I'm just surprised base Goku and Vegeta wasn't there by default.

After a certain point base Goku kind of just stops being a thing, and 90% of fights are as some variant of Super Saiyan. I want to say this began in late DBZ? The big fights have been Super Saiyan-only since Frieza, though, with base-level Goku usually signifying weakness.

In most other DBZ fighters they'd be there by default since IIRC they tend to go for a "power up to Super Saiyan" thing, but since DBFZ decided to make each transformation a distinct character that didn't happen.

On the one hand this means that base DBFZ just has Super Saiyan Goku and an unlockable Super Saiyan Blue Goku, but on the other hand this means that each season of DLC had at least one Goku in it.

But base level Goku features very prominently in Super. It's his default start to a fight and Super Saiyan only comes out once it's clear it's not enough.

I miss the easy-as-breathing Super Saiyan state from the end of the Cell saga. That was a neat direction to take things, and it led to krillin hitting Goku with a rock.

And the reason adult Gohan isn't Super Saiyan in the game is that as part of his Z-Sword training, he supposedly reached a level more powerful than Super Saiyan that was.. I dunno, incompatible with turning SS.

Which we never got to see because Gohan then got immediately eaten by Buu and didn't fight again in Z.

He says in Super during the ToP that he chose to grow in a way that is focused more on his human side than the saiyan side, so Super Saiyan is a downgrade for him

He then gets jobbed almost immediately in the manga

His training prior to the TOP got him to unlock his clear-mode mystic stuff again. He went fairly far with it in the anime version.

I’m not sure what the “essence of a super Saiyan” line means when he uses his unlock potential move in Fighterz, though. I feel like there’s an explanation in the anime that I flossed over.

The ritual unlocked his full potential. My understanding was that his full absolute potential was available at all times, the same kind of potential that Super Saiyan serves as an unlock for was already unlocked, so turning Super Saiyan would literally just be changing his hair colour because he's already using that power.

So how exactly did they justify 21's existence in DBFZ? Gero died, his lab was destroyed, and everything about him was buried under rock long before Buu ever showed up.

Honestly on top of being terrible to play, nothing about DBFZ’s story mode makes any sense.

I think the 3 arcs are meant to be separate what-ifs detailing what happens if the soul ends up in Goku, Frieza or 18 but even that is nowhere near clear at this point.

What's weird is that the Super Warriors arc ends with Whis going "hey, maybe you still have some stuff to do to find out the whole truth?" but the stories never link up in a manner that that suggests.

Definitely seems like they should’ve had a few more androids before they ran out of ideas enough to just have one be a guy wearing a trucker hat.

started reading some of the recent manga stuff and man, the end of the Tournament seems significantly less exciting than the anime, though I do like that Vegeta's still in it 'til pretty much the very end

the Moro stuff though, is real good shit

I had no idea that the chapters were so substantial too, kinda seems like every manga should do the once a month 40 pages thing! it's probably a much more livable schedule and every entry feels significant

    Hello have you heard of

    American comic books

(I agree the manga schedule is super grueling to creators and needs to be reevaluated but the weekly installments and cheap price is absolutely a major reason Manga had such strong retention in readers vs. American comics)

I like the callback in Dragonball Z Abridged where 17 is talking to Gero about bad android designs and mockingly goes "Howdy there, I'm Android 13. Look at my trucker hat."

Then later when they did the Android 13 movie, that's the exact line that 13 introduces himself with.

Sounds like the way Lannie explained it the problem was that the villains are mostly separate from the heroes for more of the movie limiting what fun character beats they could work with.

They probably found that in order to create a coherent narrative they would have to cut almost the entirety of the film. Also most of the plot in Bojack Unbound is either retread or repeated in the Buu Saga. A martial arts tournament where the winner faces champion Mister Satan, Gohan witnessing his friends all eat shit before going Super Saiyin, Piccolo taking a shot for Gohan, the villain going "fuck it I'll just blow everything up," Gohan collapsing on the ground after firing a Super Kamehameha, and the movie ends on almost the same shot as Super 17.

I feel like that's all ground they've covered or will be covering in the new season.

From their own reddit on Bojack:
    Kaiserneko wrote:
As such, we struggled to find a way to change the movie up or even lampoon it, and constantly just... felt like we were rewriting the scenes to be slightly funnier. It kept happening, where we'd drudge ourselves through a scene just to find ourselves, "It's good enough" or "We'll go back later and maybe we'll have something better".

Which sucks, because every time we felt like we had a truly solid idea, we'd find it untenable due to the constraints of the footage. The last time we'd felt so stifled was Broly, but we spent almost twice the amount of time on the Bojack script and could only figure out the first 2/5 before we realized... we were miserable.
