No other franchise gets the weird special treatment Smash got, where a nearly 20 year old game gets a spot alongside its newest game. Sucks for Melee as a community, but it was becoming an untenable situation for EVO from several angles.

It's debatable, but EVO had some iteration of Street Fighter II (originally released in 1991) every year up until 2011. So that's the original 'Battle by the Bay' tournament in 1996, & every year from 2000-2010, alongside successive versions of:
    • Alpha (A2 in 1996, A2 & A3 in 2000, & A3 in 2001)
    • III (2000, 2003-2009)
    • IV (2009-2015)
But that depends on whether you count the different iterations as being updates to the same game or true sequels (for example, the last two years used Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix). For those not familiar with SF2's evolution:
    1. (1991) Street Fighter II: The World Warrior - the original arcade game on Capcom's CPS1 cabinet hardware, later ported to the SNES. 8 playable characters (Ryu, Ken, Guile, Chun Li, Zangief, Dhalsim, E. Honda, Blanka) and 4 non-playable boss characters (Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison). Interesting trivia, in Japan, the criminal boxer was named Mike Bison, the masked assassin was named Balrog, and the psychic warlord was named Vega, but for the international releases they swapped the names to avoid being sued by Mike Tyson. In international pro fighting they are sometimes referred to as Boxer, Claw, and Dictator for clarity.
    2. (1992) Street Fighter II Championship Edition - an update of the arcade game which made the bosses playable, made mirror matches (two players picking the same character) possible for the first time, had some minor tweaks to characters, added palette swaps to each character's costume (for mirror matches), and was ported to the Sega Genesis
    3. (1992) Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting Edition - originally an upgrade kit for CE cabinets, this increased the speed of the game, added some new moves to some characters, and made further balance changes, also changed up the palette options for characters and was ported to the SNES
    4. (1993) Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers - the first version on the new CPS2 hardware allowing a minor graphics & sound update, this version added four new playable characters (Cammy, Fei Long, Dee Jay, and Thunderhawk), their stages, changed palettes up again, and made various balance changes. It was ported to the SNES.
    5. (1994) Super Street Fighter II Turbo - yet another facelift, with new announcer (and some character voices), sound and music, also replaced the original intro sequence, changed the animations for some moves, added new victory animations, new portraits and HUD. Added the ability to select the game speed for the first time in an arcade installment (though operators could lock it to a speed instead of letting players choose). Added super combos and the super meter for the first time. Lastly, it introduced the hidden final boss fight with new character Akuma. This was originally ported to the 3DO.
    6. (2003) Hyper Street Fighter II - originally designed for home consoles (initially the Sony Playstation 2), this installment was basically a port of SSF2T with the ability to play as different versions of each fighter (based on their previous SF2 movesets). A limited run of CPS2 units was also produced for arcades. I think this was the first version with a playable Akuma.
    7. (2008) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix - a real labor of love, this HD facelift of SSF2T to port it to more modern platforms had significant balance changes put together by a North American team led by David Sirlin (a game designer focused on balanced competitive games who first made a name for himself in SF tournaments). New sprites were drawn by Udon Comics (who have made a long-running licensed Street Fighter comicbook series) and modern versions of the music were provided by the OCRemix community. Added a new and improved training mode, and support for online gameplay. Also has the ability to switch back to classic graphics and sound.
    8. (2017) Ultra Street Fighter II - Originally developed for the Nintendo Switch, this is ostensibly a new update of SSF2T, but it's basically HD Remix with new modes, evil alternate versions of 2 characters (Evil Ryu, Violent Ken), a more powerful version of Akuma (Shin Akuma), a bunch of new game modes mostly derived from other Street Fighters (such as Alpha's two player co-op mode), a new gameplay mechanic (grapple breaks), yet more balance changes, the ability to create custom palette swaps for any character (!), the ability to play using the Japanese voice-acting from Street Fighter IV, new music remixes, an art gallery with over 1400 illustrations from an art book put out back on the 20th anniversary, and a first person fighting game with RPG mechanics where you play as Ryu.

