend I never see anymore and his less cool wife and they told me some former friends of mine are divorcing :(

re: giving up beer or pop or whatever

It's funny going over to my brother's place cause him and his wife are totally the kind of people who will come home from work and pop open some beers and have a drink with dinner and whatever. And I know a bunch of people like that. And some peeps I know online, most of them hopefully having stopped by now, seemed to drink pop like it was water.

And then, like, me and my wife like beer. A lot. But it would just never occur to us to do that. We drink at like parties or when going out or whatever but at home we literally just never think of doing that and beer sits untouched in our fridge from one gathering at our place to the next.

We have pop but it's basically like a specialty drink for us. I buy "fancy" ones and we split one over meals like pizza where something fizzy feels obligatory.

Other then that she subsists on coffee and tea and I just drink tap water all day.

I'm not sure I could ever give it up but I end up drinking so little it hardly seems to matter.

I gotta take up curling again as a way to drink more though.

The trade with Russia in the northern ports of Japan (esp. Hokkaido and northern Tohoku) is a part of history that is less well known compared to the other trade countries but had an interesting impact on Japan

There's several Russian words that entered the Japanese language as default for certain things, like "kachusha" (Katyusha) for hairbands, and there was a relatively major influx/conversion to the Orthodox faith in those regions in the late 1800s
