I guess I could always sell my Pro for money for a PS5, but that sounds like so much work

I'm with Abby, I have no real interest or readiness for a PS5 right now.

I mean, the implied backwards compatibility helps, and it's good my crappy PSVR will still work with it, but eh.

I still need to get a 4K TV first :|

As someone who didn’t get a mid gen upgrade, I am all the way onboard for PS5. Sooner the better.

I didn’t get one either but I’ve been thinking about a Pro for a while. Not anymore of course. It still feels weird to me, especially because the right now the PS5 just sounds like an even beefier PS4.

Plus I’m old and not an early adopter. A lot harder to justify the $400 price tag before something has been tested by the market.

Speaking of things that start with P and end in 5, Persona 5 Royal is coming next year. Essentially the golden version of Persona 5, new teammate, new location, added a third semester, stuff like that. I’ll be interested to see if I can upgrade my current version or if they only sell it as a separate game.

Sounds like they’re selling it separately because they’re adding a ton and reworking the story and updating to 4K. Which is less cool than selling an upgrade pack but not enough to keep me from double dipping. Out in October in Japan and 2020 in the west. Also looks like
Morgana's going to have a human form

I don't know if Alex has mentioned it recently but I finally got Frostpunk since it's 50% off right now. Holy shit that's a good game. I managed to actually beat the main scenario campaign on my second try which I'm weirdly proud of lol, looks like they patched in 3 more scenarios over the past year though.

    Highly recommend! (super depressing though)

I've thought about it before but it's very possible Jeff's "bat vs. knife" reference was lost on a lot of fans because they weren't around for that, which is not a criticism it just makes me feel old.

The “bat vs knife” featured in the recent 10 year retrospective podcast, I think, so younger listeners should still be familiar

Yeah I considered that and maybe I’m overthinking things, but I wonder if it has the same impact without the context. Knife vs bat has become this kind of apocryphal lore that I don’t know whether it has the same impact listening to it on a retrospective as opposed to its first, spur of the moment airing.

Again this isn’t me trying to be elitist about fandom, I’m all for GB being a huge ass important thing in video games, I just wonder about how these kinds of mini cultural things “hit” when observed at different times. Also, again, makes me feel fuckin old.
I actually wonder how their demographics are. You'd figure the younger crowd would be more into YouTube personalities.

I’d guess it runs the gamut. I remember someone wrote in talking about the GameCube being their first console when they were 5 or something and I died a little inside.

I recall that I wasn't a big fan of Ryan and Jeff when the podcast first started because they were far more console orientated. That's what drew me to Vinny and Brad initially (and the occasional pods that Drew was on.)

Re: Bat vs Knife, it's certainly best hearing it for the first time, either on initial broadcast or coming to it now without context. That is, it still hold up, but loses something on repeated listening.

Not sure if I'd be interested in having the new crew discuss, or if it's best left as one time memory.

I haven't listened yet (I'm behind on my Beastcasts) but I'll prob skip ahead to listen to this one just like I listened to the one with Jeff Gerstmann pre-PAX today.

*Shocking* that Austin and Dan is a good podcast combo and that he makes Dan better by proxy.

I also disagree with him a lot on stuff I enjoy about systems like that, but it's weird. I also acknowledge that I would enjoy these games a lot more if I did share his viewpoint. By the end of these games i'm generally full of potions and scrolls and whatever other random crap there is. I don't need them, I never needed them, I never sold them, and I wouldn't have needed the gold from them if I did because I barely bought anything.

But here I am hoarding away and getting annoyed when my bags fill up and I have to toss one of these things i'll never use.

  • GlalGlal AiredaleRegistered User regular
Yeah, I think the main problem is that so many games' design has trained us to hoard, even when it's not beneficial. Usually because there are systems upon systems that make it more difficult to tell when something will be useful, or make it very punishing to not have the right item at the right time.

The experience he described in his DnD game has almost nothing to do with encumbrance mechanics in video games. One involves a collective group decision and the other is micromanaging useless crap in order to focus on the good stuff.

Austin is awesome. He has unique perspectives on a lot of things. But I could feel myself making faces when he said he loved encumbrance.

I think the idea of encumbrance in games is that you’re thinking about what you’re picking up, not just maniacally grabbing everything not nailed down. Some games do it better than others.

To what end? That’s not be trying to be condescending or something, it’s a genuine question.

From my perspective, Skyrim and it’s ilk are the biggest examples of this illusion of freedom, and pretty much all of it is useless. Fallout 4 makes it useful insofar as you’re dumping junk into a junk conversion machine, but I feel it would behoove those games to focus more on quality of loot rather than quantity.

    So I can have it.

And yeah I have never made it out of the opening town in a Bethesda game. Totally not for me.

Even in Fallout 1 I had a spot in the desert with every extra item I had collected, lined up in rows. I spent so long making trips in and out of the final super dungeon area to dump loot that I got some sort of time based bad ending and had to load an earlier file to actually go beat the game.

I actually blame FF6 for this. It was my first rpg and for all its brilliance items are almost entirely superfluous in it.

Weirdly enough, Dishonored changed this for me. I played it at a higher difficulty and refused to reload a save unless I died so I had to live with accidentally killing people, taking bad falls, using items, not ghosting a level or whatever. Taking a no kill run into a fuck it it's grenade time whoop whoop whoop TELEPORT god am I safe run and then living with it was fun.

Now I play all games like that, I drink potions or dump things that aren't worth it and I might still pick up everything but I sell it and buy things I will and do use, I live by the seat of my pants and YEAHHHH!!!! It was actually quite freeing in a video game sense.

Austin creates narratives around mechanics in games, whether they are presented in the game system or not. Not everyone is going to do that so *shrug*
