I also love the way that Austin does collaborative worldbuilding in his tabletop games. It's legitimately incredible.
But it also is a thing I cannot do because i'm not that creative off the top of my head on demand. I need a lot of prep time.
I run heavily improvisational TTRPGs but I still think Austin's love of FO4 is a bunch of goddamn nonsense.
(I'm exaggerating obviously. Austin is a hell of a dude and I have nothing but respect for him. But I have no ability to treat videogame mechanics the way he does nor do I find it at all compelling beyond his ability to tell a good story.)
Weirdly enough, Dishonored changed this for me. I played it at a higher difficulty and refused to reload a save unless I died so I had to live with accidentally killing people, taking bad falls, using items, not ghosting a level or whatever. Taking a no kill run into a fuck it it's grenade time whoop whoop whoop TELEPORT god am I safe run and then living with it was fun.
Now I play all games like that, I drink potions or dump things that aren't worth it and I might still pick up everything but I sell it and buy things I will and do use, I live by the seat of my pants and YEAHHHH!!!! It was actually quite freeing in a video game sense.
Yup. My last Dishonored Playthru was just full chaos oh yeah. I mean, why give me all these awesome toys that I get punished for? It's why I resented MGS4 and 5 too...all these awesome guns to use but noooo, don't use 'em ever.
As someone who has been told (not by any real medical professionals, so grain of salt) that I might have a borderline IRL hoarding disorder, I fully understand the "But I might need it later" mentality that is drilled into us via video games at an early age.
Like, I get what Austin was trying to say, but he loves the tension and struggle that some games can give him: IIRC, it's why he loved Invisible Inc, a game where you basically CAN'T clear the board of enemies before you exit the level, which is how I would play those types of games.
But also he's one of those lovable weirdos who turns every game into a narrative that is or is not intended by the developers. The way Vinny has a supernatural ability to break open world games, Austin has a supernatural ability for cool shit to happen to him, or at least convey the stuff that happened to him on Twitter in a cool way/way that makes me think a game is way cooler than it actually is.
Like whenever people play Crusader Kings 2 or Dwarf Fortress and have these crazy stories about stuff that happened, but it's all conveyed via context clues or a lot of reading.
Hearing Austin breakdown all the things he loves about open world games is him just listing everything I hate like encumbrance
The experience he described in his DnD game has almost nothing to do with encumbrance mechanics in video games. One involves a collective group decision and the other is micromanaging useless crap in order to focus on the good stuff.
Austin is awesome. He has unique perspectives on a lot of things. But I could feel myself making faces when he said he loved encumbrance.
I think the idea of encumbrance in games is that you’re thinking about what you’re picking up, not just maniacally grabbing everything not nailed down. Some games do it better than others.
Most games’ inventory systems are too shitty to make this meaningful. It’s just a chore 90% of the time.

LOL...I was gonna say Abby you're wrong...and then realized that out of the 25 characters...4 are soldiers. Throw in Johnny and maybe Kano and Kabal and almost 25% of the characters are soldiers for Abby so...she's not that wrong lol.

I mean it's a competition to see whose world gets to survive. Yeah, the best fighters from Earth are probably people whose job it is to fight.
Kansas called and wants to slap its prodigal son upside the head.
To be fair, Alex had no clue either.
We should applaud Dan for his willingness to ask questions.
Maybe it's my own prejudicial rural upbringing showing, but I judge people from farm country a bit more harshly on this sort of thing. I don't expect city kids to know about wheat, but if you come from Kansas you should know your grains, dammit!
I am now considering doing something like Vinny did and looking at all cutscene videos of the storylines for 9 and X . . . but I think that I might just dive in and then go back if I have to.
I think the last actual storymode of any Mortal Kombat game I played through was Deadly Alliance.

Despite owning both games. I totally did this. Was rather glad when I remembered how much bullshit that Shao Kahn fight was.
Based on where I grew up I should be able to fish and/or pilot a ferry
I'm not going to hold anybody to their roots
Based on my experience, I would have assumed elementary level education would have social studies covering local history, economy, and culture. My experience included foreign culture studies as well. Perhaps that is a difference borne out of growing up in Maryland rather than Dan in Kansas a decade later.
Black lives matter.

Oh man, this Sea of Thieves Playdate is wonderful. They spend a lot of the episode lost at sea in a little row-boat.
The GTA V feature is supposed to be starting soon, looking forward to more hijinx. Must have been hard to edit together, since they apparently started recording it last October.

Yeah so, I ended up watching all of that awesome nonsense and am very excited about where the MK11 story is going so far (I'm about 6 chapters in)!
And legit emotional beats in an MK story is something I totally didn't expect. But it all works so well!

I too recently watched all of 9/10/11 story scenes (like 8 or 9 hours worth!) and was surprised at the relative cohesion/sophistication of the plot. Though i must admit i found my preference might be 10 > 9 > 11.

9 has some of the weakest and dumbest justifications for setting up a fight
X and 11 are far more seamless about their overall presentation and character work
Why all the exclamation points?! I am in the pocket of BIG EXCLAMATION! but their checks haven't cleared yet! Please sign up for Premium so I remain gainfully employed or I might have to see what BIG EMOJI is paying!
Well, it sounds like a reorg, like they're not going to be Waypoint anymore.

VICE seem to operate under a maxim of always be rebranding/pivoting so I suppose this is the best outcome given that a very real other option was shuttering.
