I mean, I've taken it in for oil changes and regular maintenance for stuff like that. I believe I was told that the suspension could use replacing soon, though.
So I didn't plan on buying a car today, and certainly not a Jeep, but...
There was a dealership offering $10k off MSRP on Jeep Renegades thanks to that inventory allocation issue I posted about earlier in the thread, bringing the cost down to about $14,000 out the door for a brand new car. And since I had put 110,000 miles on my Elantra GT in the last 3.5 years, it was getting worse for the wear, and they would take it on trade.
So now I own a brand new 2019 Jeep Renegade.

God though, I'm just waiting for them to finish up the paperwork (it is SLAMMED at this dealership) and I'm surrounded by Hellcats and Trackhawks and they are glorious. I really like the way the supercharged Hemi looks, it's not exactly an artful or beautiful piece of machinery, but it really looks like it was built for a purpose, and that purpose is turning fuel into sound and fury.
The SoCal street racing scene is wild on Saturday nights. I was taking the 91 east heading into Anahiem on the way back from the dealership and there was a cop that got up onto the freeway with his lights on, stopped at the top of the off-ramp, then later sped up and passed me much more quickly than the flow of traffic, which seemed odd. Then, about 2 minutes later as I'm approaching the highways 91/90/55 interchange, a pair of Camaros and a Challenger Hellcat come SCREAMING up from behind me (hard to really estimate but easily 130mph+, likely closer to 160mph) followed by 6 or 7 police with their lights and sirens blaring.
Each of the cars took a different freeway at the interchange and the cops had to scramble to decide which to follow, it was like something out of a movie. Luckily this was at about 12:45AM so the highways were fairly light on traffic, so it was only highly dangerous and not incredibly dangerous.

Car and Driver's Tesla Model 3 long-term tester with just over 5,000 miles on the odometer suffered a major failure while parked, and the person driving it was notified via the Tesla phone app while at a family Christmas gathering. Tesla got a truck to them in half an hour on Christmas day, which is cool, but then the car had to travel an hour into Ohio because Michigan doesn't allow Tesla to run company-owned service centers. It's still in the shop now.
The frustrating thing with the Fit is that... I have taken it to MULTIPLE mechanics over the years. They've never been able to determine what the problem is.
Part of the problem is since it only happens when first starting it, if I can make it to a mechanic, the problem is typically gone. So it's currently at the Honda Repair office, just sitting for a few days so they can start it and start going immediately, and hopefully they'll be able to determine what the deal is.
If not... Well, I guess we'll look into a new car. Because goddamn I'm not driving that thing around if the battery can just die with no warning.
Yeah seems a lot of people complain about the battery in the fit. One guy was saying he couldn’t figure it out for about 6 months and it turned out the light in the glove compartment wasn’t shutting off lol
That sucks though, sometimes trying to figure out these issues is the worst and shops seem to always hate issues like this where proper investigation is needed.
Is there a way to check if there is draw on the battery with the car turned off? Just to see if something is still possibly draining it?

Yes there is, and any mechanic worth a shit should have done that.
All I want is to just, like, know what the deal is. Is it expensive to fix? Then maybe I can think about getting a replacement car instead. Cheap? Go ahead and fix it!
But just, like, not KNOWING what the issue is, that's the maddening part. And adding the battery just being completely drained, well, that's super worrying.
Do you keep a USB car charger plugged in all the time? Some models will continuously draw power from the battery even when the car is off. I made the mistake of leaving a cable plugged into mine for 15 hours yesterday and my car begrudgingly started when had to drive home. The hour drive home charged the battery back up but it was lesson learned.

Huh, I do in fact do that. That could be part of it? But granted I've done that for years and the battery's never been completely dead like it was last Thursday.
Oh, well, the battery in the car NOW is brand new. Bought it last week and replaced it.
The battery in it previously was probably... 3 or 4 years old? Fairly recent I know, but IIRC it was also a pretty cheap one.

