Hbomberguy's Donkey Kong 64 Charity Nightmare for Mermaids
Look, AOC drives them clicks, gotta up those metrics

What news outlet source is that specifically? I went to Google News just now and scrolled for a bit and got nothing about her and the charity stream. When I ran a search for her name, an article showed up from comicbook dot com and it doesn't credit her as raising the money so?

So, I can't and would never want to speak for any trans or QUILTBAG person
but I feel like it's a good thing that so much of the stream is just trans people talking and telling their stories as hbomberguy plays this awful game
right?
I'd say it's generally a good thing that as the stream gets bigger and bigger they've tried to put an emphasis on the trans people being given voices.
I think a larger problem is that culturally, people aren't going to be talking about them afterwards. With all due respect to the people in this thread, it's sort of similarly happening here already. People are talking about Graham Lineham, because people like dunking on and slamming a guy. People are talking about Hbomberguy, because he organized the thing. People are talking about AOC and Chuck Tingle and Donkey Kong because they were celebrity guests on the thing. And that's a larger cultural problem that it takes time to push against, in some kind of messy ways.
One thing I'd like to recommend to people is to not get too focused on the idea of getting a sick dunk on people. It's been a frustrating day for a lot of people I know because other people are rushing to reply and quote tweet to hateful garbage to totally own them, and it's important to remember that if you do that you're still letting other people see that hateful garbage. A lot of times seeing that does not outweigh the knowledge that people disagree.
This is, overall, a good thing that happened. But it's also important to consider that this probably could not have reached the zeitgeist that it did if say, a trans person was doing it (Quite frankly, we've seen trans people on this very forum do fundraising that has not been as zeitgeisty at all). I encourage people to walk away from this remembering the importance of giving a platform to people who have a harder time getting a platform than you do, and the importance of remembering not just that AOC showed up, but all the people who aren't minor celebrities, because culturally they can't be. It will be a long time before the world gets to a place where charities like Mermaids aren't necessary. Remembering the value of platforming minorities and deplatforming those who would harm them is how we get to that world.
This is the best take I've read so far. Especially that third paragraph. I wish I could burn "BEING RIGHT =/= DOING RIGHT" into the surface of the moon. And also stamp it on my younger self's forehead in mirror writing while I'm at it.

Beaver Bother is a real punch in the gut minigame.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
i only had time to tune in at the end and donate while people were doing their thank yous and signing off, probbbably gonna wait for a youtube supercut to come out before i watch more
The amount of time people on Twitter generally spend yelling at bad tweets is genuinely baffling to me. Watch Netflix or something, Jesus.
It's like how, on The Network of Sites Formerly Known As Gawker, a person's comments on the articles are virtually invisible until they've proven themselves not to be a shithead. Conceptually it's a decent system, but it's constantly undermined by top commenters screenshotting troll posts just so they can publicly yell at them.
Or the dog piles that used to happen here a lot more often. Sure, this one person has been told forty-seven times in this thread that cold weather doesn't disprove global warming - but they haven't heard it from me yet!

Executed correctly, there is value in showing bad people that the drippings from their rotted souls will not go without opposition. To remind people that we exist and won’t cede ground to them.
It's unsettling. It's like you're slipping through the cracks between the posts.
This kind of direct roleplaying is also a form of communication I haven't seen since chat rooms in the late 90s, so it's twisting my brain from a couple of directions.
It makes me very, very happy to see that Kate Beaton has not just tweeted out the stream, but months ago called out Linehan explicitly and thoughtfully, describing his rhetoric pretty accurately
If you thought Linehan can stoop no lower, nope. He replied to tweets which thank Kate for speaking up etc as though they were directed at him. What a smug, pitiful troll
I'm pretty behind on charities, beyond Mermaids and The Trevor Project
what I usually see are individual trans folk (usually women, usually disabled) needing financial help for gender affirming surgeries or just making rent for another month - as someone who has been financially assisted by forumers several times, I can personally attest to how meaningful that sort of help is
there's not really a place on the forums to share that type of stuff, but for anyone on twitter just keep an eye out and RT what you can (there's so many cries for help that it can easily get overwhelming)
Miss me? Find me on:
Twitch (I stream most days of the week) Twitter (mean leftist discourse)
I could sort of get it to work my phone, but I don't know how to watch it on my TV
And what's a discord?
Discord is a program that lets you create chat servers
Kind of like the modern version of IRC channels, with features like voice chat and the like
I don't know what IRC was either, I am sorry
Basically discord is just a program where you set up a server that you can divide up into both text and voice chatrooms, then invite other people to them. They can be private or public
It's also the platform where neo-nazis go to plan shit these days. Infiltrating their discord channels has been a source of like a solid 50% of the information Bellingcat has gathered. Don't know if it's because of a platform specific policy or if it's because it's the platform gamers are using now.

I think a good question for cis folk to ask themselves right now is how they can also provide material support for the trans community
it's probably not gonna be 300+k dollars, but even small things are worth doing, ya know?
also the trans military ban went into effect, today, and that's the sort of thing to precede some truly awful attacks against the rights of trans folx
we need the help
A friend of mine recently set up a Go Fund Me to help with her transition and I used the site for the first time ever. I only have so much money and that sucks because she deserves more.

I'm pretty sure it's just that it's easy to use and people are under the mistaken impression that it's private.
Happiness is within reach!
