Yeah, there's basically nothing that would stop them if he has an ethics clause. Maybe Friday? Bury it over the weekend news cycle.

Okay so, thanks y'all so much for your advice and discussion

After reading this stuff and talking it over with the DM (aka (borat voice) my wife) I'm going to go with Swashbuckler Rogue to start with

At the end of the day it genuinely felt like it came down to Pirate vs Ninja, and I'll only ever take one side in that dead horse of a debate

I guess the other factions I'd go for is some sort of Ork, maybe the imperial guard, and... I dunno. Most of my experience comes from the video games, and they don't spend a lot of time covering any factions other than the SPACE MARINES. I am very sick of space marines.

we had some absolutely incredible games of their guard + big tanks trying desperately to shoot all my tyranids before they got to them and just ate everything instantly

some ridiculous stuff like an immortal broodlord shrugging off a shitload of heavy arms fire and shredding an entire HQ squad, or like 2 lone commandoes taking out a group of Tyranid Warriors with wild luck and guile

thinking about those games makes me miss playing WH40K, but not enough to sink $texas into it again

So my players' D&D characters are 11th-level and last session waltzed into the middle of a demon-worshiping kuo-toa village that has ghast allies. I'm curious to see how much of a challenge I can make a bunch of low-CR enemies be for my players.

    Here's what I'm thinking:

Ghast ×2: Their stench could possibly inflict disadvantage on attack rolls.
Kuo-Toa ×8: They mostly try to contain the party with a combination of nets and sticky shields.
Kuo-Toa Whip ×4: Cast Bane to debilitate PCs and Shield of Faith to raise AC. Use pincer staves from behind Kuo-Toas to try and grapple PCs already in nets and drag them into a position to be surrounded.
Kuo-Toa Archpriest: Casts Spirit Guardians from behind allies, following it up with Spiritual Weapon and Mass Cure Wounds. If things look dicey for her she swims away and casts Control Water to make it harder for the party to pursue.

They also worship a wastrilith that is watching close-by and directing them telepathically. Its corrupt water trait makes the battlefield (which is a mix of deep and knee-high water) difficult terrain for the PCs. It only attacks flying PCs.

Hmm ok so my characters are going to prison for a bit. separated into mens and women's side. Both the ladies have backstory stuff in the prison, one has a childhood friend who was falsely accused and tossed in and turns out his blood is being stolen to power a profane ritual by someone inside the prison. The other had her family disgraced when a con man stole an heirloom. He is also in the prison.

So, the guys are going to have to deal with a potential gang fight because of past actions, and will need to smuggle some goods and sell them to a fence that will turn out to be the con man, and the ladies are going to be working to uncover the conspiracy that the warden is doing magical experiments on prisoners and turning them into flesh golems. Other then that, what kinds of prison mischief can I have them getting up to?

Well, an overly complicated break out plan for starters.

And maybe prove that other person's innocence.

And stab someone in the toilets with a shiv. Probably a performance check on how well you carve the shiv too.

I have my next game tomorrow. We're robbing a train. The party is split, with me and Ulrika (the hacker) waiting at the train station with a group of my criminal contacts who are going to handle the muscle side of things in exchange for taking everything off the train except what we need. Elizabeth Wonder and Dr Charlotte Lamb are getting on the train before it leaves Portland, and are going to do their best to run interference, get recon etc. There are six guards, who are of unknown levels of undeaditude. The train team has a lot of Dominate, a lot of stealth and whatever bullshit Elizabeth Wonder has on the character sheet that I'm not allowed to look at even though I'm the producer.

On our end, I can throw down and have a big dog, we have (supposedly) five humans with shotguns and rifles showing up. We might put Ulrika in a sniper perch and see if we can prepare any environmental bullshit. Maybe blind them with floodlights (since I can see in infrared), see if I can bring any bears along etc. We'll have to control the train yard itself somehow too, I'm sure there'll be security and employees there.

Is it really a prison sequence if you don't incite/participate in at least one riot?

Well they have friends on the outside working to prove their innocence...but I bet I could change some stuff to prove the prison warden is in cahoots with the corrupt judge who sentenced them and they were working with the guy they were put on trial for killing....but they have to break out to get the evidence to the right people and then break back in

In the VTM game we played in college our ST allowed one of our characters (a Brujah maybe? I don't remember most of the ins and outs of the clans) to have an additional shapeshift form of a penguin. Just sort of as a joke, it had terrible stats.

But it still existed, and was sized like a penguin, so it had the unintended consequence of allowing one of our main combat tactics to be having the other strength character throw the penguin at an unsuspecting enemy and have it transform into a bear mid flight.

This is definitely something you can do within the rules but is not a very good use of xp.

Right now with Protean (that power) your third dot gets you an animal form roughly the same size as you (I dunno, fudge 50lbs or whatever) such as a wolf and the fourth dot gets you a form that can be a different size (e.g a gorilla, but normally a bird because you know, flight is useful). Those used to be in the same power, but less flexible (it was always a wolf and a bat) and honestly, that was a way better power and much better designed because they could say "hey here's what being a wolf gets you" rather than gesturing vaguely at a bafflingly incomplete bestiary.

Right now Protean is honestly pretty bad because its powers don't scale at all and scalable powers kick absolute ass in V5, as I outlined yesterday.

Like if you take the fifth level power in Protean you can turn into mist which cool, I guess, cool. People can't kill you good, I guess you can go under doors and shit. Neat.

If you take the fifth level of Fortitude you can ignore the first source of damage every turn, then remove five damage points from each source after that, have five extra health levels and can also provide all of those benefits to your animal companion at will. Animal Companion is a "one dot dip", as they say, and can be anything from a gorilla to a startlingly durable pigeon.

I think you should get both a fight and a flight at three dots, a "be a big moop like a gorilla or some shit" at four and have the ability to buy new forms for like 5 xp.

I like how flexible it is, but the system isn't set up for that flexibility so if you're like "cool! what does turning into a bear mean for me?" the corebook just sort of shrugs.

No, but animalism + obfuscate lets you have a swarm as your animal companion and keep it inside your body.