I mean, if they tested the alternator and it's not charging the battery, that's problem #1, no doubt about it. If it's been failing for a while, the battery itself might not be in the best condition either, but they should check it after fitting the new alternator and running the engine for a while to make sure the alternator is in fact charging the battery, ideally they'd then do a load test on the battery.
If you're considering trading the Fit in for something else take a good look at the KBB value of the car, what kind of money you need to put into it to keep it reliable, and what you can budget for a new/used car. The longer you keep the Fit and the more money out put into repairs the less money it'll be worth for trade in, and how much less money you'll have on hand towards a loan or full cash payment for a new car. At a certain point a car just isn't worth putting money into. That's not to say your Fit is at the point but it's something to keep in mind.
I did a bit of searching and it seems Fit battery drain is a near constant issue people have. There doesn't seem to be any consistent solution beyond just buying new batteries or having it hooked up to a tender at every night. There is consensus on the battery is extremely small and doesn't hold up well lots of short trips, accessories being used when the car is in accessory mode, drain from USB chargers, cold temperatures, and a bad batch of batteries in 2008-2009. There are also people who haven't had any issues, but it's also an ongoing issue even with the current generation Fit. So yeah WTF Honda?
It sounds as if, now it has a new battery, that if Mori remembers to unplug any usb devices/accessories and makes sure that the car warms up in the morning that it might be okay for at least a year or two? We’d really rather not have to buy now (although the thought of a new car is highly tempting - soon, soon!)
A trickle charger plugged in overnight could also bring piece of mind if you wanted to go down that route, a nice one from CTEK or similar will come with a little wire you can leave permanently attached to your battery terminals so it would just be a matter of plugging a single wire in when you get home.

I should maybe be a bit clearer about the cold thing. I meant it in so far as cold temperatures can affect the charge capacity of batteries, but I don't imagine you live where's it's, let's say, sub-zero on a regular basis where the colds' effects on batteries would be a real concern. That's not to say getting into a wonderful warm car before driving to or from work wouldn't feel great. I don't think starting the car and letting it warm up is necessary. Putting a battery tender on the car would be the main thing to do for now. If you're still having issues with the car on a trickle charger then it's time to find a mechanic with a very patient tech who's good with car electrical systems to really delve into what cause of the problem is.
Alternatively, you can connect a quick disconnect to the battery and just flip it open when the car is turned off. We use them at work frequently since development cars often have faulty electrical systems.
Edit:
Something like this, takes about 2 min to install.
Well, they were able to replicate the issue, at least, so that's something. Unfortunately this means that I don't get the car until Thursday at least. Boo.

See, I have to let my car warm up beforehand, otherwise it stalls if I just try to get going.
I will probably try the trickle charger though.
Sounds like an issue with a temperature sensor somewhere not telling the ECU to use the cold start map.

Finally checking out those overproduction deals. A Challenger R/T for the MSRP of an SXT is mighty tempting...
god, I could even spring for the scat pack Charger. Car thread, does a hundred extra horsepower actually do anything? And as a young bachelor would I regret going for the coupe over a 4-door?

The extra power in the Scat Pack makes the Charger/Challenger feel a bit lighter than their curb weight, 485hp ain't nothin' to sneeze at. You also get some other improvements to the brakes and suspension that give the car less of a boaty muscle car feel, pushes it further into GT territory.
Also the Apache V8 makes some of the dirtiest sounds in all of automotive history and that alone is worth the price of admission IMO.

1: yes.
2: no, not at all.
I've got a 6 year old and a 2+2 gt86. You just have to get them used to taking their shoes off in the back if it's been raining / muddy

I mean, "The Escape Goat" specified 'young bachelor', which, get yourself a fucking sweet coupe while you can and never sell it, if you end up married with kids get the minivan but do not sell your coupe.

Yep. And you hang on to that thing for dear life.
Teach your kids to drive in the minivan, take them to prom in the coupe. Once a month you peel off the car cover, disconnect the battery tender, and take the better half out for dinner in the coupe. Every so often you get busted by local police at the makeout spot while you and your partner are getting hot and heavy in the back seat, even in middle age and beyond.
You do not sell that coupe.
Can you tell I miss my S14?

I had a 65 Mustang growing up. I miss the shit out of that car still. It was perfect.
If you need some sort of reason beyond "I just like it" to get the scat pack, think about how well the upgraded engine will hold it's value in the future.
But you definitely shouldn't sell it, until you're literally too old to drive it.
I've become quite endeared to my little Jeep over the first few days of ownership, but I can't help but feel that it would have been better served by being paired with a little turbodiesel engine.
Not that I really dislike the 2.4L gas engine it has, it's certainly fine, but like a 2.0L turbodiesel would boost its fuel efficiency and the low-end grunt would pair well with its chonky looks.

Oh great, intermittent electrical faults, the most annoying thing to diagnose. It's almost always a bad earth, but finding it is miserable drudgery.