Still, the point stands. For all the differences between SF2, SFA, SF3, SF4, and SF5 (@EVO from 2016 onward), and despite continued community interest in older Street Fighters, EVO stopped hosting older entries in 2011. I think it's perfectly reasonable to do the same with the Smash Bros series by retiring Melee.

The controller thing absolutely does not matter unless you are one of the top 20 best players.

And Melee remains a unique fighting game. It would be interesting to see other high budget brawlers with that kind of movement tech.

Very few characters in this game scare me as much as fighting Isabelle as K. Rool. She can turn my crown traitor pretty much effortlessly, and she loves to disrespect the cannon as well.

I know Villager can do the same thing, but somehow Isabelle scares me more.

  • DaebunzDaebunz Registered User regular
I don't think it's a very good matchup and you really just can't rely on crown much

slingshot is probably the bigger issue

Slingshot is bad, yes. Fishing pole is also bad, because my usual "thing" is to recover to a ledge snap with the kopter, and she can just dangle the rod to grab.

I was lobbying with a friend and discovered I'm apparently a god at instinct rests? Like, if I had any conscious thought in my head about pressing down and b it was guaranteed to miss by a mile, but sometimes my fingers were just like "yes. now." I hit three out of four like that!

All of them were at like 20% so they survived and got a free smash in, but it's mostly the tilt factor it's useful for.

my dog chewed through my GC adapter :(

and apparently nintendo doesn't really make them anymore?! they're like seventy fucking dollars on amazon

there's lots of cheaper third party ones, does anyone know if there are brands i need to avoid?

  • StericaSterica Yes Registered User, Moderator mod
For whatever reason, Nintendo does one run of them and shoots the person responsible for designing them.

Best Buy has a knockoff version for $15

I don't know the details on exactly which brand, but there have been reports of a third-party gamecube adapter that doesn't connect well with the latest run of official GameCube controllers for Ultimate. It can basically get stuck in the port, and if you try to force it out, it can potentially rip out the connections. I had seen a picture of this on twitter, but we also had issues with them locally.

When searching reddit, the only similar info I could find was for an "Old Skool" brand of adapter, which apparently doesn't even work on the Switch despite claiming that it does.

2 different thoughts from playing online today.

    * Wolf is an extremely opporessive opponent for K. Rool, if he gets in and starts doing big claw combos and hopping all over.
    * It's still very hilarious when people fall for the cannon suck like 5 times in a row. It feels like people get impatient and sloppy when they want to make you just stop shooting.

I'm discovering that Ganondorf has utterly broken how I expect slow characters to deal damage

Incineroar barely does anything unless you have Revenge going. And Incineror probably hits pretty hard!

Incidentally, I'm also discovering that Nairo drove the entire playerbase into Ganondorf's arms, because about 25% of the people I fought today (in non-Elite matches, because of Incineroar) were all rolling the evil wizard man! And that's great, more people should play Ganondorf because he's the best, but yowza it's so many. I ran into two Clouds and around half a dozen Ganondorfs.

Also fighting Ganondorf as Incineroar is the Smash equivalent of playing Heaven or Hell. You think you have a big lead on the big man? You do not. God. You do not ever.

A little! It's pretty fun! Branching out is fun, but also so is the character

A bit too dependent on Revenge for my taste, but I like it! Incineroar has some real moxie. All the taunting is exactly what it needs but makes some moves unsafe on hit, which I'm not used to

i dont think the taunting has anything to do with the move itself and recovery frames

you can cancel out of the taunts with literally anything once the recovery of the move in question is finished

incineroar just has buttons you shouldn't throw out unless you're really committed

Incineroar has a lot of buttons you shouldn't throw out unless you're really committed. Fighting the damn thing I always assumed that Ftilt was pretty safe since it comes out so fast but Incineroar's such a ham with how long it holds that pose

This character may suffer more than any other I've played from the variability of input lag that's introduced in online play. I just want to do sick Revenge clotheslines! I've lost a game or two because I bonked faces with someone when I should have obliterated them
