I’m seeing stuff that Trump is due to give a live press conference offering “remarks” on the shutdown at 1:30pm EST today? I’ve got a Twitter link to a live broadcast from Euronews, a European public broadcast news service, but so far its just video of lots of reporters waiting around in the rose garden.

He is running 30 minutes late.

I looked at Fox they are at least on the website not calling him caving and say its a deal. So who knows if he is rescinding or not.

Honestly if a two or three week deal is the best the government can do, workers should continue to strike anyway. Because that's a hot load of shit.

Nobody is striking, and they will continue to not be striking for the foreseeable future, as striking is cause for immediate termination, and I believe giving up any residual benefits.

The Flight Attendants Union is talking about striking. And they are not Federal employees.

Yeah, Flight Attendants Union isn't allowed to strike without first going through arbitration, because it is considered a necessary position.

Remember when I said payday lenders would be doing gangbusters business during the shutdown? Well...

    Bloomberg is a news service.

I'd call them vultures, but vultures actually fill a useful role in the food chain.

Unsurprisingly the payday loan joints are provided obscene amounts of financial backing from major banks like Wells Fargo.

It doesn't change the designation of vulture; but when there's an image of them being small time crooks, they're being funded by the banks who happily fuck everything up and then take all the monies from the government.

So when Wilbur Ross says take out a loan, options are going to be 1) mortgage/equity if you own a home, both bad ideas 2) personal loans, which are typically unsecured and have higher interest rates 3) credit card debt, with obscene interest rates on cash withdraws or 4) payday loans with criminal interest rates.

In every situation his suggestion is to enrich banks at a hefty cost to the individual with zero benefit, because of a situation caused by an incompetent businessman who was propped up and supported by the same banks and assholes who will still benefit from all of this.

As has been pointed out, whenever the question of "why aren't businesses saying something?"; why would they? At worst they lose a tiny bit of business if people can't afford their services, but ultimately they will still have those peoples money later, if not already from aforementioned loans/credit cards. And maybe they'll gain more poverty level workers to exploit. Plus, I would suspect that after all this is done, there will be some narrative put forth by conservatives that in order to prevent this happening again more things the government does needs to be privatized, which benefits businesses. on the financial end, there's a misconception that the financial industry fears market drops; the people with the funding like them because it allows them to buy up more, at cheaper, and control more when things inevitably recover. There's some evidence that the great depression was, at least in part, triggered by actions of the wealthy, who dove in after the crash and bought everything; similar things have occurred during major recessions since, even including 2008.

From a corporate perspective, there is little to speak up about. Even airlines, I would bet money I don't have that they'll push hard (and successfully) for either flat recompense for the effects of the shutdown, or more tax breaks and incentives as "restitution". And, you know they're going to hike ticket prices and point at lost revenue during the groundings as an excuse; and at minimum recover any losses from that.

    Exactly what we don't want:

Fox’s John Roberts on the reported deal to re-open the government without border wall funding: “It’s difficult to see this as anything but the president giving in to Democrats on Capitol Hill”
Bobby Lewis is a researcher for Media Matters For America.

MMFA senior fellow Matt Gertz makes the point:

That thing where you can't rule out that the whole deal goes up in smoke because the president was watching Fox News and freaked out at criticism.

If Trump got the GOP to all agree to reopen the government and then changes his mind because of FOX News I think that might be the last straw for some of them

Honestly, Pelosi seems to have him down to a T. She knows that he can’t control himself. She just makes a simple comment or suggestion or does something small, and he instantly overreacts, without any long term plan or any strategy to make himself look like the winner. She knew that all she had to do was wait and that he had literally no other plan for how to get himself out of the shutdown other than for her to give in for some reason.

Would another shutdown really go the way this one went? Just shut down air travel day 1 and the government caves, that's the way out in the future. There is nothing the President can do to disarm aviation workers from exercising their power that way. Just massive walkouts everytime they are "working without pay" or there is a huge furlough.

I think if nothing else democrats should pass some bills to not make it illegal for federal employees to strike during a shutdown. I think this stuff would end pretty fast if the people not getting paid could safely strike to protest not being paid.

Democrats won’t oppose a CR because they are excited to get to step two in these negotiations

    Step one:

Trump: *shuts down the government* “I want a wall”
Democrats: “Reopen the government and then we’ll talk”

    Step two:

Trump: *re-opens the government* “I want a wall”
